Social Media and Young Generation: A Case ofBangladesh
2. Abstract
Bangladesh, a leader in the developing world is currently showing magnificent strides in economic
development and technological application. Now Bangladesh is one of the technological hub in the world.
Bangladesh government’s project titled ‘Vision 2021’ and ‘Digital Bangladesh’ made the countries
position higher in technological aspects. It’s a small country in geographical land area, but has a huge
population.
Considering the demography of Bangladesh youth represents roughly one third of the country.
Bangladeshi youth ages between 10 to 24 years amounts 47.7 million in 2017, which is approximately
30% of the total population (PRB 2013). This vast majority of young generation is tech savvy. A huge
intrusion of Internet in the country is also enhancing development. Report by Broadband Commission, a
conjunction of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and UNESCO titled ‘State of Broadband
2016’ shows that in mobile broadband usage Bangladesh’s position is 137th
where 13.2% of total
population have access to internet.
In recent budget discussion Finance minister MA Muhit said that 41.51% people use internet in
Bangladesh as a report of BTRC. Most of the users of internet use only social media, facebook and they
are youth. So, we can see that there is a huge impact of social media among youths and this study
examined the effects of social media in youths in Bangladesh perspective.
3. Introduction
By the passes of time technology improved and intended many ways of communication. Social media is
the last addition of this race of intention. Social Media is an important way of communication in
developed world as well as in Bangladesh. Actually not only for communication but also for many
purposes social media is using now a days. It’s become a part of daily life. Blog, facebook, twitter, flickr
all are social media.
Although all people of our country can’t access to the internet/ who access they use social media usually.
Social media is spreading rapidly in our country. All classes and ages use it. That’s why there is huge
impact of it in our society.
Social Media effected our personal/ social/ and national life in different times. In recent its impact was
more than ever. Most important issues such as Shahbag Movement, Attack in Ramu’s Buddhist and
Nasirnagar attack of Brahmanbaria was notable. These were took place by the help of one of the most
popular social media facebook. So it also working as a strategic factor in our society. There are also a
thousands of positive effect of social media in youths. Startups, Social media based business and
economic activities, public health & other issues like education, political propaganda ect and personal
blogging and communication are increasing through social media. Social networking is an act of
engagement. Groups of people with common interests or liked minds associate together on social
networking sites and build relationships through community. Social networking websites role like an
online community of internet consumers.
4. Objective ofthe Study
The objective of this study is to know the effects and impacts of social media in young generation in
Bangladesh focusing on the positive and negative points specially.
5. Sources ofData
This paper is based on the secondary sources. Data has been collected from books, journals, research
papers and reports, internet, magazine, newspaper’s reports and websites as well as social media. Data has
been analyzed in qualitative way.
6. Concept ofMedia
Media is the collective communication outlets or tools that are used to store and deliver information or
data. It is either associated with communication media, or the specialized mass media communication
businesses such as print media and the press, photography, advertising, cinema, broadcasting (radio and
television) and publishing.
The word media is defined as "one of the means or channels of general communication in society, as
newspapers, radio, television etc. The beginning of human communication through designed channels, i.e.
not vocalization or gestures, dates back to ancient cave paintings, drawn maps, and writing.
The concept of media is one that is used to refer to all media in which an idea or message can be
transmitted. Today, however, the concept is commonly related with certain media, more specifically with
newspapers or newspapers, television, radio, internet, graphic publications.
Media are the channel that marketers and advertisers used to convey a message to your market goal,
therefore, the choice of the means to be used in an advertising campaign is a decision of the utmost
importance because it has a direct impact on the results that are obtained with it.
Therefore, both marketers and advertisers need to know what are the different types of media, what are
and what are their advantages and disadvantages, with the aim that can make the best decisions when
selecting the media to be used.
7. Concept ofSocial Media
The variety of evolving stand-alone and built-in social media services introduces a challenge of
definition. The idea that social media are defined by their ability to bring people together has been seen as
too broad a definition, as this would suggest that the telegraph and telephone were also social media – not
the technologies scholars are intending to describe. The terminology is unclear, with some referring to
social media as social networks.
A 2015 paper reviewed the prominent literature in the area and identified four commonalities unique to
then-current social media services:
1. social media are Web 2.0 Internet-based applications,
2. user-generated content (UGC) is the lifeblood of the social media organism,
3. users create service-specific profiles for the site or app that are designed and maintained by the
social media organization,
4. social media facilitate the development of online social networks by connecting a user's profile
with those of other individuals or groups.
In 2016, Merriam-Webster defined social media as "Forms of electronic communication (such as Web
sites) through which people create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages,
etc.
The term social media is usually used to describe social networking sites such as:
a. Facebook – an online social networking site that allows users to create their personal profiles,
share photos and videos, and communicate with other users
b. Twitter – an internet service that allows users to post "tweets" for their followers to see updates in
real-time
c. LinkedIn – a networking website for the business community that allows users to create
professional profiles, post resumes, and communicate with other professionals and job-seekers.
d. Pinterest – an online community that allows users to display photos of items found on the web by
"pinning" them and sharing ideas with others.
e. Snapchat – an app for mobile devices that allows users to send and share photos of themselves
doing their daily activities.
Social media technologies take many different forms including blogs, business networks, enterprise social
networks, forums, microblogs, photo sharing, products/services review, social bookmarking, social
gaming, social networks, video sharing, and virtual worlds. The development of social media started off
with simple platforms such as sixdegrees.com. Unlike instant messaging clients such as ICQ and AOL's
AIM, or chat clients like IRC,iChat or Chat Television, sixdegrees.com was the first online business that
was created for realpeople, using their real names. However, the first social networks were short-lived
because their users lost interest. The Social Network Revolution has led to the rise of the networking
sites. Research shows that the audience spends 22 percent of their time on social networking sites, thus
proving how popular social media platforms have become. This increase is because of the smart phones
that are now in the daily lives of most humans.
8. Evolution ofSocial Media
Today, everyone knows and uses social media. Even the most remote parts of the world have heard about
Facebook and Twitter, and they probably use it every day too. However,it wasn’t like this a decade ago.
Not as many people had internet access at that time, and smartphones were not even introduced in the
market. Today, most of us can’t live without social media. In fact,we scroll through Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram, or Pinterest at least thrice every hour.
