Research Finding Credible Sources and Citing Resources
What are credible sources? Peer-reviewed sources are ones that have been critically evaluated by experts on the subject who evaluate the writing for accuracy, clarity, quality of research, etc. Changes are made before publication. Some databases allow search results to be limited to peer-reviewed articles on AVL.
Refereed Journals In scholarly publishing refereed journals are ones in which experts, usually peers of the author, critically evaluate manuscripts submitted before the research is published.
Other Great Resources Your SVHS/JCIB LIBRARY!  Your librarians……… Mrs. Parker Mrs. Brooke Mrs. Roe, library assistant
Clues for Credibility in Web Addresses .com (commercial) Look for bias. .org (organization) Look for bias. .gov (government) Should be credible. .edu (education) Should be credible but check for student submitted works vs scholarly work.
Web Possibilities http://www.about.com/ is a site that has subject area experts to help researchers find credible net resources. Your AVL, Alabama Virtual Library has MANY databases with accurate information. Be sure to check that you want full text articles and refereed publications to ensure credibility!
We’ve done our research….Now, why is it important that we document and give credit for our sources and how do we do it?
Giving Credit Give credit…… When using facts, ideas, key words, and quotations When using facts that aren’t common knowledge For explanatory notes You don’t have to give credit…… When using indisputable information When using widely-known facts
What happens if I don’t give credit where credit is due? OOOPS! Let’s see what has happened to those who didn’t give credit when they should have!
We know what can happen. We want to give credit andcite our sources.Sooooo, how do we do it?
Noodletools.comis a great place to get help for knowing how to correctly cite a resource using MLA or APA style. Check it out!
Are we ready to roll? Have you chosen your subject? Have you gotten information from credible websites? From you library? From other libraries? Have you cited your sources correctly?
