4. What is Fish?
Fish can be defined as cold-blooded
vertebrate adapted for living in water. It
respires by means of gills and has paired
appendages, if any, in the form of fins.
OR
A limbless cold-blooded vertebrate animal
with gills and fins living wholly in water.
5. Classification of fishes:
Fish are classified into three major groups.
a) Agnatha
b) Chondrichtyes
c) Osteichihtyes
6. Agnatha
They include 108 species, these are the
primitive fish without jaws.
They are about 7 to10 species in Pakistan.
7. Chondrichythyes
These are cartilaginous fishes which
includes 980 species.
There are 10-50 of Sharks, rays & skates
species in Pakistan.
Examples;
Sharks, Rays & skates.
8. Osterictyes
These are the modern bony fishes which
includes 26,898.
The all are about 120 in Pakistan.
Examples;
Salmo trutta, Onchorynious my kiss &
Schyzothoryx fishes etc.
11. Teleoistei
Most of the bony fish belong to this class,
they includes 26,585 species. They are the
modern boney fish which have 40 orders.
Examples;
Trout, Hearing & cat fish etc
12. Cont…
In Pakistan 1099 species are present which
belongs to class Actinoptergii, Sub class
Teleostei.
Have six super order. 13 order, 30 families,
86 genera, 8 Exotic, 78 Indigenous,
Endemic of Kashmir 8 species are cold
water of Himalayas and Hindukush and
Karakorum, total 45 in KPK, 26 are
indigenous and 8 are exotic in KPK.
13. Fishing,
Fishing capacity in Pakistan
Catching of fish is one of the oldest
occupation of the people of Pakistan.
Next to forestry, fishing constitutes the
smallest sector of the Pakistani economy.
Fishing is only a minor sector of Pakistani
economy, constituting 0.3 percent of the
GNP.
14. Cont…
Fishing is the traditional means of
livelihood for about 400,000 Pakistanis.
At percent about ninety thousand of
Pakistani are engaged in fishing profession.
The nominal fish catch comprises the
commercial, industrial and subsistence
catches.
15. Cont…
Fishing in Pakistan is done at least ten
months of the year
The total nominal fish catch has increased
since 1947 from 40,000 metric tons to
590,000 metric tons in 2000.
The total fish catch in thousand metric tons
since 1947 is given below;
16. Cont…
Total fish catch in
thousand metric tons
Year
40,000 1947
80,657 1960
615,904 1998
590,000 2000
627,000 2003-04
581,000 2004-05
630,000 2005-06
668,000 2010-12
17. Cont…
The per capita use of fish in Pakistan is less
than other countries such as Japan, UK, USA
and Bangladesh.
Pakistan exports a reasonable quantity of
shrimp and fish and earns a substantial amount
of foreign exchange.
About 3 per cent in 1985 having fallen from 2
per cent in 1998.
18. Cont…
About 1.2 per cent of the total exports in
2003.
Thus during July-March 2005-06, 630,000
metric tons of fishery products were
exported to more than 40 countries such as
Japan, USA, UK, Germany and Middle East
etc.
19. Cont…
The main export market for Pakistani fish
and shrimp is japan.
In the interior area of Pakistan the use of
fish is in very small quantity.
In Pakistan the fish consumption is more in
Baluchistan & Sindh than Punjab and KPK.
20. Cont…
In Pakistan fish are not caught only on costal
areas but some are also done in Inland areas.
There are two main sources of fish in Pakistan.
Marine fishes (Outland fishes).
Fresh water fishes (Inland fishes).
21. Marine fishing:
The share of marine fisheries is 75 per cent
of the total fish catch.
The marine fishing is done in coastal areas
of Sindh and Baluchistan which has a coast
line of 600 miles long.
During the breeding seasons all fishing is
strictly prohibited.
22. Marine fishing in coastal area of Sindh:
Sindh has a coast line of about 150 mile long.
The Sindh coast account for 70% of the total
marine catch although it constitutes only 33%
of Pakistan's cost.
The Sindh coast has the advantage of a wider
continental shelf(130 km).
Mostly fishermen live on coastal area of Sindh.
23. Marine fishing in coastal area of
Baluchistan:
This coast is about 350 miles long.
This coast is mainly consist of sand dunes due
to which it is less suitable to fishing.
The chief varieties of fish caught over here
are Mackerel, Sardines, Shark and herrings.
It constitutes 67% of the country’s coast but
produces only 30% of the marine catch
24. Fresh water fishing:
Inland fisheries produce about 26% of the
Pakistani’s total fish catch.
Sources are rivers, dams, ponds, canals and
lakes.
The province of Sindh accounts for more
than 60%, Punjab 39%, KPK 1% and
Baluchistan virtually no inland fishing.
25. Cont…
Manchar lake is the largest single source of
supply for fresh water fish.
In Mangla, Tarbela and Warsak fish are also
caught in large quantity.
KPK and Northern Areas are not important
areas for fishing.
26.
27.
28. Hatcheries & Aquaculture:
In Sindh there are two hatcheries at Chilya
and Sukkur and several nurseries one is at
Mando Dero near Sukkur, the other at Husri
near Hydrabad etc.
KPK has two trout hatcheries & one carp
hatchery.
Punjab had six hatcheries & 22 nurseries in
(1995-86).