Most people define social media as the ability to use the internet to share and connect with others almost
instantly. If we go by this definition, social media can be traced back to one website alone – no, it’s not
Facebook. The first social media site was a website called ‘Six Degrees’ that was launched in 1997. It
allowed its users to create a profile and then befriend other users. From Six Degrees, the internet emerged
into the era of instant messaging and blogging.
As the millennium changed, almost 100 million people had access to the internet. At that time, however,
social media was looked upon as an unusual hobby. Nevertheless, people all across the world began to
use chat rooms to make new friends, to date, and to discuss topics with other like-minded people.
However, the huge boom of social media was yet to come.
LinkedIn was yet another website that was one of the very first social media websites. A lot of social
networking sites we have today are inspired from and are similar to LinkedIn. Even back in 2002, when
LinkedIn was founded, it was aimed towards professionals who wanted to network with one another, and
functions the way even today.
In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook, which went on to become a social media giant. Even after
all these years,Facebook is the number one social networking site there is, boasting over two billion
users. In 2006, the popularity of SMS and text messaging inspired Jack Dorsey,Biz Stone, Noah Glass,
and Evan Williams to create Twitter. Today, Twitter has a staggering 500 million user-base,a number
that is growing even as you read this article.
Before long, severalother websites came into being. Instagram was launched in 2010 for iOS users and in
2012 for Android users. Today, it is one of the top-most social media sites for photo sharing. At the close
of the 2000s, social media was not only widely used, but it also became widespread in business. Today,
almost all brands are present on social media, and it is unusual when you come across a business that
doesn’t have a strong social media presence.
As of 2017, there are thousands of social media platforms. Some platforms are more popular than others
but each platform has a loyal audience, no matter however small. For example, Instagram caters to an
audience that communicates through photographs while Twitter is perfect for those who like to keep their
communication to the point. With innovative and exciting technology just around the corner, the further
evolution of social media will be interesting to witness.
9. Statistics Related to Social Media
According to the article "The Emerging Role of Social Media in Political and Regime Change" by Rita
Safranek, the Middle East and North Africa region has one of the most youthful populations in the world,
with people under 25 making up between 35–45% of the population in each country. They make up the
majority of social media users, including about 17 million Facebook users,25,000 Twitter accounts and
40,000 active blogs, according to the Arab Advisors Group. Before reviewing Bangladesh perspective we
now showing some statistical information about social media around the world.

users. The Bangladesh capital has 22 million active Facebook users, which is 1.1 percent of the total
monthly active users of the social networking site across the globe, according to a study conducted by We
Are Social and Hootsuit.
The study was conducted in 2016 on only Facebook but in 2017, the organizations are trying to depict the
use of internet in their 'Global Digital Statshot Q2 2017' report. Around 15 million reside in Dhaka.
People staying around the Dhaka city corporations were also taken into account in the study.
Bangkok topped the list with 30 million active Facebook users while Jakarta, placed third, had nearly the
same amount of active users of the site in Dhaka. Among the countries, the US has the highest number of
active users of the social networking site - around 219 million.
India is ranked second with 213 million active Facebook users. The report also said internet reached
around half the global population with 3.77 billion users. They include 2.78 billion who are active in at

Social to solving brand and business problems.
b. Media Usage Analysis
Social media usage in Bangladesh id comparatively high than any other country. Here is some reports,
one on only facebook and another is for all social media by The University of Professionals Bangladesh.
According to ITU Bangladesh has 617300 internet users till July, 2010. Facebook user rate is higher than
the internet user rate in Bangladesh. The total facebook user in Bangladesh is 1,020,560, which is 165%
higher than the internet user. That means every internet connection has 1.6 facebook user.
Fig:1 Active users of Social media
This report shows the total view of worldwide social media users data. Among these users almost 80% are
young who’s age between 18-30. Bangladesh is not an alien country, this picture is also accurate for
youths of Bangladesh too. Another report is below;
Fig 2: Facebook’s top countries & cities
State Minister for Information and Communications Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak said that the
number of Facebook users in Bangladesh was only 10,000 in 2008. But now the figure stood at 3 crore.
So we can predict at very present the number of Facebook user in Bangladesh nearly 30000000. Social

10. Challenges ofSocial Media in Social Life
Social media has changed the way people interacts. In many ways, social media has led to positive
changes in the way people communicate and share information; however, it has a dark side, as well.
Social networking can sometimes result in negative outcomes, some with long-term consequences.
Today, just about everyone is on Facebook. But the social networking site was once a meeting place only
for young adults. Perhaps it’s that history that links social media with youth, even as digital
communication becomes common place. Or it could be the fact that young people spend so much time
online. According to Pew research, almost all teens surveyed in 2015 reported going online every day,
with more than a quarter saying they were online “almost constantly.”
Among adults, three quarters of those polled said they went online daily, and about a fifth reported using
the internet many times a day. First, teens in what is loosely called generation Z are likely using different
platforms than other age groups. Although Facebook still rules in terms of number of users, teens
overwhelmingly prefer newer platforms like Snapchat and Instagram, according to a poll released this
spring. The challenges are being faced by our society everyday only for social media are describing below
in brief.
a. Behavior & Mental Health
The American Academy of Pediatrics has warned about the potential for negative effects of social media
in young kids and teens, including cyber-bullying and "Facebook depression." But the same risks may be
true for adults, across generations. Here's a quick run-down of the studies that have shown that social
media isn't very good for mental well-being, and in some ways,it can be pretty damaging.
Experts have not been in total agreement on whether internet addiction is a real thing, let alone social
media addiction, but there’s some good evidence that both may exist.
The more we use social media, the less happy we seem to be. One study a few years ago found that
Facebook use was linked to both less moment-to-moment happiness and less life satisfaction—the more
people used Facebook in a day, the more these two variables dropped off
It’s no secret that the comparison factor in social media leads to jealousy—most people will admit that
seeing other people’s tropical vacations and perfectly behaved kids is envy-inducing. Studies have
certainly shown that social media use triggers feelings of jealousy.
b. Cyber Bullying
Cyber sexual harassment can range from lewd comments on Facebook and Twitter to uploading a girl's
image on a public forum without her consent, from exhibition of unwanted sexual attention to distribution
of pornographic materials online. The harassers are not always complete strangers, but may also be
friends or acquaintances from off-line social interactions.
