WelcomeIntrosWe have 4 sessions with you so that we can introduce you to the Library, our resources, services and facilities and importantly how to use them.These sessions will involve some group work.
First session will be an introduction to the Library and get you thinking about our range of resources, services and facilities that we provide:Who are we?What we do?What we have?And why?Differentiating between resources and their usesSelecting an appropriate range of resourcesAwareness of how to access resourcesUnderstanding the value of resources in an academic contextUnderstanding a reading list ie. identifying different items such as books, book chapters, journal articles etcHow to find books and journals using the Library Catalogue, Locating and accessing material in the library and online, how the library is arranged, locating material in the libraryWhat to do if you can’t find what you want ie. helpdesk and expert advice, requests, ILLs, other libraries, SCONUL
Divide class into groups.Hand out Who are we and what do we do? Each group look at colour images of things that we have in the library. Think about:Would you expect to find these things in a library?Why might they be useful to students?10 minsFeedback
Ask class how much they think we spend on resources every year? 2011/12 £1.1 millionBooks: all subjects, loan periods, core texts. Including e-books. Other material available such as dissertations, DVDs and videos:documentaries and films (for loan)Web 2.0: Blogs, Facebook, Twitter, LR AppComputers and laptops: Bookable and open-access, laptops for loan, IT support. Range of software available of open-access computers and also for download from download server plus software manuals and training vids on Lynda.com. SPSS, Minitab, Nvivo etc and links to software deals.Journals: Many titles available online, can be searched through databases, up-to-date and detailed info. Etc We also have access to conference proceedings online and MDX research/dissertations available through Research Repository. Also newspapers available online, up-to-date infoCamera: Range of equipment for loan incl. laptops, cameras etc Also have examples of latest technology on Ground Floor for you to play with. Digital stills, video and audio cameras.Study space: available throughout library: informal, silent and group study, bookable rooms etcPhotocopier: MFD-printing, photocopying and scanning. online payment or use Pharos machines. Scanners in basement, Gd and 1st floors.Helpdesks: Reception, Helpdesk and Expert Advice desks plus outreach, Web Helpdesk and Ask-a-Librarian, roamers etc. Stationery and other items for sale such as CDs etcLibrarian: Each subject area has its own dedicated librarian who are available for expert advice, 1-1s, provide user education workshops and Library Subject Guides. Also Ask-a-LibrarianHat: Special Collections including pop-up books, fashion collection, samples ie. ideas for presentation, construction, materials etc Plus MODA. Also Lansdown Archive.
