• Physically diverse and dedicated!
• No lit equipment between you and 3rd party!
• More secure (really)!
Cons!
• Resources to setup (Deploying techs, Remote hands, optics, cables)!
• Time to setup (Waiting for days, NRCs, expedite fee)!
• Consumes physical port on your and 3rd party devices (routers/switches/panels) regardless
of importance of use-case!
• High density port consumption leads to more devices, leads to more racks/power/space!
• Very Expensive - Monthly MRCs, NRCs!
• Requires turn ups, testing!
• Troubleshooting….!
• Long term commitment (for transport)

The “SDN” Alternative
• Natural progression…. Moving “up the stack” with virtualization !
• Lots of SDN hype…. This is SDN realized in the public market!
• The Meet-Me-Room itself is virtualized (Think 111 8th Ave, 1 Wilshire virtualized)!
• Abstraction layer similar to cloud compute!
• Decouple the Colo provider and the interconnection provider…. Better neutrality.. !
• Should you really use a fabric provided via the colo provider though? !
• Ability to easily move!
!
• But….Will it work?!
• PacketExchange tried something similar in the past, technology wasn't ready (Global
L2 Domain)!
• Newer hardware can provide proper scale, segmentation, QoS, SLAs (if built properly)!
• Compute virtualization is now commoditized, nobody is arguing over it anymore.. Same
will happen here.!
• Start small, just like you did with virtualization….

• Size VXCs as needed (10Mbps, 5Gbps, 10Gbps…)!
• Analytics, Flow data, “Big Data”!
Cons!
• Middle man between you and 3rd party!
• Security?!
• Multi-tenant platform!
• Multiple providers/networks on same platform!
• Plus all other general cons associated to Public Cloud :)

Cons! • Resources to setup (Deploying techs, Remote hands, optics, cables)! • Time to setup (Waiting for days, NRCs, expedite fee)! • Consumes physical port on your and 3rd party devices (routers/switches/panels) regardless of importance of use-case! • High density port consumption leads to more devices, leads to more racks/power/space! • Very Expensive - Monthly MRCs, NRCs! • Requires turn ups, testing! • Troubleshooting….! • Long term commitment (for transport)

Better neutrality.. ! • Should you really use a fabric provided via the colo provider though? ! • Ability to easily move! ! • But….Will it work?! • PacketExchange tried something similar in the past, technology wasn't ready (Global L2 Domain)! • Newer hardware can provide proper scale, segmentation, QoS, SLAs (if built properly)! • Compute virtualization is now commoditized, nobody is arguing over it anymore.. Same will happen here.! • Start small, just like you did with virtualization….