A global mobile phone giant Telenor group has found in a new region-wide survey that 49 percent of
school students in Bangladesh have been victims of cyber bullying in a way or the other, revealing that
young people are increasingly becoming vulnerable to such harassment.
According to the Safe Internet Study, conducted by Telenor Group, the students said they are either
“being bullied or disturbed online” or “being bullied by the same person both online and offline” or they
have actually engaged in the act of bullying others online per the anonymity of the internet.
Cyberbullying can range from embarrassing or cruel online posts or digital pictures, to online threats,
harassment, and negative comments, to stalking through emails, websites, social networks and text
messages.
Every age group is vulnerable to cyberbullying, but teenagers and young adults are common victims.
Cyberbullying is a growing problem in schools. Cyberbullying has become an issue because the Internet
is fairly anonymous, which is appealing to bullies because their intimidation is difficult to trace.
Unfortunately, rumors, threats and photos can be disseminated on the Internet very quickly.
In survey analysis about 33.2% user affecting in cybercrime. Although, SNS is new stage of cybercrime.
In Bangladesh, major part of people using Facebook for illegal purpose. Facebook, a social networking
site, has become a major basis for criminals to carry out their operations. These days, many hackers open
up fake accounts on Facebook and spread humiliating pictures and insidious information to other users.
They also steal personal fact, pictures and contact information of other users. Some criminals take
pictures or gather pictures from Facebook of female students and then writing blogs to reveal or distribute
the pornographic content in Facebook to harass them. According to the media, many victims keep quiet to
eliminate embarrassment and a few become mentally imbalanced. Many crimes are taking place by using
social networking sites. Crafting people are setting trap and who are new in this virtual world fall there.
c. Impacts on Education
The most important things in a student’s life are studying, learning good habits and gaining knowledge to
become a person with moral character. But today, as we see in various studies, this optimal learning
process is seriously jeopardized by students becoming entrapped by the ploys of social networking.
Students neglect their studies by spending time on social networking websites rather than studying or
interacting with people in person. Actively and frequently participating in social networking can
negatively affect their grades or hamper their journeys to their future careers.
Getting too involved in social media can lead to an addiction that inculcates bad habits. Students prefer to
chat with friends for hours, and this leads to a waste of time that could have been used for studying,
playing or learning new skills. It is often said that a long-term friendship or relationship is developed
when people meet each other, spend time and share their experiences. But this virtual way of
communicating with each other does not lead to a natural, friendly experience and hence cannot produce a
healthy relationship with those friends. Also, these relationships tend to terminate easily due to a lack of
personal contact. It is not only a picture of Bangladesh, it’s a worldwide concern.
d. Sexually Explicit Contents & Abusing
Facebook has come a long way since its days of connecting college students to those in other dorms.
More than a decade and a billion users later, the social network has become a powerful hub of content,
but with that power comes great responsibility. And those who must bear the brunt of that responsibility
are tasked with the rather onerous duty of evaluating potential cases of revenge pornography and
“sextortion” — more than 50,000 times a month.
Per a leaked document first obtained by The Guardian, the social media platform ultimately disabled more
than 14,000 accounts as a result of sexual abuse, with 33 of the cases involving children. While these may
seem like gargantuan numbers, they could represent just the tip of the iceberg. The Guardian reports that
because abusive content must be reported (and is not proactively sought out), the true extent of abuse on
the platform could be far larger than even Facebook realizes.
The dissemination of pictures of a woman without her consent has become a pervasive form of sexual
harassment. These may be explicit images or videos that were shared with a boyfriend, which are then
circulated once the relationship turns sour, or profile pictures that are taken out of context and put in
different disreputable websites.
When such incidents happen, most girls do not report it to the school authorities or tell their families for
fear that they would be blamed, and their characters questioned. In a country where sex is a taboo topic,
some are too embarrassed to bring up the issue with elders or even their same-age cousins, and are left to
deal with the harassment – or the subsequent trauma caused by it – themselves. They are not aware of the
kinds of dangers they are exposed to online, or of the legal and institutional support that are available to
them.
e. Decreasing Productivity
The unrestricted usage of social media is having a negative impact on workplace productivity, as
employees spend more than 32 per cent of their time on social media every day for personal work, says a
study.
According to Team Lease World of Work Report, an average of 2.35 hours is spent accessing social
media at work every day and 13 per cent of the total productivity is lost owing to the social media
indulgence alone.
As per the study, apart from loss of productivity, the extensive usage of social media by employees has
also resulted in an increase in loss of confidential information, defamation, mis-information and employee
solicitation.
According to the report, Facebook is the most visited social media platform. Out of the 62 per cent
employees who accessed socialmedia during working hours, nearly 83 per cent of them spend significant
time browsing Facebook.
The report noted that the use of social media at workplace and resultant slackening has become very
rampant. Some employers have policies in place, and some are leveraging social media to their benefit,
but most are clueless about how the menace could be handled, it said.
f. Increasing Violence
10th
of November 2017, we witnessed a devastating attack on religious minorities in Horkoli Thakurpara
village in Rangpur. Hindu houses were burned and vandalized by a mob over a facebook post allegedly
demeaning Islam. Accused Titu Roy was supposed to defaming Islam in a facebook post. About 10-12
thousands of people gathered near his village and some of them went and burned the whole village of
hindus. Last year a synchronized was carried out on hindus in Nasirnagar of Brahmanbaria as well as
attack on Ramu’s Buddhist vandalizing around 100 houses and three temples over a facebook post hurting
muslim sentiment. These mayhems are being occurred by religious groups all over the country by edited
or doctored photos which are being shared in facebook and other social media. Sometimes social media
shares rumors, which causes violence and damages on lives and property. It’s a great impact of social
media that it gets the attention of public easily and sometimes they don’t try to find facts and get
tempered.
11. Positive Effects ofSocial Media
With social media booming in this generation, many people have taken notes of the flawed parts of it and
created a bad reputation for social media and its users. Just like anything else, social media has negatives
but it also encompasses many positive attributes that people tend to overlook.
