2. What is a pacemaker?
A pacemaker is a small electrical device that runs on a battery and produces low voltage
rhythmic electrical signals that keep the heart beating when the heart's own electrical
signals are deficient. A pacemaker continuously "watches" the electrical system of your heart
and provides the needed electrical signal if your heart does not do so. During periods when
the heart produces its own electrical signal normally, the pacemaker does nothing except to
continue to monitor.
A pacemaker system is made up of three parts:
1.The generator, a smooth, lightweight case containing a tiny computer and a battery
which makes the electrical signals needed to pace the heart;
2.The connector or header, which is the part of the generator where the leads are attached;
and
3.The leads, which are wires covered in soft, flexible plastic that are inserted into the heart
to help the generator watch the heart and carry the generator’s signals to the heart

by one or more wires. Tiny electric charges
that you can’t feel move through the wire
to your heart.
• Pacemakers work only when needed. They
go on when your heartbeat is too slow, too fast
or irregular.

6. Benefits of pacemaker
Neurostimulation involves modulation of the nervous system and electrically
activate neurons in the body. The activation of neural elements in a part of the
nervous system can be effectively facilitated by stimulation. Micro-electrodes are
utilized to interface with excitable tissue in order to either restore recording
experiences to the implant recipient or control an effector organ. Neurostimulation
technology improves the life quality of those who are severely paralyzed or suffering
from profound losses to various sense organs. It serves as the key part of neural
prosthetics for hearing aid, artificial vision, artificial limbs, and brain-machine
interfaces. In the case of neural stimulation, mostly an electrical stimulation is
utilized and charge-balanced biphasic constant current waveforms or capacitively
coupled charge injection approaches are adopted. Alternatively, the transcranial
magnetic stimulation has been proposed as a non-invasive method in which
a magnetic field causes neurostimulation.
