Exercise 2 (pages 5-6)
In the aeroplane just before landing
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. The aeroplane will be landing on the runway of Damascus International Airport within ten minutes, God Almighty willing. Please return
to your seats and fasten your seatbelts in preparation for landing.
Whoever wishes to set their watch to the local time, it is now four thirty in the afternoon. The
temperature is thirty-five degrees centigrade. Please would everybody remain in their seats
until the plane comes to a complete standstill. Please ensure that you take all your belongings
with you when you leave [the plane].
I would like to call your attention to the fact that life imprisonment is the penalty for those trafficking in drugs or peddling them in Syria.
I hope you have enjoyed the journey with us on Syrian Airlines. If you have any queries or
require any help, our airport staff would be at your service.
Hoping that we will see you again in the near future, God willing. Until that time, may I wish
you an enjoyable time and a pleasant stay in Syria. Until we meet again.