Social networking has changed drastically changed how we communicate. Not too long age, we
communicate others via mail, telephone, telegram, letter. Nowadays we send voice massage, send text,
send audio/video call etc. by using social media. All types of online communication are not most efficient
now, with email being a near to momentary version of the paper letter; webcams using paired with
communication programs such as Skype, iChat or Google Video Chat, make it come to closer by seeing
the person you are speaking with rather than just hear his voice. It has been easier to make friends. So,
one user communicates others user any time anywhere in the world.
a. Communication
Our time is being stretched thinner and thinner by work and family commitments. But social networking
sites offer a chance to communicate in a speedy and efficient manner. Writing an update for Twitter takes
all of 20 seconds, and with cross-posting to other social networks switched on, that update reaches
everyone you want it to reach (and probably more besides) in an instant.
In a survey administered to over 800 college students, questions were asked about their social media
habits. It explored how students saw the role of social media in their personal lives, including how they
read news, practice politics, control privacy, leisure, education and create and maintain relationships.
Judging by their responses, let's explore how social media is an inclusive tool for engagement in daily
life.
As technology grows and expands our range of communication, social media is becoming a vital tool for
daily social interaction. It creates opportunities for people to interact with each other in the way that is
both helpful and essential to socially motivate people. This rapid-fire quick communication style that
captivates millennials and other generations has shifted our conversations from face-to-face instances to
through-the-screen ones.
b. Sharing e-knowledge and Learning
Knowledge discovery, knowledge sharing and collaboration are becoming more important today. With
the growing social technologies like blogs, wiki, micro blogs, Facebook, twitter are being used widely in
our daily life‘s and these technologies are now being used by the teaching community to broadcast and
deliver lectures to the students at large. Some steps in knowledge sharing for students and teachers are;
1) Use knowledge sharing to share and broadcast the information and publish to social networking
websites.
2) Collaborate knowledge mapping and the e-learning system to impart extrinsic knowledge stored as a
Learning Object inside the E-Learning tool to social.
3) Create Groups on social sites using either e-learning tool or using knowledge management system
sites.
4) Design Time table and publish on social networks.
5) Search for any topic of interest related to the course and add it to your social page and publish to the
group with the help of knowledge metadata repository.
A recent report shows that % of e-learning perfective of Bangladesh. The Bar chart shows that years of
2005 to 2016. In 2005 the e-learning probability is only 8%. The revelation of Social Networking Sites
(SNS) started may be in 2006. The increasing of Social Networking Sites that is why the effect on e-
learning tremendously. Many online groups have connected different world users. So, communication is
easy for helping others. In 2016, the e-learning rate increased 85%. It has huge change in Bangladesh.
c. Social Activism
For many, social networks have infamously become outlets for proliferating ill-informed political
opinions and misguided factoids to an audience that mainly already agrees with one's own preformed
ideas. The running history of political engagement on social networks hasn't been great either. Failed
popular movements have been landmarks on Facebook's timeline, and the use of empty gestures to show
support still earns ridicule. This bare-minimum style of advocacy, known derisively as slacktivism, is
alive and well.
But is it possibly giving way to a new era—one where social media, among other Internet resources,is
being galvanized to change public opinion, mobilize activists, and even shape public policy? To see how
this change has played out, we need to look at the recent past. Six years ago, a series of popular
movements across the world spelled hope for Facebook and Twitter as instruments of social change.
One of them in Bangladesh, the Shahbagh Ganajagaran Mancha- a youth online activist movement started
by Bangladesh Online Activist Network BOA gathered the whole nation under one umbrella.
Justice For Tonu: Social media users once again came together after Sohagi Jahan Tonu, a second year
student of History Department of Comilla Victoria College was found dead in a bush beside a culvert
inside Comilla cantonment on March 20, 2016. The first autopsy report revealed she was not raped,
however, subsequently; the body was exhumed again and sent for fresh autopsy. This mysterious death
has given rise to wide spread criticism, and questions in social media by the netizens.
Attack on Khadiza in MC College, Sylhet, Nasirnagar Atrocities and Gaibandha attack on minorities,
Rampal movement etc were raised in social media by youths and all section of people. Nowadays social
media thus playing a great role in political issues.
d. News & views sharing
Social media is a hub if global communications; so it doesn’t come as a surprise that it has an increasing
influence on the news. Most of the digital media news deals with how brands interact with customers or
breaking news updates. Social media users need information; and they need information NOW.
According to a PEW analysis on comScore data it was found that people who visit a news website
directly spend three times as long on those websites as visitors who visit these sites through search or
Facebook.
In recent,ING performed a study on the influence of social media on news professionals like journalists
and PR professionals. Their findings tell a lot about how influential such resources are on reshaping news
– 50% of journalists in the study perceive social media as a main source of information regardless
whether it is reliable, 63% of journalists use social media as a means to communicate with major
stakeholders and 56% of journalists say that they cannot work without social media. If we see the present
situation in Bangladesh all the prominent printing and electronic media have their own pages, fan pages
and supporter’s group. Even the Radio channels are also coming in social media like facebook and
broadcasting their live programs as Television channels do. Social media has become the primary source
of news and views for youths, not only in entertainment sector but also educative and informative too.
e. Improving Education Facility
With the creation of Social Networking Sites, colleges and universities across the globe have been playing
catch-up with students. This new technology carries much weight as a new medium for students to build
social connections and grow as members of their institutions
In a recent research in Bangladesh private university results indicated that social networking sites had
severalimpacts on the lifestyle of students and teachers with the positive effects outweighing the negative
effects. The findings confirmed that students can formulate group discussions so as to exchange their
ideas, communicate to their teachers and appealto their friends about assignments. Teachers share course
related materials with their students, enables research work, creates student groups to collaborate on
projects and communicate with their fellow teachers from other universities.
Ayman Sadiq, a Bangladeshi educator who founded the 10 Minute School, a free online education
platform and an organization with which he has produced over 2,000 video lessons teaching a wide
spectrum of academic subjects, mainly focusing on English, mathematics, science and skill development
using social media like facebook and youtube. Teachers.gov.bd is a government initiative while
Teachingbd24.com, Lekha Pora BD,Amar Pathshala,Bangla Books PDF,Dainikshiksha etc online
education sites and pages helping to spread best educational facilities to every corner of the country.
f. Social Media Based Business
Social media marketing is rapidly growing as one of the most important parts of marketing strategy.
