1 Samuel 17:31-54
Delivered
1 Samuel 17:31-54 ESV
31 When the words that David spoke were heard, they repeated them before
Saul, and he sent for him.

4. 32 And David said to Saul, “Let no man's heart fail because of him. Your servant
will go and fight with this Philistine.”

33 And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight
with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth.”
http://bibleencyclopedia.com/picturesjpeg/Goliath_1080-224.jpg
34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And
when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock,

5. 35 I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he
arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him.

36 Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised
Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living
God.”

37 And David said, “The Lord Who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from
the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said
to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”

6. 38 Then Saul clothed David with his armor. He put a helmet of bronze on his head
and clothed him with a coat of mail,

39 and David strapped his sword over his armor. And he tried in vain to go, for he
had not tested them. Then David said to Saul, “I cannot go with these, for I have
not tested them.” So David put them off.

40 Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook
and put them in his shepherd's pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he
approached the Philistine.

41 And the Philistine moved forward and came near to David, with his shield-
bearer in front of him. 42 And when the Philistine looked and saw David, he
disdained him, for he was but a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance.
7. 43 And the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with
sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

44 The Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds
of the air and to the beasts of the field.”

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a
spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the
God of the armies of Israel, Whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will
deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I
will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the
air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a
God in Israel, 47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with
sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord's, and He will give you into our hand.”
8. 48 When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran
quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DrG0Mr8pWKc/T60wD9CWbtI/AAAAAAAAAHY/qdn95_oQe5w/s1600/Imagem1.png
49 And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck
the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his
face to the ground.

50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck
the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David.

9. 51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out
of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw
that their champion was dead, they fled.
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yIby1ziSvec/UiVaQybXzCI/AAAAAAAAEk4/CzVuGHFcAWo/s1600/David+and+Goliath.jpg
52 And the men of Israel and Judah rose with a shout and pursued the Philistines
as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron, so that the wounded Philistines fell on the
way from Shaaraim as far as Gath and Ekron.

53 And the people of Israel came back from chasing the Philistines, and they
plundered their camp. 54 And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it
to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.
10. … that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel,

An important point in this story is that Goliath was taunting the sovereign Lord of
the universe.
He was challenging God's people to stand up to him and demonstrate that their
God was more powerful than he was.
http://ginaduke.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/tauntings2.jpg.jpg
11. Christ (the Word) was taunted.

Until David came into the Israelite camp, there was no one who was willing to
step out in faith and face the giant.
http://tse3.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.M2296edf9fe6b4af7b6402d0b1417134ao0&pid=15.1
However, David's faith was so strong that he was willing to believe that the Lord
would go with him and enable him to defeat Goliath.
David’s faith was born out of his experience of God’s grace and mercy in his life
up to that point.
12. The Lord had delivered him out of dangerous situations in the past, proving His
power and trustworthiness, and David relied on Him to deliver him from the
Philistine.
http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-QcucXSLc5kk/T6iYJVLZXcI/AAAAAAAAFGc/l1dV4o8zwvQ/s1600/davi-golias2.jpg
From the story of David and Goliath, we can learn that the God we serve is
capable of defeating any of the giants in our lives—fear, depression, financial
issues, doubts of faith—if we know Him and His nature well enough to step out in
faith.

sSvAQUJvGDQ/VUEtX0OBYmI/AAAAAAAACts/fo3hjpK_DTs/s1600/tumblr_nnkzmvwQIP1rhr6kfo1_540.jpg
When we do not know what the future holds, we have to trust Him.
But we can’t trust someone we don’t know, so knowing God through His Word
will build our faith in Him.
13. In 2007, one out of seven students that began coming to the Barnes Street
Ministry had even heard of David and Goliath.

Our battles with the giants in our lives will result in victory if we trust in the God we
have gotten to know through His Word, act in faith based on His promises in His
Word and cling by faith to God and His power.
When we are tested by trials, we can, in the power of the Lord, stand up against
any giant, trusting our Savior to win the victory.
The Plan of Hope & Salvation
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes
in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
John 14:6 ESV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to
the Father except through me.”
14. Romans 3:23 ESV
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23a ESV
23a For the wages of sin is death,
Death in this life (the first death) is 100%.
Even Jesus, the one who doesn’t deserve death, died in this life to pay the
penalty for our sins.
The death referred to in Romans 6:23a is the second death explained in
Revelation 21:8.
Revelation 21:8 ESV
8 “But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the
sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the
lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
Romans 6:23b ESV
23b but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 5:8 ESV
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for
us.
Revelation 21:7 ESV
7 "The one who conquers will have this heritage, and I will be his God and he will
be my son.”
Romans 10:9-10 explains to us how to be conquerors.
Romans 10:9-10 ESV
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your
heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart
one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Romans 10:13 ESV
13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
