Theory- Audience
Samuel Johnson
Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
This film appeals the older demographic, between 21-
50 year olds. However this film appeals more to the
female gender, as its main story revolves around a
couple (not an ordinary couple). The gratification from
watching this film is spine tingling sexual tension, as
the couple frequently have rough sexually intercourse.
• Secondary Audience
The secondary audience are teenagers, between 13-
17 year olds. This audience is mixed between both
male and female genders and because of the
film/books infamous story, it intrigues younger
audiences to watch it out of human interest.
Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
This film appeals to the younger demographic, between 8-17 year
olds. However this film appeals more to the male gender, as its
main story is full of action packed sci-fi thrills, including countless
acts of violence and death (of the PG verity). The gratification
from watching this film is enjoyment and thrill, as when the film
came out in the 1970s it resonated with those waiting so long for
a film of this quality, based around sci-fi to come out.
• Secondary Audience
The secondary audience for this film are adults, ranging
between 28-60 year olds. This is both due to parents
buying and therefore taking their children to the cinema
and those who reminisce, by watching the new films
whom may have watched the originals when they first
came out in the 70s. This may appeal to males and
females depending on whether they saw the originals and
enjoyed them, when they first came out.
Audience Profile
• Primary Audience
This film appeals to the younger demographic, between 4-13
year olds. This film appeals more to the male gender, as its
main story is full of action packed superhero fights and is
also the first Disney licensed film in association with marvel,
therefore attracting a wider audience who enjoy the marvel
superhero franchise. The gratification from watching this film
is enjoyment and humour, as the film is both comedic in
nature and Is also full of more dramatic action sequences,
therefore is the best of both worlds too keep the audience
entertained and engaged throughout.
• Secondary Audience
The secondary audience for this film is the older
demographic, between 28-55 year olds. Some adults may
find it entertaining due to its hidden references children
wouldn't understand, or just because they genuinely find it
funny. However the case usually involves the parent taking
their child to the cinema, after they have bought the ticket;
enjoy it or not it should keep their child entertained for a
while.
Hypodermic Needle
• Definition
Where an audience instantly takes in and accepts what
they are told by a form of media.
• Example
You may choose to pick a certain newspaper over
another due to political bias, because you want to hear
about particular news articles and immediately believe
it. Whereas another newspaper may report on the
same story, but on other aspects which may contradict
the article in your chosen newspaper.
Uses and Gratifications Information
I find all of my information using the search engine google whether to find
out the definition of a certain word, or to find out about recent news. When
looking for advice on how to structure an answer, I watch tutorials on
YouTube, I prefer watching and listening to reading; I feel like It enables me
to better understand. Furthermore when I find myself at an impasse and
can’t think of a word or remember the name of an actor, I always use google
to find variations of certain words or when looking for an actor I google the
film they were in and scour through the cast members. Finally when I need
to learn something for a particular topic, I ask people around me (that I
know), look through a text book on a certain topic or usually just use
google/YouTube again it’s the simplest most effective way for me to learn,
for example I needed to learn Pythagoras's theorem for my maths test and
therefore watched a short 5minute plus YouTube tutorial and its stuck in my
brain ever since (A2 + B2 = C2) even though I don’t need it anymore.
Uses and Gratifications Personal
Identity
Some people may watch certain forms of media and change their personal
ideologies to that similar of a characters in films or television shows. If you watch a
series long enough the ‘wiring’ in your brain may change for better or for worse
depending on said character personality. Furthermore It may also change your
personal traits, on many occasions even I have found myself picking up traits from
fictional characters, especially if I’ve been watching a series long enough, I may
start to use certain phrases a character may use consistently throughout a series or
film; but never has it influenced my ideologies in anyway, at least from what I can
tell. You may also find yourself identifying with a certain character or person from
the off point of a film, series or YouTube video, you may even prefer it when these
character come around because you feel a certain connection with them, even if
you have never met them in real life. This is why people prefer certain youtubers
over others, because they can easily relate to their personal traits from the start
and therefore aspire to be more like them career wise, because if they can do it
you can do it.
Uses and Gratifications Integration
and Social Interaction
Social media allows for everyone to follow different types of people over
the internet. For some it may be gamers, artists or musicians and for others
comedians, celebrities or footballers. Social media allows for you to be
yourself, with no judgement put on you by others, as it may in the real
world, you can follow and interact with people you like and block those
who you don’t; restricting the possibility of cyber bullying. Furthermore
this may give you a sense of belonging in a group you want to be in, of your
own choosing whereas in an actual environment such as school, making or
finding friends may be a difficult task. Social media may also be a
substitute for real world interaction, finding friends or just general
communication may be a real world struggle for you, whereas over the
internet typing takes the place of speaking therefore you can keep at your
own pace and not be judged by others around you listening in to a private
conversation.
