1.Introduction:
The title for ENBE final project is, Project Two, Built Environment – “The Future City
Representation”. For Part A (individual component) in this final project,students need to
pretend as a mayor of “X” city which needs to propose a new layout of the city due to some
reasons that the “X” city is no longer livable. Type for the new city can be either
underground, underwater, floating on water, in the air, or enhance the existing city.
Students also allowed combining two type of the city for our new city.
Data and information from ancient cities, present cities and future cities have been collected
and some researched about component and element of city have done for purpose just to
understand and produce a sustainable and livable city .The new “X” city are established in
certain conditions and rules such as citizen are Malaysian, population between 150,000 –
500,000 and new city is smaller than Subang Jaya (70km2).
Symbiotic relationship, basic unit, form and function of the elements of the natural and
built environment have been investigated, studied and analyzedto overcome the problems
faced by the “X” city which is also related to the subject (Elements of Natural and Built
Environments, ENBE).

2.The City :
2.1 The city definition:
City is, the permanently size of population which is greater than the town or village with
legal or conventional distinction that can vary between regions and nations. A city have a
stationary population which doesn‟t migrate .
In addition, concept of city also refers to certain type of community, urban community,
the culture known as urbanism.
2.2What makes a city:
Basically cities are made by high populations or the highest forms of social organization
which does not migrate. In the city, consists of road system for transportations, building
laws, business center, sport center, food center for food supply, educational systems,
sanitations, land usage, housing and so on.
2.3 What makes a good city:
First of all, the city must in mixed neighborhoods to make sure the city is in density.
Then , the city must also have a walk able streets with large footpaths along the road to
provide spaces for a density community. In a good city, a secure water supply and
sanitation system is provided in good conditions. In addition, safeness of the area of
residential is important to make a good city. So, safeguard such as police must be
included in the city area.
Besides that, differences stages of educational systems and business centre are provided
in the city. High qualities of medical requirement are provided the city such as hospital,
pharmacy and also clinics. Difference types of public transportations are provided also
such as buses and Monorail. Public spaces around the residential area provided.
2.4 What is the future city:
Future city is upcoming places for human to live in which maybe exist after 20 years,30 years
or 50 years. Existing of the future city can be any reasons, such as, the advance of the present
city to create another city, nature disaster happened in the present city which no longer
liveable, or maybe the present city attacked by the enemy in World War 3.Architects and
designer now a day, have to imagine and design out the difference outlook of buildings which
are sustainable and liveable. Future city can be located in any places such as in underwater,
underground, top in the air, floating on water or also maybe out of the space. All the
infrastructures, facilities and etcetera will be more advance and develop compare to the

present city. The social living in the future city such as culture and habits might be different
or same compare to present city according to the conditions and situation around the future
city located.Example of future city is Syph , Australia. The concept of city is designed as
underwater city.

3.Investigation & Data Collection in Ancient Cities
Ancient Rome
Ancient Rome was the largest city in the then known world. It is thought that Rome’s population
was over 1 million people when the city was at the height of its power. From Rome, the heart of
government beat; military decisions were taken and the vast wealth Rome earned was invested
in a series of magnificent buildings.
To start with, many buildings in Rome were built around the forum. Traditionally, this had been a
market place and an area where people met. Therefore, it would have been a natural place to put
government buildings, temples and palaces. As Rome grew, however, the forum became more
and more crowded. Therefore, a second city centre was planned and built some distance from
the forum but still in Rome itself.
Rome itself had some magnificent buildings erected within the city. Some exist to this day, all be
it in a less wonderful state. The most famous is probably the Colosseum where thousands of
Roman citizens would gather for their entertainment – be it animals fighting or gladiators etc.
Such grand buildings were constructed so that emperors would be remembered by future
generations. The Colosseum was built on the orders of the Emperor Vespasian and completed
when the Emperor Titus was in power. The building was finally completed in AD 80.
Rome also had numerous triumphal arches constructed throughout the city to celebrate military
victories. These served a dual purpose. First, they were a celebration of the military victories the
Romans had and, second, they were a reminder to the people of Rome of how powerful
the army was.
As with any city, Rome had its rich and poor areas. The poor could only afford to live in wooden
houses which were a serious fire risk in a hot country like Italy. On a number of occasions, Rome
suffered severe damage as a result of fires starting in the city’s slums. The slums were also
dangerous places to go to if you had any money as crime was very common. The Emperor
Augustus created a police force to patrol the city but the poor areas remained all but untamed.
However, for the influential people of Rome, this was of little importance as they never visited
such areas.
Conclusion for Rome:
Through this investigation, I have learned about some important aspects of ancient Roman life.
As you can see, ancient Rome was the birthplace of many significant technological, political,
social, and cultural advancements.