Marketers from around the globe are realizing the impact of Social Media. Businesses & Organizations
are discovering the ways social media is contributing to their success and growth. Moreover, it is
contributing in all areas of their company.
The importance of Social Media Marketing can no longer be ignored if you want to stay in the
competition. If you’re still wondering why it is important to your business, look no further. We’ve
outlined the following facts.
1. 80% of internet users prefer to get online discount and coupons
2. 43% of all online customers are social media fans and followers
3. 20% of Facebook users have been influenced to purchase by seeing ads
A proper social media strategy greatly increases your brand recognition since you’re engaging with a
broad audience of consumers. Without social media, your inbound traffic is limited to your usual
customers. Social Media Marketing helps you to reach more audience outside of your loyal customer
circle. Social media plays a large part of any content marketing distribution plan. So, there are
opportunities put more effort to create contents that align with your brand and generate more interests for
your audience. Through Social Media Platforms, you make your customers happier than before. And,
these happy customers mention your business on social media that show new visitors your value and
brand authority.
g. A Discrimination Free Cyber World
The right to freedom from discrimination is internationally recognized as a human right and enshrines the
principle of egalitarianism. But from Indian subcontinent to America, Europe to Africa, from the Latin
world to Australia there are discrimination on races, sex genders, ages or religions and caste. A world free
from all kinds of discrimination is a dream for all social activist in the world. But till now it is only a
dream in the realistic world except the virtual social media. Discrimination occurs when a person is
treated less favorably than another person because of a particular attribute they have. Harassment or
bullying can amount to discrimination in some circumstances. Although, Social media postings can be
against the law if they discriminate against, harass, bully or racially vilify a person but the media gives all
the inhabitants of the earth to have the same cyber space as others. Social media doesn’t do and support
any kinds of discrimination and aim to have same rights to all.
12. Some Recommendations
The mass media is considered to be one of many factors that influence the population. Sociologists
believe that the media has the power to dictate how we learn about what is going on in the world, as well
as how to appropriately interact with one another. Many researchers have started to conduct studies to
determine exactly how children interpret media messages and incorporate them into their daily lives and
peer groups. All of us must heard the word ‘socialization’. Socialization can be defined as the type of
social learning that occurs when a person interacts with other individuals. While some believe that this
process is limited to the childhood years, others argue that socialization is a continuous process that
stretches over a person's lifetime. In the world of web and social media do have enough socialization on
social media? The most amazing thing is that when we even don’t know what to do and what not to do in
social media, we get a smartphone with internet connections. In the social media era, we are the first
generation who are getting these facilities from childhood. But we are not taught enough about these
means and nowadays most of the youths are abusing this.
The ICT Division of Bangladesh government organized a program titled 'Social Media Parade:Step Up
for Good' at the Software Technology Park in Dhaka's Karwan Bazar with the slogan 'Let's Make Internet
Safer and Better for All' on 17th
October 2017. There all the panel member emphasized on the ethical use
of social media for the betterment as well as the govt. authority like BTRC and concerned ministry should
be aware about these.
Facebook and Twitter should be more aggressive in tackling extremism and political misinformation
because Extremist can use social media for their own purposes. Militant groups such as ISIS, al-Qaeda
and the Taliban are increasingly using social media to raise funds, recruit and radicalize persons, and it
has become increasingly effective. So we all should be aware of that along with the responsible authority.
13. Conclusion
Social media has revolutionized the way we think, perceive, decide and act. Had the revolution brought
positive changes, there could have been fewer complications in the way we judge social media.
Unfortunately, the revolution in communication and interaction among humans brought on by social
media has also brought negative consequences. But if we, the users of social media want, we can make a
happier and friendly cyber environment in social media. To be fair and honest we need to mention that
social media has its positive outcomes and has its drawbacks as well. As it have been relived in this
article at the end it is our choice to either use social media in a positive way and benefit from it in your
social and academic life, or fall as victim of social media's negative impacts.

Now Bangladesh is one of the technological hub in the world. Bangladesh government’s project titled ‘Vision 2021’ and ‘Digital Bangladesh’ made the countries position higher in technological aspects. It’s a small country in geographical land area, but has a huge population. Considering the demography of Bangladesh youth represents roughly one third of the country. A huge intrusion of Internet in the country is also enhancing development. Report by Broadband Commission, a conjunction of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and UNESCO titled ‘State of Broadband 2016’ shows that in mobile broadband usage Bangladesh’s position is 137th where 13.2% of total population have access to internet. In recent budget discussion Finance minister MA Muhit said that 41.51% people use internet in Bangladesh as a report of BTRC. Most of the users of internet use only social media, facebook and they are youth. • 2. 4. Objective ofthe Study The objective of this study is to know the effects and impacts of social media in young generation in Bangladesh focusing on the positive and negative points specially. 5. Sources ofData This paper is based on the secondary sources. Data has been collected from books, journals, research papers and reports, internet, magazine, newspaper’s reports and websites as well as social media. Data has been analyzed in qualitative way. 6. Concept ofMedia Media is the collective communication outlets or tools that are used to store and deliver information or data. It is either associated with communication media, or the specialized mass media communication businesses such as print media and the press, photography, advertising, cinema, broadcasting (radio and television) and publishing. The word media is defined as "one of the means or channels of general communication in society, as newspapers, radio, television etc. The beginning of human communication through designed channels, i.e. not vocalization or gestures, dates back to ancient cave paintings, drawn maps, and writing. The concept of media is one that is used to refer to all media in which an idea or message can be transmitted. Today, however, the concept is commonly related with certain media, more specifically with newspapers or newspapers, television, radio, internet, graphic publications. Media are the channel that marketers and advertisers used to convey a message to your market goal, therefore, the choice of the means to be used in an advertising campaign is a decision of the utmost importance because it has a direct impact on the results that are obtained with it. Therefore, both marketers and advertisers need to know what are the different types of media, what are and what are their advantages and disadvantages, with the aim that can make the best decisions when selecting the media to be used. 7. Concept ofSocial Media The variety of evolving stand-alone and built-in social media services introduces a challenge of definition. The idea that social media are defined by their ability to bring people together has been seen as too broad a definition, as this would suggest that the telegraph and telephone were also social media – not the technologies scholars are intending to describe. The terminology is unclear, with some referring to social media as social networks. A 2015 paper reviewed the prominent literature in the area and identified four commonalities unique to then-current social media services:
