3. How does MRgFUS work ?
• ExAblate uses a combination of high-intensity ultrasound
waves and MRI to non-invasively image the fibroid and
surrounding organs in 3D, treat the fibroid, obtain real-time
feedback about the treated area, and observe what has been
treated.
• The high intensity focused ultrasound energy heats the fibroid
only at the target area, producing safe and controlled
coagulative necrosis without damaging the surrounding
tissue.
• The treatment procedure lasts about 3 hours, and patients
return to regular activities within a few days.

5. Who can be treated by MRgFUS ?
• Fibroids greater than 2cm and smaller than 20cm are
particularly amenable to treatment with the most noticeable
symptomatic relief from bleeding and pressure symptoms.
• A screening MRI is done that gives us information about the
size, location, number, T2 Hyperintensity and Post contrast
enhancement characteristics.
• These help us choose the best modality to treat your patient’s
fibroid.

6. Contraindications for MRgFus :
• MR incompatible implantable medical devices such as pacemakers
and cochlear implants.
• Severe claustrophobia.
• Known intolerance to MR contrast agents.
• Vertical abdominal or high horizontal scars through the mid-line
which would prevent access to the fibroid (low horizontal scars such
as normal Caesarean section scars or scars to either side of the mid-line
such as appendectomy scars are not a contra-indication).
• Such patients can be treated by Uterine Fibroid Embolization.
