Project proposal title and date:
How to survive a slasher movie.
Main area of activity:
I’ll be making a film with the theme of the horror genre.
Rationale:
In year one I made a music video Devil Cam, audio horror story Wraith House, video game trailer
The Baseball Basher and horror FMP the Paranoia of Edward Stanton. In year two I made a York
Geeks and Gamers Guide; John Snow documentary and I’m currently doing an FMP on how to
survive a slasher movie. I’ve learned how to use a camera, edit on iMovie, Adobe Photoshop, and
Adobe Premiere. I have also learned how to use mood, tone, and lighting and how to develop gory
special effects. I’ll use these skills to make the project look professional and polished (well edited)
with a successful execution of the tone I want to make for my project. My previous FMP was too
ambitious with a short time limit and difficulty in finding and directing the actors. I have learned to
develop an idea for my project that is achievable and can be produced easily.
Project Concept:
The concept of my project is to create a parody of a self-aware horrorslasher movie where a
narrator tells a group of teenagers how to survive against a slasher in a typical horrorslasher film.
My project will aim to be an intelligent and compelling parody which is portrayed in a well-defined
location and told in a humorous way. My aim is to explore this well-known genre in detail and more
deeply and display the troupes you see in a typical slasher film from a new perspective. I will need
to research self-aware horror movies like Scream, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
and Freaky, read articles about the trend towards horror films being a parody of their own genre
and more sophisticated with higher production quality than earlier films, and learn about filming
techniques and how to portray gory special effects. This will help my project by giving me the skills
to make the parody both funny and scary with realistic effects which builds on the experience of
previous horror film producers. This will also allow me to observe and draw on the lighting, mood,
special effects, and way in which these films were produced by Wes Craven, Tom Savani, and
Alfred Hitchcock to make my parody of the genre more realistic and higher quality.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
I plan to evaluate my work using a focus group of my classmates after completing my initial filming
of the parody, through referencing my earlier work and my diary to avoid mistakes made in
previous projects, and to allow time to re-film after receiving this feedback. As part of my final self-
reflection, I will also evaluate the film prior to final production to ensure that it successfully portrays
the parody of the slasher/horror film genre with the correct production quality and tone. This project
will significantly help to develop my working practices as I continue my media studies and career
by increasing my experience in film production and helping me to develop the sophistication of my
films and my writing. It will also help me to learn how to incorporate new production techniques
such as lighting, the use of creative special effects and how to use focus groups to get feedback
and then re-film scenes based on this feedback.