Uses and Gratifications Entertainment
People use all forms of media, whether that be film, television, YouTube etcetera for
entertainment purposes. For some escapism is a huge factor to why they may watch certain
films or series, real life may seem mundane and dull for a lot of people or they may just have
a rough life and therefore love to spend most of their free time, outside the depths of this
reality and in a different one. They may enjoy travelling at impossible speeds across the huge
vacuum of space inside the millennium falcon, or they may like a trip to the legendary world
of Jurassic park or the mythical realm of middle-earth; whatever it may be it gives them a
sense of bliss. Secondly Relaxation is another big factor to why people watch, what they
watch or play what they play. It allows you to forget about current personal or global issues
for a certain span of time and to be entranced in one of these many forms of media. Lets say
you’ve had a bad day at work and you want to release your anger without causing real world
damage and harm, some people may play grand theft auto and go on an endless rampage
around the city, whereas others may listen to calming or even loud music to block out the
constant negative thoughts. Finally other people simply watch films and other forms of
media out of pure enjoyment. For them there’s nothing like sitting down for hours on end
watching a good boxset or collection of films, just for the enjoyment. Maybe a sequel to your
favourite film comes out and you go to the cinema to watch it, for no other reason than to
have a good time and there’s nothing wrong with that, maybe its just one of your favourite
pass times taking in a magnificent drama, laughing hysterically at a good comedy or crying
non-stop at a romance. This is all they get out of it, not to relax, not to escape just to sit back,
enjoy and appreciate for a few hours just to forget about it the next day.
Consumer Generated Content
• Example
YouTube.com
• What are the advantages to media producers?
YouTube creates revenue and publicity off the backs of free labourers, called
YouTubers and without them YouTube would be an empty shell of a company.
• Why would the audience generate content?
Successful YouTubers are self employed through their content on YouTube,
with enough publicity they can make an easy stream of revenue with in video
advertisements and the more they include the more money they get.
However some YouTubers make content because they enjoy it, with the
revenue being an added bonus, although because its publicised how much
some YouTubers can make from their content, people now rarely make videos
because they enjoy doing it.

Theory-Audience

  • 2. Audience Profile • Primary Audience This film appeals the older demographic, between 21- 50 year olds. However this film appeals more to the female gender, as its main story revolves around a couple (not an ordinary couple). The gratification from watching this film is spine tingling sexual tension, as the couple frequently have rough sexually intercourse. • Secondary Audience The secondary audience are teenagers, between 13- 17 year olds. This audience is mixed between both male and female genders and because of the film/books infamous story, it intrigues younger audiences to watch it out of human interest.
  • 3. Audience Profile • Primary Audience This film appeals to the younger demographic, between 8-17 year olds. However this film appeals more to the male gender, as its main story is full of action packed sci-fi thrills, including countless acts of violence and death (of the PG verity). The gratification from watching this film is enjoyment and thrill, as when the film came out in the 1970s it resonated with those waiting so long for a film of this quality, based around sci-fi to come out. • Secondary Audience The secondary audience for this film are adults, ranging between 28-60 year olds. This is both due to parents buying and therefore taking their children to the cinema and those who reminisce, by watching the new films whom may have watched the originals when they first came out in the 70s. This may appeal to males and females depending on whether they saw the originals and enjoyed them, when they first came out.
  • 4. Audience Profile • Primary Audience This film appeals to the younger demographic, between 4-13 year olds. This film appeals more to the male gender, as its main story is full of action packed superhero fights and is also the first Disney licensed film in association with marvel, therefore attracting a wider audience who enjoy the marvel superhero franchise. The gratification from watching this film is enjoyment and humour, as the film is both comedic in nature and Is also full of more dramatic action sequences, therefore is the best of both worlds too keep the audience entertained and engaged throughout. • Secondary Audience The secondary audience for this film is the older demographic, between 28-55 year olds. Some adults may find it entertaining due to its hidden references children wouldn't understand, or just because they genuinely find it funny. However the case usually involves the parent taking their child to the cinema, after they have bought the ticket; enjoy it or not it should keep their child entertained for a while.