  • 3. 1. social media are Web 2.0 Internet-based applications, 2. user-generated content (UGC) is the lifeblood of the social media organism, 3. users create service-specific profiles for the site or app that are designed and maintained by the social media organization, 4. social media facilitate the development of online social networks by connecting a user's profile with those of other individuals or groups. In 2016, Merriam-Webster defined social media as "Forms of electronic communication (such as Web sites) through which people create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, etc. The term social media is usually used to describe social networking sites such as: a. Facebook – an online social networking site that allows users to create their personal profiles, share photos and videos, and communicate with other users b. Twitter – an internet service that allows users to post "tweets" for their followers to see updates in real-time c. LinkedIn – a networking website for the business community that allows users to create professional profiles, post resumes, and communicate with other professionals and job-seekers. d. Pinterest – an online community that allows users to display photos of items found on the web by "pinning" them and sharing ideas with others. e. Snapchat – an app for mobile devices that allows users to send and share photos of themselves doing their daily activities. Social media technologies take many different forms including blogs, business networks, enterprise social networks, forums, microblogs, photo sharing, products/services review, social bookmarking, social gaming, social networks, video sharing, and virtual worlds. The development of social media started off with simple platforms such as sixdegrees.com. Unlike instant messaging clients such as ICQ and AOL's AIM, or chat clients like IRC,iChat or Chat Television, sixdegrees.com was the first online business that was created for realpeople, using their real names. However, the first social networks were short-lived because their users lost interest. The Social Network Revolution has led to the rise of the networking sites. Research shows that the audience spends 22 percent of their time on social networking sites, thus proving how popular social media platforms have become. This increase is because of the smart phones that are now in the daily lives of most humans. 8. Evolution ofSocial Media Today, everyone knows and uses social media. Even the most remote parts of the world have heard about Facebook and Twitter, and they probably use it every day too. However,it wasn’t like this a decade ago. Not as many people had internet access at that time, and smartphones were not even introduced in the market. Today, most of us can’t live without social media. In fact,we scroll through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Pinterest at least thrice every hour. Most people define social media as the ability to use the internet to share and connect with others almost instantly. If we go by this definition, social media can be traced back to one website alone – no, it’s not
  • 4. Facebook. The first social media site was a website called ‘Six Degrees’ that was launched in 1997. It allowed its users to create a profile and then befriend other users. From Six Degrees, the internet emerged into the era of instant messaging and blogging. As the millennium changed, almost 100 million people had access to the internet. At that time, however, social media was looked upon as an unusual hobby. Nevertheless, people all across the world began to use chat rooms to make new friends, to date, and to discuss topics with other like-minded people. However, the huge boom of social media was yet to come. LinkedIn was yet another website that was one of the very first social media websites. A lot of social networking sites we have today are inspired from and are similar to LinkedIn. Even back in 2002, when LinkedIn was founded, it was aimed towards professionals who wanted to network with one another, and functions the way even today. In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook, which went on to become a social media giant. Even after all these years,Facebook is the number one social networking site there is, boasting over two billion users. In 2006, the popularity of SMS and text messaging inspired Jack Dorsey,Biz Stone, Noah Glass, and Evan Williams to create Twitter. Today, Twitter has a staggering 500 million user-base,a number that is growing even as you read this article. Before long, severalother websites came into being. Instagram was launched in 2010 for iOS users and in 2012 for Android users. Today, it is one of the top-most social media sites for photo sharing. At the close of the 2000s, social media was not only widely used, but it also became widespread in business. Today, almost all brands are present on social media, and it is unusual when you come across a business that doesn’t have a strong social media presence. As of 2017, there are thousands of social media platforms. Some platforms are more popular than others but each platform has a loyal audience, no matter however small. For example, Instagram caters to an audience that communicates through photographs while Twitter is perfect for those who like to keep their communication to the point. With innovative and exciting technology just around the corner, the further evolution of social media will be interesting to witness. 9. Statistics Related to Social Media According to the article "The Emerging Role of Social Media in Political and Regime Change" by Rita Safranek, the Middle East and North Africa region has one of the most youthful populations in the world, with people under 25 making up between 35–45% of the population in each country. They make up the majority of social media users, including about 17 million Facebook users,25,000 Twitter accounts and 40,000 active blogs, according to the Arab Advisors Group. Before reviewing Bangladesh perspective we now showing some statistical information about social media around the world. a. Users Related Data This is a list of the leading social networks based on number of active user accounts as of August 2017.

  • 6. According to ITU Bangladesh has 617300 internet users till July, 2010. Facebook user rate is higher than the internet user rate in Bangladesh. The total facebook user in Bangladesh is 1,020,560, which is 165% higher than the internet user. That means every internet connection has 1.6 facebook user. • 8. Fig 3: Internet & social site user in Bangladesh This report is one of the recent,in April 2017 which shows the actualsituation of social media usage among youths of Bangladesh. 10. Challenges ofSocial Media in Social Life Social media has changed the way people interacts. In many ways, social media has led to positive changes in the way people communicate and share information; however, it has a dark side, as well. Social networking can sometimes result in negative outcomes, some with long-term consequences. Today, just about everyone is on Facebook. But the social networking site was once a meeting place only for young adults. Perhaps it’s that history that links social media with youth, even as digital communication becomes common place. Or it could be the fact that young people spend so much time online. According to Pew research, almost all teens surveyed in 2015 reported going online every day, with more than a quarter saying they were online “almost constantly.” Among adults, three quarters of those polled said they went online daily, and about a fifth reported using the internet many times a day. First, teens in what is loosely called generation Z are likely using different platforms than other age groups. Although Facebook still rules in terms of number of users, teens overwhelmingly prefer newer platforms like Snapchat and Instagram, according to a poll released this spring. The challenges are being faced by our society everyday only for social media are describing below in brief.