London is the largest and capital city of the United Kingdom.
London is also the largest city in the European Union.
The estimated population of Greater London on 1 January 2005
was 7,421,328 with a metropolitan area population of over 12.5
million.
London's population includes a very diverse range of peoples,
cultures and religions, making it one of the most cosmopolitan
cities in Europe and, indeed, the world. Over 300 languages are
spoken in London, making the capital the most linguistically
diverse city in the world.
London is the home of many global institutions, organisations and companies, and as
such retains a leading role in global affairs.
London has a great number of important buildings, including world-famous museums,
theatres, concert halls, airports, railway stations, palaces, and offices. London is also
home to foreign embassies, consulates and High Commissions.
Arts and Culture
With its huge Turbine Hall, the Tate modern is the place to experience modern and
contemporary art. We can see work by Picasso, Dali, and Pollock all for free and the best
of the British at the National Portrait Gallery.

HISTORY
London Underground was formed in 1985, but its history dates back to 1863 when the world's first
underground railway opened.
Today, London Underground is a major business with three million passenger journeys made every day,
serving 275 stations and over 408 km of railway.

Past and future
London has changed a lot since the first stretch of line - the Metropolitan, or Met - opened on 9 January
1863. The first stretch measured six kilometres (nearly four miles) and ran between Paddington
(Bishop's Road) and Farringdon Street.
Cut and cover
To build the Met, streets along the route were dug up, tracks laid in a trench, covered with a brick-lined
tunnel and the road surface replaced. Known as the 'cut and cover' method, this was quick and effective,
but created as many problems as it was designed to solve. It caused congestion during construction
and it was abandoned towards the end of the 19th century. By then, however, the Metropolitan was a
success, stretching ever further across Middlesex, through Hertfordshire and into Buckinghamshire.
Other companies were keen to get involved and by Christmas 1868, the Metropolitan District had
opened a line between Westminster and South Kensington.
This linked to a branch line from the original Met and some eastward extensions. These railways
completed today's Circle line by 1884.
Once the system had started there was no stopping it and the search was on for further opportunities.
The Thames Tunnel
Twenty years before the Met steamed into history, Sir Marc Brunel - and his famous son Isambard - had
built the Thames Tunnel between Rotherhithe and Wapping.
This was the first underwater tunnel in the world. The method used was similar to coal mining.
Engineers sank vertical shafts and excavated the tunnels from within a metal shield. It is a tribute to the
Brunels that major refurbishment to the tunnel was only needed during the 1990s.
Originally designed for horse-drawn traffic, it opened in 1843 for pedestrians, became a railway tunnel in
1869 and now carries the East London line.
Conclusion
London - the most populous city within the European Union with an official population of 7.5
million (metropolitan area – 13mil.) is so diverse and the range of peoples, cultures and religions
is so wide that it’s by no means possible to get to know it in a week or two. It’s spoken, that one
needs a year to become aware of local attitudes and people. Everyone who travels to London is
in advance reassured that he or she will have a ―great time‖ there. That’s unequivocal.

5.Investigation & Data Collection in future cities:
THE SEACRAPER
The Seascraper—a self-sufficient community of homes, offices, and recreational space—was
designed with the intention of slowing urban sprawl, according to its designers.
The vessel's energy independence would come from underwater turbines powered by deep-sea
currents as well as from a photovoltaic skin that could collect solar energy. The concave hull
would collect rainwater and allow daylight to reach lower levels. Fresh water would come from
treated and recycled rainwater via an onboard desalination plant.
This green machine would also help keep marine populations afloat, so to speak, with a buoyant
base that serves as a reef and discharges fish food in the form of nutrients pumped from the
deep sea, the U.S. design team says.
Why floating City?
Floating construction by comparison with conventional urban development
offers a number of advantages that support the growing market for this form of
building.
- makes multiple use of space possible: combines urban development and
water storage;
- resolves flooding problems;
- allows for flexible town planning;

