A database of global industrial investment decisions
An overview of Indian data
2017
18/01/18 2
In 2016 we started a global database on industrial investment (industry, energy, R&D and logistics
investment projects). It is much too early to study correlations of this data with international statistics, but
we strongly feel that our data will deliver many insights on the global economy.
Our data is in real time, and include the name of companies investing, with many details (from 20 to 40
fields for each operation : location, sector, product, capacity, customers, supliers…) We are including, for
each project, an industry 4.0 score (from 0 to 12) : the database will provide numerous samples of best
practices alongside six criteria – flexibility, digitalization, energy efficiency, social, environmental and
territorial efforts.
The following data are tables related to the Indian industry. It is not a full analysis of the Indian economy,
but an exercise aiming at knowing if our first 18 month of data already show structures in the global
industrial countries, among which India occupy first rank. We do try to capture every aspect of an
investment, but it has to be mentioned that the amount invested is known in 69% of the projects we track,
and number of jobs created only in 30% of the projects.
2
About these data
18/01/18 3
As shown in the three following tables, from january 2016 to july 2017, India is the first country for
industrial investement on all three criteria we are using: number of projects (1 509 projects), amount
invested (448 billion dollars) and jobs created (645 773).
This result is to be taken with all due precautions: we think that maybe investments in China, specially
of medium size, are more difficult to track because of langage (we do not use Chinese yet in our
sources). On the other hand, it’s easier to work with English speaking country. There may be an
advantage to English speaking countries in our rankings.
We think however that the global overview provided by our data is at least plausible: by continents,
investments in Asia represents 44% of worldwide amounts invested, North America 15% and Europe
15%.
Also, this is the beginning of a new time serie. As much as the relative levels of the top countries, the
evolution in time of amounts invested, jobs created and number of projects, for each of these
countries, will be of interest. Also interesting will be the evolution, in each of these countries, of the
weight of the different sectors and products. Finally, the analysis of crossborder investments (Foreign
Direct Investments) adds another level of interest to these data.

List of Indian companies having announced investments abroad, january 2016-july 2017. Number
of projects, jobs created and amounts invested in MUSD. Eg: Cipla group announced two projects, for
1,8% of investment projects abroad by Indian companies ; those investments should create 180 jobs, for 0,9% of all
jobs created ; the amount invested is 108 MUSD, 0,2% of the overall amount invested by Indian companies.

This table show the share of investment from indian
companies in different countries. It shows that the
United States are the first destination fo choice, un
number of projects, for Indian companies, but that those
projects represent only 1,5% of the industrial projects in
the United States. On the other hand, there are only
seven Indian investments in Bangladesh but they
represent 22,6% of Bangladeshi industrial investments
during this period.
In Australia, the Indian investments are very capital-
intensive. The detailed list of investment show that two
of the five Indian investments in Australia during this
period are for coal mines (GVK Power and Adani
Mining).

Share of Indian investment in industrial investment, by
country, january 2016-july 2017. Number of projects,
jobs created and amounts invested in MUSD.
Eg: In Zimbabwe, there have been two investment projects by
Indian companies, representing 11% of industrial projects in
Zimbabwe ; with 400 jobs created (34,6% of jobs created by
industrial investment in Zimbabwe) and 158 MUSD invested
(16,3% of amounts invested in Zimbabwe).

This table shows the distribution of industrial investment by
sectors in India and China. The main differences in structure are
that India is much more invested in energy production and
metallurgy, and much less invested in electronics and slightly less in
chemicals and automotive.
Further analysis on the companies investing in the electronics
sector in China could be useful for FDI promotion purposes
(selecting targets, identifying most important products – see slide
17).
Pharmaceutical industries seem lower than expected for India. It
could mean the sector is slowing in the last 18 months. Our data
do not measure the stock of capital, only variations.
Information services captures only, in our data, R&D activities in
this sector. We do not track services yet, only R&D activities in
servioce sectors. It does explain the very low share of computer
programming and information services in this table.

Since we use different sector levels, we can
analyse any sector with a certain amount of
details. For instance, the table on the right of this
page detail the 3 sectors tied to energy questions,
using a table of « products » and « detailed products »
we have created.
It is very easy, using those fields, to select
instantly 56 solar power projects and to calculate
that they stand for 2,4% of amounts invested in
those energy linked sectors.

Industrial investment in India, by country of origin
The following three tables shows that foreign companies1 accounts for 12% of amounts invested for
industrial investments in India ; 22% of projects and 48% of jobs created. Further analysis could show that
domestic (Indian) companies invest more in energy sectors (more capital-intensive but with less
employment) and less in electronics sector (consistent with second place for China in jobs created, with
projects by Oppo or Gionee).
1. Some projects are joint-ventures (20% for the whole database). Percentages could be precised to include this aspect.