  • 9. a. Behavior & Mental Health The American Academy of Pediatrics has warned about the potential for negative effects of social media in young kids and teens, including cyber-bullying and "Facebook depression." But the same risks may be true for adults, across generations. Here's a quick run-down of the studies that have shown that social media isn't very good for mental well-being, and in some ways,it can be pretty damaging. Experts have not been in total agreement on whether internet addiction is a real thing, let alone social media addiction, but there’s some good evidence that both may exist. The more we use social media, the less happy we seem to be. One study a few years ago found that Facebook use was linked to both less moment-to-moment happiness and less life satisfaction—the more people used Facebook in a day, the more these two variables dropped off It’s no secret that the comparison factor in social media leads to jealousy—most people will admit that seeing other people’s tropical vacations and perfectly behaved kids is envy-inducing. Studies have certainly shown that social media use triggers feelings of jealousy. b. Cyber Bullying Cyber sexual harassment can range from lewd comments on Facebook and Twitter to uploading a girl's image on a public forum without her consent, from exhibition of unwanted sexual attention to distribution of pornographic materials online. The harassers are not always complete strangers, but may also be friends or acquaintances from off-line social interactions. A global mobile phone giant Telenor group has found in a new region-wide survey that 49 percent of school students in Bangladesh have been victims of cyber bullying in a way or the other, revealing that young people are increasingly becoming vulnerable to such harassment. According to the Safe Internet Study, conducted by Telenor Group, the students said they are either “being bullied or disturbed online” or “being bullied by the same person both online and offline” or they have actually engaged in the act of bullying others online per the anonymity of the internet. Cyberbullying can range from embarrassing or cruel online posts or digital pictures, to online threats, harassment, and negative comments, to stalking through emails, websites, social networks and text messages. Every age group is vulnerable to cyberbullying, but teenagers and young adults are common victims. Cyberbullying is a growing problem in schools. Cyberbullying has become an issue because the Internet is fairly anonymous, which is appealing to bullies because their intimidation is difficult to trace. Unfortunately, rumors, threats and photos can be disseminated on the Internet very quickly. In survey analysis about 33.2% user affecting in cybercrime. Although, SNS is new stage of cybercrime. In Bangladesh, major part of people using Facebook for illegal purpose. Facebook, a social networking site, has become a major basis for criminals to carry out their operations. These days, many hackers open up fake accounts on Facebook and spread humiliating pictures and insidious information to other users. They also steal personal fact, pictures and contact information of other users. Some criminals take pictures or gather pictures from Facebook of female students and then writing blogs to reveal or distribute the pornographic content in Facebook to harass them. According to the media, many victims keep quiet to eliminate embarrassment and a few become mentally imbalanced. Many crimes are taking place by using social networking sites. Crafting people are setting trap and who are new in this virtual world fall there.
  • 10. c. Impacts on Education The most important things in a student’s life are studying, learning good habits and gaining knowledge to become a person with moral character. But today, as we see in various studies, this optimal learning process is seriously jeopardized by students becoming entrapped by the ploys of social networking. Students neglect their studies by spending time on social networking websites rather than studying or interacting with people in person. Actively and frequently participating in social networking can negatively affect their grades or hamper their journeys to their future careers. Getting too involved in social media can lead to an addiction that inculcates bad habits. Students prefer to chat with friends for hours, and this leads to a waste of time that could have been used for studying, playing or learning new skills. It is often said that a long-term friendship or relationship is developed when people meet each other, spend time and share their experiences. But this virtual way of communicating with each other does not lead to a natural, friendly experience and hence cannot produce a healthy relationship with those friends. Also, these relationships tend to terminate easily due to a lack of personal contact. It is not only a picture of Bangladesh, it’s a worldwide concern. d. Sexually Explicit Contents & Abusing Facebook has come a long way since its days of connecting college students to those in other dorms. More than a decade and a billion users later, the social network has become a powerful hub of content, but with that power comes great responsibility. And those who must bear the brunt of that responsibility are tasked with the rather onerous duty of evaluating potential cases of revenge pornography and “sextortion” — more than 50,000 times a month. Per a leaked document first obtained by The Guardian, the social media platform ultimately disabled more than 14,000 accounts as a result of sexual abuse, with 33 of the cases involving children. While these may seem like gargantuan numbers, they could represent just the tip of the iceberg. The Guardian reports that because abusive content must be reported (and is not proactively sought out), the true extent of abuse on the platform could be far larger than even Facebook realizes. The dissemination of pictures of a woman without her consent has become a pervasive form of sexual harassment. These may be explicit images or videos that were shared with a boyfriend, which are then circulated once the relationship turns sour, or profile pictures that are taken out of context and put in different disreputable websites. When such incidents happen, most girls do not report it to the school authorities or tell their families for fear that they would be blamed, and their characters questioned. In a country where sex is a taboo topic, some are too embarrassed to bring up the issue with elders or even their same-age cousins, and are left to deal with the harassment – or the subsequent trauma caused by it – themselves. They are not aware of the kinds of dangers they are exposed to online, or of the legal and institutional support that are available to them. e. Decreasing Productivity
  • 11. The unrestricted usage of social media is having a negative impact on workplace productivity, as employees spend more than 32 per cent of their time on social media every day for personal work, says a study. According to Team Lease World of Work Report, an average of 2.35 hours is spent accessing social media at work every day and 13 per cent of the total productivity is lost owing to the social media indulgence alone. As per the study, apart from loss of productivity, the extensive usage of social media by employees has also resulted in an increase in loss of confidential information, defamation, mis-information and employee solicitation. According to the report, Facebook is the most visited social media platform. Out of the 62 per cent employees who accessed socialmedia during working hours, nearly 83 per cent of them spend significant time browsing Facebook. The report noted that the use of social media at workplace and resultant slackening has become very rampant. Some employers have policies in place, and some are leveraging social media to their benefit, but most are clueless about how the menace could be handled, it said. f. Increasing Violence 10th of November 2017, we witnessed a devastating attack on religious minorities in Horkoli Thakurpara village in Rangpur. Hindu houses were burned and vandalized by a mob over a facebook post allegedly demeaning Islam. Accused Titu Roy was supposed to defaming Islam in a facebook post. About 10-12 thousands of people gathered near his village and some of them went and burned the whole village of hindus. Last year a synchronized was carried out on hindus in Nasirnagar of Brahmanbaria as well as attack on Ramu’s Buddhist vandalizing around 100 houses and three temples over a facebook post hurting muslim sentiment. These mayhems are being occurred by religious groups all over the country by edited or doctored photos which are being shared in facebook and other social media. Sometimes social media shares rumors, which causes violence and damages on lives and property. It’s a great impact of social media that it gets the attention of public easily and sometimes they don’t try to find facts and get tempered. 11. Positive Effects ofSocial Media With social media booming in this generation, many people have taken notes of the flawed parts of it and created a bad reputation for social media and its users. Just like anything else, social media has negatives but it also encompasses many positive attributes that people tend to overlook. Social networking has changed drastically changed how we communicate. Not too long age, we communicate others via mail, telephone, telegram, letter. Nowadays we send voice massage, send text, send audio/video call etc. by using social media. All types of online communication are not most efficient now, with email being a near to momentary version of the paper letter; webcams using paired with communication programs such as Skype, iChat or Google Video Chat, make it come to closer by seeing the person you are speaking with rather than just hear his voice. It has been easier to make friends. So, one user communicates others user any time anywhere in the world.
