President Obama’s election campaign success was assisted by a massive Social Media campaign
Obama had a conversation with the world, speaking directly to them, and listening back, in realtime.
If a rival challenged or attacked Obama, he put it to his followers and they responded with answers on his behalf.
Social Media is all about people having conversations online, creating photos, blogs, chat sites, micro-blogs, social networks, video sharing, RSS feeds and podcasts to discuss and comment on just about….Everything!
Tools like Search Engines have made finding the exact product or service for your requirements very easy.
In the future, there will be less careers and more outsourcing of staff and services.
As a Business Owner, you will employ the specialist services of other Business Owners as and when you need them.
You yourself will be a Supplier or Service Provider to many clients, like bees pollinating flowers.
In order to establish your place in this new world, you have to fulfil a Micro-niche.
Your products or services have to be very specific, in order to attract the exact clients you are looking for, and not get lost in the sea of other providers.
Make sure you have the perfect 10 second pitch for your Micro-niche.
You shouldn’t be doing 3 or 4 different things.
Concentrate on one specific offering and create a tribe to lead.
Get Web-famous!
Use YouTube, Blogger, Twitter, Facebook and all the other tools to create your own TV Channels, Blogs, Newspaper, Podcasts etc.
By creating followers, you create a potential market.
When you have a market, the £ will find you.
Basic Marketing Strategy
Your customers are now your marketing team
They have Twitter, Facebook followers that you can tap into
Social Media + Online Affiliate Marketing = The Perfect Storm
People Discussing, Commenting and Recommending the products that matter to them.
Rewarding customers who bring you new business
Unbound customers and a limitless marketing budget (allowable cost/lead)
Dynamic real time measurement tools that identify who is influencing and what is working
Example – contributing to a forum like DigitalSpy
People who work in technology based shops and businesses can build huge credibility using their industry knowledge and expertise to assist others
They display the fact that they are affiliated to the related business in their signature, but do not promote the business in their posts
They offer impartial advice based on their experience
Other forum users begin to trust and even seek the opinions of the expert
By gaining the trust and respect of the other forum users, the expert will enjoy more business
Aim to be only one type of voice – otherwise confusing for your followers
Top Gear have clear distinctions between funny story, expert test drive, latest car released etc.
Use Playstation as example, inc. Playstation Slim
Creating product awareness, hype – people queuing at the door
Giving customers confidence in your product and the support. Quote other customers experiences
Defend market share. Differentiation from any new competition. Compatibility with products that align themselves with yours
Maintain margins and avoid discounts as much as possible. Use new features and reinvention to keep prices high and harvest
People fear going into a sales situation without being in control
Use blogs, slideshare etc to give them all the info they need before buying from you.
Give your affilates the tools to promote you : Tools and copy text, transparency so they can see real time results, updates, relationship
Cycles can be bridged – Use this to your advantageConsider creating two brochures – one for you as relatable, one for your product as reliable
Never launch a product and go straight for Best Buy!
Michelle Phan - http://www.youtube.com/user/michellephan
Teenager who started out creating makeup videos illustrating how to achieve the look of the stars – ie Lady Gaga. Gained massive following through social networking. Blogs and videos started to influence skin care and makeup markets.
Soon gained the interest of major beauty product manufacturers, massive sponsorship deals. Now has her own range of products and is a professional makeup artist and spokesperson for Lancome.
Dave witnessed United Airlines breaking his $3500 guitar from the plane window. Despite complaints to the Flight Attendant, Baggage Handlers and Management at the airline, United denied responsibility and refused to reimburse Dave for the value of the guitar.
After 9 months, Dave finally gave up chasing the claim, and vowed instead to write 3 songs, release them freely on YouTube, and ask people to vote for their favourite.
Launched 6th July 2009, the first video amassed 150,000 views within one day, prompting United to contact Carroll to right the wrong, although unsuccessfully. 500,000 hits by July and 5 million by mid-August 2009. It currently has over 8 million.
United Airlines stock fell 10% within 4 days of launch, wiping out $180 million in value.
