Dear Judges:
Hello, my name is Stephanie B. Smith. Since the eighth grade I have had an interest in a career in
the field of education. I have learned that teaching is a career that involves both passion and hard
work. In addition to this, teaching is a job that allows you to touch the lives of others and make a
difference in the world; both of which I hope to do someday. That is why I used my Senior
Project as an opportunity to further explore the teaching field by acting as an assistant teacher to
my project facilitator, Mrs. Brenda Guyer.
My product is a lesson plan that closely follows Georgia’s standards for a high school level
Honors World History class. My lesson plan presented only the most important information
about the French Revolution to the students who were involved in my project. This relates to my
research paper because I had to address one of the central problems in education. That is, what
exactly should education be focused on in order to help students reach their full potential? My
product forced me to consider which information I should and should not teach to my students. I
had to find a focal point that would not only allow me to catch their interest, but also help them
to learn a few things. Upon completing my product, my main obstacle was figuring out how to
keep the students interested in the various topics. I was able to overcome this issue by using
videos in my lectures and asking the students questions about the subjects every so often.
My topic on education and the teaching field as well as my research tie into a teaching career. I
learned that to be a successful teacher, you have to be willing to put lots of time and effort into
the job. My senior project also taught me many things about myself. I found that if I want to be a
teacher in the future, I have to be thick skinned and a lot more confident in myself and what I do.
After completing my project, I have realized that teaching may not be in my postsecondary
endeavors.
All in all, I feel as if the Senior Project was a great learning experience. It gave me a chance to
see if teaching is the right career for me. I advise those who are to complete the Senior Project
next year to choose something they truly enjoy doing. That way the Senior Project will definitely
be an exciting experience. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. I hope you enjoyed this