  • 12. a. Communication Our time is being stretched thinner and thinner by work and family commitments. But social networking sites offer a chance to communicate in a speedy and efficient manner. Writing an update for Twitter takes all of 20 seconds, and with cross-posting to other social networks switched on, that update reaches everyone you want it to reach (and probably more besides) in an instant. In a survey administered to over 800 college students, questions were asked about their social media habits. It explored how students saw the role of social media in their personal lives, including how they read news, practice politics, control privacy, leisure, education and create and maintain relationships. Judging by their responses, let's explore how social media is an inclusive tool for engagement in daily life. As technology grows and expands our range of communication, social media is becoming a vital tool for daily social interaction. It creates opportunities for people to interact with each other in the way that is both helpful and essential to socially motivate people. This rapid-fire quick communication style that captivates millennials and other generations has shifted our conversations from face-to-face instances to through-the-screen ones. b. Sharing e-knowledge and Learning Knowledge discovery, knowledge sharing and collaboration are becoming more important today. With the growing social technologies like blogs, wiki, micro blogs, Facebook, twitter are being used widely in our daily life‘s and these technologies are now being used by the teaching community to broadcast and deliver lectures to the students at large. Some steps in knowledge sharing for students and teachers are; 1) Use knowledge sharing to share and broadcast the information and publish to social networking websites. 2) Collaborate knowledge mapping and the e-learning system to impart extrinsic knowledge stored as a Learning Object inside the E-Learning tool to social. 3) Create Groups on social sites using either e-learning tool or using knowledge management system sites. 4) Design Time table and publish on social networks. 5) Search for any topic of interest related to the course and add it to your social page and publish to the group with the help of knowledge metadata repository. A recent report shows that % of e-learning perfective of Bangladesh. The Bar chart shows that years of 2005 to 2016. In 2005 the e-learning probability is only 8%. The revelation of Social Networking Sites (SNS) started may be in 2006. The increasing of Social Networking Sites that is why the effect on e- learning tremendously. Many online groups have connected different world users. So, communication is easy for helping others. In 2016, the e-learning rate increased 85%. It has huge change in Bangladesh.
  • 13. c. Social Activism For many, social networks have infamously become outlets for proliferating ill-informed political opinions and misguided factoids to an audience that mainly already agrees with one's own preformed ideas. The running history of political engagement on social networks hasn't been great either. Failed popular movements have been landmarks on Facebook's timeline, and the use of empty gestures to show support still earns ridicule. This bare-minimum style of advocacy, known derisively as slacktivism, is alive and well. But is it possibly giving way to a new era—one where social media, among other Internet resources,is being galvanized to change public opinion, mobilize activists, and even shape public policy? To see how this change has played out, we need to look at the recent past. Six years ago, a series of popular movements across the world spelled hope for Facebook and Twitter as instruments of social change. One of them in Bangladesh, the Shahbagh Ganajagaran Mancha- a youth online activist movement started by Bangladesh Online Activist Network BOA gathered the whole nation under one umbrella. Justice For Tonu: Social media users once again came together after Sohagi Jahan Tonu, a second year student of History Department of Comilla Victoria College was found dead in a bush beside a culvert inside Comilla cantonment on March 20, 2016. The first autopsy report revealed she was not raped, however, subsequently; the body was exhumed again and sent for fresh autopsy. This mysterious death has given rise to wide spread criticism, and questions in social media by the netizens. Attack on Khadiza in MC College, Sylhet, Nasirnagar Atrocities and Gaibandha attack on minorities, Rampal movement etc were raised in social media by youths and all section of people. Nowadays social media thus playing a great role in political issues. d. Some Recommendations The mass media is considered to be one of many factors that influence the population. Sociologists believe that the media has the power to dictate how we learn about what is going on in the world, as well as how to appropriately interact with one another. Many researchers have started to conduct studies to determine exactly how children interpret media messages and incorporate them into their daily lives and peer groups. All of us must heard the word ‘socialization’. Socialization can be defined as the type of social learning that occurs when a person interacts with other individuals. While some believe that this process is limited to the childhood years, others argue that socialization is a continuous process that stretches over a person's lifetime. In the world of web and social media do have enough socialization on social media? The most amazing thing is that when we even don’t know what to do and what not to do in social media, we get a smartphone with internet connections. In the social media era, we are the first generation who are getting these facilities from childhood. But we are not taught enough about these means and nowadays most of the youths are abusing this. The ICT Division of Bangladesh government organized a program titled 'Social Media Parade:Step Up for Good' at the Software Technology Park in Dhaka's Karwan Bazar with the slogan 'Let's Make Internet Safer and Better for All' on 17th October 2017. There all the panel member emphasized on the ethical use of social media for the betterment as well as the govt. authority like BTRC and concerned ministry should be aware about these. Facebook and Twitter should be more aggressive in tackling extremism and political misinformation because Extremist can use social media for their own purposes. Militant groups such as ISIS, al-Qaeda and the Taliban are increasingly using social media to raise funds, recruit and radicalize persons, and it has become increasingly effective. So we all should be aware of that along with the responsible authority. 13. Conclusion
