We STEEL believe
«We STEEL belie-
Buona Made in Steel 2015!
Emanuele Morandi
We STEEL believe
A provocative and challenging title, yet a strong affirmation, without a doubt. “We STEEL believe”, this is
the motto that has accompanied this sixth edition of Made in Steel. We have chosen this play on words to
describe how steel was, still is and will continue to be the material through which we will build our future
and the future of our children.
We assert this out loud through «Industria e Acciaio 2030» (Industry & Steel 2030): a visionary project that re-
presents the soul of the conference program at Made in Steel and, as the title indicates, the objectives and
the time frame of the research that we set ourselves to carry out. We will present the results of our year-long
project during these three days, guaranteeing all participants a complete immersion into the future. Our
conviction is that the sustainable development of our economies can be realized only through a vision over
a long period of time (that is why we set our time frame to the year 2030). Furthermore, we believe that the
manufacturing and the steel industries are still central, even though we are fully aware of the passage from
an economy based on traditional mass production to one driven by ideas and by new digital technologies
that will reconfigure consumer behavior and business models of all companies. A transformation in which
steel will, however, continue to perform a supporting and irreplaceable role.
We STEEL believe, and if you are here, you do too.
Wishing you a successful Made in Steel 2015.

Business, seminars and Expo. These are the three pil-
lars that form the foundation of the 6th edition of
Made in Steel, the main conference & exhibition in
Southern Europe dedicated to the steel industry.
The 2015 edition of Made in Steel will be hosted for
the first time in its history in the prestigious halls of the
fieramilano Exhibition Centre in Milan, Italy, after four
editions held in Brescia and the last in 2013 at fiera-
milanocity. Transferring the event to fieramilano and
postponing it by a month with respect to its tradi-
tional date were two actions that the board of the
exhibition took with the aim of offering exhibitors and
visitors alike with an incredible opportunity. In fact,
just 500 meters away from the halls of the exhibition,
and connected by a pedestrian walkway, is the Uni-
versal Exhibition Expo 2015, which began on 1st
May
and which, during its 6 month duration, will be visited
by an estimated 20 million people. With this in mind,
Made in Steel intended on giving its community an
opportunity to be part of an unrepeatable global
arena. For business, Made in Steel offers almost 30
thousand square meters of exhibition area which
hosts leading national and international players in
the industry from various sectors of steel production,
transformation, distribution and final users, plus coun-
tless qualified buyers allowing many small, medium
and large enterprises to improve their presence on
the global market place. A precious outlook into the
future is the highlight of the conference program
where the results of a year-long research study titled
«Industria e Acciaio 2030» will be presented.
«Industria e Acciaio 2030» was created by Siderweb,
the main Italian organ for information and networ-
king specialized in the iron and steel industry and or-
ganizer of Made in Steel. The study, which is focused
on the future of steel in terms of product innovation,
process, sustainability and distribution systems pre-
sented on the 20th May. The project was conducted
with the contribution of companies operating in the
sector and also with the collaboration of almost 80
associations linked to steel and its uses.
Many of the main organs representing the various
categories of the industrial chain have chosen Made
in Steel as their privileged location to hold their an-
nual meetings, offering even further and important
opportunities. The following international and Italian
trade associations of the sector have granted their
patronage to Made in Steel: Aim, Aisem, Ance Bre-
scia, Animp, ANFIA, Assofermet, Assofond, Assogri-
gliati, Centro Inox, Cicof, Dismet, Eacssc, Eurometal,
Federacciai, Jernkontoret, Fondazione Promozione
Acciaio, ISSF, Nat.Fed, STSG, UCC, Upiveb. The “Main
Supporter” of the 2015 edition of Made in Steel is UBI
Banca, the fourth largest banking group in Italy for
stock market capitalization. The “Gold Sponsor” is
Coface, one of the world leading credit insurance
companies with cover provided in approximately
200 countries.

