- Thank you all for coming, and especially thank you to Joseph and John for putting together such interesting presentations. I hope you are enjoying the cold weather. My talk is about applying the techniques of e-literature to criticize descriptive practices
- But what is the library? Or more generally, the book horde. Lose assemblage, or a body with interacting parts? Libraries as Agents of Culture imply some sort of body-like cohesion. I propose that hypertextuality distinguishes a collection, characteristics of a body, and a pile. Let’s engage in a thought experiment as a close reading of a ideal pre-digital library
- Imagine you are in a library and engaged in one of Svenonius’s searching actions, prior to computerization. You would be faced with three bays
- Thinking about your subject would begin immediately. Cohesive subject broken into parts, privileging certain cultural structures
- Interacting with these objects, alphabetic, implies collocation; shocked teaching research methods to explain that if the author wrote one book, perhaps another?
- Head to the stacks; similar topics nearby, in our imagination nothing is offsite, so aside from materials checked out this represents the complete selection of materials selected
- Pieces interact in a spatial hypertext
- Three basic functions, filtering/separating/dismembering, expanding, linking
- Filtering, expanding, hypertextuality here is only sorting by Relevance, Title, or Date
- Options to expand the search, but not trace linkages; Offsite storage removes items from browsability, electronic and other literature not on the shelf

- 130 0 tells us this is a type of a large class of book, namely the Bible, Old Testament, in Greek, the Septuagint, printed in 1653. Criticise the cannonization of the bible, how it is represented here, but not my concern. Why is this different than descriptive information?
