20. SEASON SUMMARY
To say the 2014 season for the Kane County Cougars was special would
be an understatement. In their second and final year affiliated with the
Chicago Cubs, the Cougars strung together nearly 100 wins including
a perfect playoff run for the franchise’s second championship. Under
the management of former big leaguer Mark Johnson, the Kane Coun-
ty club boasted a 91-49 regular season record following three playoff
series sweeps for a 7-0 postseason mark. A championship celebration
was just the icing on the cake for the squad that finished as the Minor
League Baseball team of the year.
Despite a rough 2013 season, Cougars fans still were able to witness
highly touted prospects begin their careers at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
The 2014 club didn’t have as many flashy names like the Albert Almora’s
and Dan Vogelbach’s of the prior season, but still plenty of talent to
enjoy. Paul Blackburn, the Cubs’ first round supplemental pick in 2012,
got the opening day nod for the Cougars and became a solid starter in
the rotation. Other high draft picks like Duane Underwood and Tyler
Skulina were included, not to mention a 19-year-old Taiwanese right-
hander Jen-Ho Tseng that blossomed both on and off the field in his
first year playing American baseball. Offensively the Cougars, again,
weren’t full of star struck identities, but a consistent lineup that used a
different hero every night. A couple of second generation ball players
sported white, black and green last season in Shawon Dunston Jr. and
Daniel Lockhart. The biggest buzz at the plate came in the middle of
June when the Cubs’ first round pick of 2014 Kyle Schwarber joined the
club. Despite spending less than a month with the Cougars, the pow-
erful left-handed hitter gave Cubs’ fans a promising glimpse into the
future. Throughout the long grind of the season, team leaders Jacob
Rogers, Ben Carhart and Cael Brockmeyer all stepped up big.
Johnson’s club looked good early on winning 11 of its first 14 and finishing
the opening month with an 18-8 record. It was an exciting start to the
season, but on May 17th the team first showed signs of an exceptional
ball club. Welcoming in the Quad Cities River Bandits to Fifth Third
Bank Ballpark on “Halfway to Halloween” night, the Cougars completed
18
21. 19
SEASON SUMMARY
the eighth no-hitter in franchise history thanks to Tyler Skulina and Na-
than Dorris. Skulina kept the River Bandits hitless for seven and one-
third innings before the ball was handed to the left-handed Dorris, who
retired all five hitters. It was the first no-hitter for the Cougars in almost
exactly three years.
The Cougars had a handful of exciting moments throughout the sea-
son. Fifth Third Bank Ballpark became an extremely comfortable place
for the team, as they only lost TWO series in their home ballpark all
season. Blackburn, Jose Arias, Jordan Hankins and Will Remillard were
all named to the All-Star Game in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In late June,
Brockmeyer finished a cycle against the Beloit Snappers with a two-run
tie-breaking cycle triple en route to a Cougars win. Dunston Jr. con-
nected on a walk-off hit in early August on an evening his father finally
had a chance to attend a game. A 15 inning marathon in Cedar Rapids
ended with infielder/catcher Carhart taking the mound and pitching
his first win since his college days. As the season continued, the team
only improved. August showed a record of 24-6 with just one home
loss. It was difficult to spot a flaw in the team, and that was magnified
in a perfect playoff run.
The Cougars received an unexpected guest at the beginning of the
postseason with a healing Cubs third baseman. Mike Olt was sched-
uled for a rehab stint and Kane County was the closest location still
competing. Olt provided a couple of big home runs against the Wis-
consin Timber Rattlers, including a game-tying two run shot late in the
clincher game. Jeimer Candelario finished off the series with a walk-
off hit in the 13th inning and the Cougars were on their way to Cedar
Rapids for the League Championship Series. The Kernels finished the
season with solid play and came back from near elimination in the first
round, but the Cougars used big performances by some unlikely pow-
er hitters. Mark Zagunis was the difference maker in game one, while
Carlos Penalver, who only went deep once during the regular season,
launched a home run in game two to help finish off yet another series
sweep.
The Lake County Captains finished in last place of the Eastern Divi-
sion in the first half of the 2014 season, but used a 38-31 record in the
second half to snag a playoff bid. After upsetting South Bend in the
first round, the Captains were also riding a 4-game playoff win streak
with a sweep over Fort Wayne. It was an all-county battle in a best-
of-five series. Both teams used their offense early in game one, but
Tseng turned a rocky start into a solid outing as the Cougars edged the
opening contest 4-3. Game two was a lot more dominant as Duane Un-
derwood worked six hitless innings with eight strikeouts. The Captains’
first knock didn’t come until the eighth inning, but it didn’t matter as the
Cougars paced a 6-0 win for a two-games-to-nothing lead.
The Cougars’ final game of the season was a microcosm of the entire
year: solid pitching, great bullpen work, clutch hitting and consistent
defense. Despite Lake County taking a lead in the opening frame, the
Cougars piled up seven unanswered runs and finished the Midwest
22. League Championship Series with a 7-2 win. When the Cougars cap-
tured the title in 2001, they didn’t have a chance to celebrate. That
series was cut short after the attacks on September 11th in New York
and the Cougars were named champions after taking a 1-0 series lead.
A groundball to Jacob Rogers sealed the deal and, this time, started
a celebration the team and franchise will never forget. During the off-
season, Minor League Baseball named the 2014 Cougars the team of
the year. Mark Johnson was also honored as Midwest League manager
of the year.
Now the Cougars begin a new chapter teaming up with the Arizona Dia-
mondbacks for the 25th season in franchise history, hoping for another
memorable year.