Business, approfondimento ed Expo. Questi i tre pila-
A circa 500 me-
In quest’ottica, Made in
sede privilegiata per i propri eventi annuali Made in
ne e internazionali: Aim, Aisem, Ance Brescia, Animp,
ANFIA, Assofermet, Assofond, Assogrigliati, Centro
Inox, Cicof, Dismet, Eacssc, Eurometal, Federacciai,
Jernkontoret, Fondazione Promozione Acciaio, ISSF,
Nat.Fed, STSG, UCC, Upiveb. A supportare in qualità
and exhibiton, invece, è Coface, tra i leader mon-
diali dell’assicurazione del credito.

Siderweb - The future in steel
prices and information. Now much more.
Conceived on 11th October 2001, Siderweb “the Iron
& Steel Portal” was launched on the market to the
national steel industry and its stakeholders as a real
precursor of the future. It did it by setting its sights on
the web, when communication via fax still carried
considerable weight. It did it by contributing to sup-
ply the steel market with transparency by inserting
the first, and still today, only privately owned iron
and steel product price survey in Italy. By analyzing
the financial results of the companies in the sector,
grouped together in clusters according to their activi-
ties, it was also able to graph out a unique and com-
plete analysis of the condition of the sector and of its
specific productive categories. Fourteen years down
the track, Siderweb has opened another window to
the future. With a paradigm that has been greatly
modified by globalization, but also by the world cri-
sis which heavily struck the iron and steel industry, Si-
derweb has confirmed its traditional services and has
also added new and innovative ones to its portfolio.
With its usual eye on the future, Siderweb has given
itself its first profound makeover by evolving from “the
Iron and Steel Portal” to the “Steel Community”. It did
it by confirming its informative specificity, but this time
with a new type of communication that has become
circular, social and tailor made.
The responsive platform of the new graphic structu-
re guarantees maximum fruition to the user who is
always on the go. Also, each member can now cre-
ate his/her own platform, designing it to suit his/her
own informative needs through the innovative service
My Siderweb. Thanks to its very own internal research
center, Siderweb is able to supply specific expert ad-
vice on the iron and steel market of a financial and
strategic nature. The iron and steel product price sur-
vey, whose method is certified by the Laboratory of
Statistics, Data, Methods and Systems of the University
of Brescia, is still an innovative and highly apprecia-
ted offer, but is now ready to present some important
improvements in the survey of twenty six products. This
service is aiming even higher by increasing its usual
fortnightly frequency to a weekly rate, with the invol-
vement of a more numerous panel of players and with
an even more complete and varied range of product
sectors. Last February 11th
2014, Siderweb purchased
100% of Made in Steel, the main conference and
exhibition in Southern Europe dedicated to the ste-
el industry. An operation which confirmed with even
greater conviction the extraordinary capacity of the
Siderweb to stage events of high standard even on
an international landscape. This new version will put
at the disposal of all subscribers of Siderweb and non
support in the organization and promotion of events,
offering support in communication, stand positioning
and reinforcement of their trademark or products.
With its in-depth knowledge of the iron and steel sec-
tor, Siderweb is able to help companies of the sector
with incomparable sensitivity and precision.
A testimony of this is the ambitious project «Industria
e Acciaio 2030» (“Industry & Steel 2030”) : a research
study of extraordinarily high level centered around
the impact and evolutions of the global macro tren-
ds of the steel industry, in terms of innovation, sustai-
nability, distribution and logistics, results of which will
be presented during the three days of Made in Steel
2015. These innovative trajectories for the future of Si-

derweb are rooted in the figures on which the steel
community can count. With over 1.1 million visualiza-
tions in 2014 and an increase of 59.4% of new sessions
with respect to 2013, Siderweb confirms a leading
position on the national iron and steel scene and is
ready to maintain this standard, but above all to grow
even further in the future.
Siderweb - Il futuro nell’acciaio
Prezzi e informazioni.
peso considerevole.
tracciando così analisi uniche e complete dello sta-
fermato i propri tradizionali servizi, aggiungendone,
però, di numerosi e innovativi. Con il consueto sguar-
do rivolto al futuro, Siderweb ha impresso a sé stes-
so un primo, profondo cambiamento evolvendo da
«Portale della siderurgia» a «Community dell’accia-
io». Lo ha fatto confermando la propria specificità
informativa, ma con una comunicazione che diven-
ta circolare, social e tailor made. La piattaforma
responsive fornita dalla nuova struttura grafica ga-
rantisce massima fruizione all’utente in movimento.
vo servizio My Siderweb.
Siderweb
dallo scorso 11 febbraio 2014 ha acquistato il 100%
di Made in Steel, la principale conference and exhi-
comunicazione, posizionamento e rafforzamento
stimonianza l’ambizioso progetto «Industria e Accia-
Steel 2015.
futuro.