  • 5. Hypodermic Needle • Definition Where an audience instantly takes in and accepts what they are told by a form of media. • Example You may choose to pick a certain newspaper over another due to political bias, because you want to hear about particular news articles and immediately believe it. • 6. Uses and Gratifications Information I find all of my information using the search engine google whether to find out the definition of a certain word, or to find out about recent news. When looking for advice on how to structure an answer, I watch tutorials on YouTube, I prefer watching and listening to reading; I feel like It enables me to better understand. Furthermore when I find myself at an impasse and can’t think of a word or remember the name of an actor, I always use google to find variations of certain words or when looking for an actor I google the film they were in and scour through the cast members. Finally when I need to learn something for a particular topic, I ask people around me (that I know), look through a text book on a certain topic or usually just use google/YouTube again it’s the simplest most effective way for me to learn, for example I needed to learn Pythagoras's theorem for my maths test and therefore watched a short 5minute plus YouTube tutorial and its stuck in my brain ever since (A2 + B2 = C2) even though I don’t need it anymore.
  • 7. Uses and Gratifications Personal Identity Some people may watch certain forms of media and change their personal ideologies to that similar of a characters in films or television shows. If you watch a series long enough the ‘wiring’ in your brain may change for better or for worse depending on said character personality. Furthermore It may also change your personal traits, on many occasions even I have found myself picking up traits from fictional characters, especially if I’ve been watching a series long enough, I may start to use certain phrases a character may use consistently throughout a series or film; but never has it influenced my ideologies in anyway, at least from what I can tell. You may also find yourself identifying with a certain character or person from the off point of a film, series or YouTube video, you may even prefer it when these character come around because you feel a certain connection with them, even if you have never met them in real life. This is why people prefer certain youtubers over others, because they can easily relate to their personal traits from the start and therefore aspire to be more like them career wise, because if they can do it you can do it.
  • 8. Uses and Gratifications Integration and Social Interaction Social media allows for everyone to follow different types of people over the internet. For some it may be gamers, artists or musicians and for others comedians, celebrities or footballers. Social media allows for you to be yourself, with no judgement put on you by others, as it may in the real world, you can follow and interact with people you like and block those who you don’t; restricting the possibility of cyber bullying. Furthermore this may give you a sense of belonging in a group you want to be in, of your own choosing whereas in an actual environment such as school, making or finding friends may be a difficult task. Social media may also be a substitute for real world interaction, finding friends or just general communication may be a real world struggle for you, whereas over the internet typing takes the place of speaking therefore you can keep at your own pace and not be judged by others around you listening in to a private conversation.
  • 9. Uses and Gratifications Entertainment People use all forms of media, whether that be film, television, YouTube etcetera for entertainment purposes. For some escapism is a huge factor to why they may watch certain films or series, real life may seem mundane and dull for a lot of people or they may just have a rough life and therefore love to spend most of their free time, outside the depths of this reality and in a different one. They may enjoy travelling at impossible speeds across the huge vacuum of space inside the millennium falcon, or they may like a trip to the legendary world of Jurassic park or the mythical realm of middle-earth; whatever it may be it gives them a sense of bliss. Secondly Relaxation is another big factor to why people watch, what they watch or play what they play. It allows you to forget about current personal or global issues for a certain span of time and to be entranced in one of these many forms of media. Lets say you’ve had a bad day at work and you want to release your anger without causing real world damage and harm, some people may play grand theft auto and go on an endless rampage around the city, whereas others may listen to calming or even loud music to block out the constant negative thoughts. Finally other people simply watch films and other forms of media out of pure enjoyment. For them there’s nothing like sitting down for hours on end watching a good boxset or collection of films, just for the enjoyment. Maybe a sequel to your favourite film comes out and you go to the cinema to watch it, for no other reason than to have a good time and there’s nothing wrong with that, maybe its just one of your favourite pass times taking in a magnificent drama, laughing hysterically at a good comedy or crying non-stop at a romance. This is all they get out of it, not to relax, not to escape just to sit back, enjoy and appreciate for a few hours just to forget about it the next day.
  • 10. Consumer Generated Content • Example YouTube.com • What are the advantages to media producers? YouTube creates revenue and publicity off the backs of free labourers, called YouTubers and without them YouTube would be an empty shell of a company. • Why would the audience generate content? Successful YouTubers are self employed through their content on YouTube, with enough publicity they can make an easy stream of revenue with in video advertisements and the more they include the more money they get. However some YouTubers make content because they enjoy it, with the revenue being an added bonus, although because its publicised how much some YouTubers can make from their content, people now rarely make videos because they enjoy doing it.