- has international allure;
- requires no input of sand to prepare land for
building, thus saving time and money;
- incurs no cost items from repairs arising from soil settlement.
6. The “X” City:
6 Brief of „X‟ city:
During the year of 2030, the rapid development of industries in the „X‟ city named Subang
Jaya which is located in the state of Selangor in Malaysia and the advance of technology
makes the people‟s life comfortable. Developments and advance of the area sure will
involve with deforestation. In this situation, most of the natural forest on the earth will be
greatly reduce, to build up industrial area. Decreasing amount of plants effected the
pollution of air level that will increase. This is because plant will absorb carbon dioxide in
the surrounding and produce oxygen that will make the surrounding air fresh.
In addition to that, at that period, people live in luxuries life which most family member in
a house will have personal car. This causes excessive of cars in the city lead to the increase
of carbon monoxide being release to the atmosphere. In naturally, earth will reflects the
heat from the sun that we called it as infrared ray and send it back to space. Unfortunately,
the increases of carbon gases in the atmosphere will block the reflection of ray. Thinker the
layer of gases, more heat will be absorb, then causes the temperature in the earth increases.
As people focused in developing and doesn‟t concern about this issue, serious global
warming occurred. In 2033, temperature in Subang Jaya was extremely high, causes the
city no longer liveable.
Populations in Subang Jaya:
Population of Subang Jaya estimate around 710,000 which consists of different races,
religions and also culture. The three main races in Malaysia are Malay, Chinese and Indian.
Culture and jobs:
Different races in Malaysia automatically will have different type of culture. New year
celebration for different races will be celebrated in different time. For instance, Malay

people will celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri in August or September according to muslim‟s
calendar. As for Chinese, they celebrate Chinese New Year in January or February
according to Chinese‟s calendar while Indian celebrate Deepavali in September or October
according to their calendar.Besides that, as a career, people in Subang Jaya mostly involved
in education field, social services, health services, government services and etcetera.
Good future city:
As the condition of Global Warming getting worse, people in Subang Jaya need a new
place as a shelter to continue survive. A place with good air quality and suitable
temperature condition will be a good future city. In addition, solid infrastructure and high
quality of healthcare facilities is also needed for a better city. City with low criminal and
low health risks is also consider as good city.
Conclusion for Subang Jaya city:
As the problem of global warming that causes the rise of temperature in Subang Jaya , the
city was no longer liveable. To rescue the people in Subang Jaya, a new better city is needed.
7. The New “X” City – Floating On Water Wonderland City :
Wonderland City:
Wonderland can be consider as a luxury city because all the facilities provided will be high
qualities and cut down the living cost. WONDERLAND is a well plan city. The
transportation for the people living in that city is a bit different. People have to Kaya-King or
take city ferry to the destination. Not only that, restrict city only can drive electric car (Only
have 50cars for who really can pay for it) or bicycle so that there will be no traffic jam with
the water access. People living in this city is very comfortable and relax because the zoning
area had planned very well. People in the city will no longer need GPS to get navigation
because the city is using a calgary map concept. With this concept, people will not easy get
lost and easier to find that place they wanted to go.
Why the city floating on water?

As the problem of global warming that causedthe city hopeless, the city was no longer
liveable. The polar ice sheets are melting, dry land cracked and others. So, people have to live
on the water for their own good. Water can produce hydroelectric energy and many more.

9.0 Conclusion:
As conclusion, any is possible to happen in year of 2033 which is in the future and
people should take serious and concern about this issue and ways to overcome by
thinking what they need in the future especially for future generation. For instance,
collection all the sample seed of plants in lab to ensure the species will not extinct if
the world change, and this also to ensure the sustain of food for the future. Besides
that, shelter is important for human being, specialist profession should think about
future place or shelter.
What I have learned from this project is to be more close to people needs and create
something that can make it simple. A great future city is a city that is sustainable and
liveable. Last but not least, during my research I gained a lot of extra information
about built environment.
