CloudStack 4.18 will include several new features such as volume encryption, secure KVM VNC connections, VM autoscaling, and edge zones. It is expected to be released in Q4/Q1 as a long term support release. Some features still have work in progress and may not make the final release. The release includes many bug fixes and improvements to the management framework.

Philipp explains the best performing Open Source software-defined storage software available to Apache CloudStack today. It consists of two well-concerted components. LINSTOR and DRBD. Each of them also has its independent use cases, where it is deployed alone. In this presentation, the combination of these two is examined. They form the control plane and the data plane of the SDS. We will touch on: Performance, scalability, hyper-convergence (data-locality for high IO performance), resiliency through data replication (synchronous within a site, 2-way, 3-way, or more), snapshots, backup (to S3), encryption at rest, deduplication, compression, placement policies (regarding failure domains), management CLI and webGUI, monitoring interface, self-healing (restoring redundancy after device/node failure), the federation of multiple sites (async mirroring and repeatedly snapshot difference shipping), QoS control (noisy neighbors limitation) and of course: complete integration with CloudStack for KVM guests. It is Open Source software following the Unix philosophy. Each component solves one task, made for maximal re-usability. The solution leverages the Linux kernel, LVM and/or ZFS, and many Open Source software libraries. Building on these giant Open Source foundations, not only saves LINBIT from re-inventing the wheels, it also empowers your day 2 operation teams since they are already familiar with these technologies. Philipp Reisner is one of the founders and CEO of LINBIT in Vienna/Austria. He holds a Dipl.-Ing. (comparable to MSc) degree in computer science from Technical University in Vienna. His professional career has been dominated by developing DRBD, a storage replication software for Linux. While in the early years (2001) this was writing kernel code, today he leads a company of 30 employees with locations in Austria and the USA. Abstract: Historically, the forty microservices making up the IBM Cloud UI have been deployed as apps on Cloud Foundry (CF), an open source PaaS. But, recently, this enterprise microservice system has been migrated to run on Kubernetes to take advantage of improved orchestration, higher availability, and better performance. Tony Erwin & Jonathan Schweikhart will discuss their journey and provide insights into the advantages of Kube over CF. Even more importantly, they will describe approaches to solving new problems that took the place of old ones, such as: 1) adapting PaaS apps to run as containers on Kube, 2) enabling geo load balancing between the different platforms (to vet Kube before entirely replacing CF), 3) integrating tools like Prometheus into existing monitoring systems, and more! Their team's experiences will help you avoid pitfalls as you look to perform your own migrations to Kube! NOTE: CF is always evolving and the limitations on private networking and private host names mentioned in the slides are no longer current. If you have access to CF API 2.115.0 or higher (released on June 25, 2018), you can leverage CF's service discovery feature (see https://docs.cloudfoundry.org/devguide/deploy-apps/cf-networking.html#discovery ).

The XenServer virtualization platform is used by well over 100,000 organizations to fulfill their IT objectives. Common scenarios include traditional server virtualization such as that found with VMware vSphere, delivery of large scale cloud services via Apache CloudStack or OpenStack, and as a platform for high performance desktop virtualization through XenDesktop. These use cases all have requirements of scale and manageability which imply solid deployments. The content in this deck was presented in workshop form at FOSSETCON in 2015. Much of the information contained will work for any XenServer version, but XenServer 6.5 was covered. The audience was assumed to have some familiarity with virtualization concepts, but no assumptions about XenServer was made. Core concepts covered included; storage design, network design and operations, scalability and failure domains, as well as core features such as virtualized graphics.

In cloud computing environments, VMs require fast access to resources like storage and networking. The hardware that the VMs access is implemented in software and/or by passing through a dedicated hardware device. Software-based solutions consume extra CPU cycles, thus resulting in poor performance. Also, these require to expose a device-model to the guest, thus increasing the attack surface. Conversely, hardware passthrough provides better performance and security but can be expensive in terms of the number of physical resources, since each device is dedicated to a single VM. This talk focuses on how Vates is working on sharing hardware resources among VMs by relying on dedicated processors named Data Processing Units (DPU). More precisely, Vates work on offloading Xen hypervisor of storage emulation by relying on Kalray K200 DPU PCIe controllers, a hardware accelerator based on MPPA architecture. ----------------------------------------- The CloudStack Collaboration Conference 2023 took place on 23-24th November.