We track investment announcements worldwide. When announced, many investments are only projects, and will
be completed after a lenght of time that will include zoning, land preparation, building and so on. For each
operation we try to include the planned date of production and the beginning of production.
Capacities are also included, in units relevant to each project (units, megawatts, liters…)
We also add, if available, items such as: customers, suppliers, contractors and financers.
If, finally, a project is cancelled we will cancel it in the database.
Projects are living and we try to grasp as many characteristics as we can.

The following page lists all the industrial investment announced in India with an industry 4.0 score of
6 or more (on 12).
We rank every investment project alongside six criteria representing industry 4.0 tendencies : flexibility
(ability to switch from one product, or product caracteristic, to another) ; energy efficiency ; use of digital
technologies, social (efforts for workers), environmental and territorial efforts (efforts for surrounding
territory).
This ranking is based on information available in the newspaper information gathered by our analysts.
A project which is not scored may suffer from a lack of communication rather than bad design or
implementation.

Strategica india report fdi

  • 1. Industries & Strategies A database of global industrial investment decisions An overview of Indian data 2017
  • 2. 18/01/18 2 In 2016 we started a global database on industrial investment (industry, energy, R&D and logistics investment projects). It is much too early to study correlations of this data with international statistics, but we strongly feel that our data will deliver many insights on the global economy. Our data is in real time, and include the name of companies investing, with many details (from 20 to 40 fields for each operation : location, sector, product, capacity, customers, supliers…) We are including, for each project, an industry 4.0 score (from 0 to 12) : the database will provide numerous samples of best practices alongside six criteria – flexibility, digitalization, energy efficiency, social, environmental and territorial efforts. The following data are tables related to the Indian industry. It is not a full analysis of the Indian economy, but an exercise aiming at knowing if our first 18 month of data already show structures in the global industrial countries, among which India occupy first rank. We do try to capture every aspect of an investment, but it has to be mentioned that the amount invested is known in 69% of the projects we track, and number of jobs created only in 30% of the projects. 2 About these data
  • 3. 18/01/18 3 As shown in the three following tables, from january 2016 to july 2017, India is the first country for industrial investement on all three criteria we are using: number of projects (1 509 projects), amount invested (448 billion dollars) and jobs created (645 773). This result is to be taken with all due precautions: we think that maybe investments in China, specially of medium size, are more difficult to track because of langage (we do not use Chinese yet in our sources). On the other hand, it’s easier to work with English speaking country. There may be an advantage to English speaking countries in our rankings. We think however that the global overview provided by our data is at least plausible: by continents, investments in Asia represents 44% of worldwide amounts invested, North America 15% and Europe 15%. Also, this is the beginning of a new time serie. As much as the relative levels of the top countries, the evolution in time of amounts invested, jobs created and number of projects, for each of these countries, will be of interest. Also interesting will be the evolution, in each of these countries, of the weight of the different sectors and products. • 8. 18/01/18 9 This table shows the distribution of industrial investment by sectors in India and China. The main differences in structure are that India is much more invested in energy production and metallurgy, and much less invested in electronics and slightly less in chemicals and automotive. Further analysis on the companies investing in the electronics sector in China could be useful for FDI promotion purposes (selecting targets, identifying most important products – see slide 17). Pharmaceutical industries seem lower than expected for India. It could mean the sector is slowing in the last 18 months. Our data do not measure the stock of capital, only variations. Information services captures only, in our data, R&D activities in this sector. We do not track services yet, only R&D activities in servioce sectors. It does explain the very low share of computer programming and information services in this table. 9 Industrial investment in India and China, a comparison China % India % Diff. • 21. 18/01/18 22 We track investment announcements worldwide. When announced, many investments are only projects, and will be completed after a lenght of time that will include zoning, land preparation, building and so on. For each operation we try to include the planned date of production and the beginning of production. Capacities are also included, in units relevant to each project (units, megawatts, liters…) We also add, if available, items such as: customers, suppliers, contractors and financers. If, finally, a project is cancelled we will cancel it in the database. Projects are living and we try to grasp as many characteristics as we can. 22 From project to installed capacities
  • 22. 18/01/18 23 The following page lists all the industrial investment announced in India with an industry 4.0 score of 6 or more (on 12). We rank every investment project alongside six criteria representing industry 4.0 tendencies : flexibility (ability to switch from one product, or product caracteristic, to another) ; energy efficiency ; use of digital technologies, social (efforts for workers), environmental and territorial efforts (efforts for surrounding territory). This ranking is based on information available in the newspaper information gathered by our analysts. A project which is not scored may suffer from a lack of communication rather than bad design or implementation. 23 Best industry 4.0 investments Screen copy of the database, for a project ranked 10 out of 12, detailing the measures related to industry 4.0 scoring.
