4. The processes that take place in
the interior of the earth causes in the
storage of energy in some portions in the
earth. Earthquakes occur on those
instances when these energy is being
released.

5. The point of origin of the
earthquakes is known as focus and the
point just above the focus on the surface
of the earth is known as epicenter.

6. The energy being released from
the focus propagates as waves. These
cause tremors on the surface of the earth
and cause destructions.

7. The instrument used to measure
the magnitude of the earthquake is
called a seismograph. The intensity of
the earthquake is measured based on the
Richter Scale.

8. The earthquake that occurred on
26th January 2001 at Bhuj in Gujarat
(Richter Scale 7.7) caused a less of
almost 13,000 lives and great
devastation in the surrounding area.

13. This earthquakes is described as
the worst that has happened in the
Indian subcontinent. The severe quake
lasted 85 seconds, but the tremors were
felt for some more minutes.

14. The greatest destructions was
seen on the western side of Kutch and
the Batchua town was completely
destroyed.

15. The collapse of much storied
building in Ahmadabad and Surat led to
the loss of many lives.