«Industria & Acciaio 2030»: Made
in Steel’s key forum
Industria & Acciaio 2030. This is the name of the project
whose conclusions will be a major feature of Made in
Steel 2015, the 6th
steel conference & exhibition.
Concept and development
The idea of Industria & Acciaio 2030 was the brain-
child of the steel community Siderweb. In early 2014,
a time of acute crisis for the Italian and European steel
industry, marked by severe production overcapacity,
plummeting domestic consumption and rock-bottom
profitability, Siderweb launched the challenge of rai-
sing the bar, taking a broader view and envisaging
steel’s long-term prospects. The steel community
decided to conduct a study on general economic
macrotrends out to 2030 to assess the outlook for
the steel industry and identity the major changes to
be expected in the future. Two parallel approaches
were adopted. Siderweb set up an internal Scientific
Committee - made up of Gianpietro Benedetti, Pre-
sident of Danieli & C. Officine Meccaniche; Aldo Bo-
nomi, Director of the A.A.S.TER. Consortium; Antonio
Gozzi, Federacciai Chairman; Carlo Mapelli, Lecturer
in Steel Manufacturing at Milan’s Polytechnic; Giulia-
no Noci, Lecturer in Marketing at Milan’s Polytechnic
University, Dipak R. Pant, Anthropologist and Lec-
turer at the Economics and Management School,
Carlo Cattaneo University; Luca Paolazzi, Director of
Confindustria’s Study Centre; and Economist Marco
Vitale. The Committee’s task was to guide, validate
and provide general oversight of the research work
conducted. Siderweb’s second approach was to
commission the A.A.S.TER. Consortium to carry out a
survey among steel industry players and stakeholders.
The survey, carried out during March, April and May
2014, comprised a quantitative assessment (telepho-
ne interviews) and a qualitative study (face-to-face
interviews). Sector operators were asked how they
viewed Italy’s position on the global market, the main
challenges to be met to make Italy’s manufacturing
capability competitive, how they saw the steel sec-
tor’s prospects from 2014 through to 2030, and the
role of trade associations representing sector players.
The view coming out of the replies - reports A.A.S.TER.
- is that the industry must be “a green economy pla-
yer, produce steel that increasingly meets the diver-
se customer needs and provide enhanced technical
and sales assistance in the wake of greater supply
chain integration”. These were seen as the key chal-
lenges facing Italian steel making in coming years,
a view expressed by the different trade associations
representing producers, distributors and end-users.
Another opinion to emerge was that “while the cur-
rent crisis could lead to a weakening of the European
economies before the clout of the emerging countri-
es, it could also be an opportunity for a new begin-
ning based on two pillars: knowledge and sustaina-
bility”. These conclusions, along with a host of other
findings, were presented at the Industria & Acciaio
2030 forum held in Milan on June 4, 2014.
A year of work
June 4, 2014 marked the start of an even broader
11. Siderweb - special edition Made in Steel 2015
11
project. The Milan meeting not only examined the
findings of the A.A.S.TER. survey but also looked at
the possible scenarios for the industrial sector, steel
manufacturing and human activity in general 15 ye-
ars down the line. Speakers included Domenico De
Masi, Professor of Sociology at Rome’s Sapienza Uni-
versity, Dipak R. Pant, Lecturer in Anthropology and
Comparative Economic Systems at the Carlo Catta-
neo University (LIUC), Giorgio Barba Navaretti, Politi-
cal Economy Professor, University of Milan, Gianfran-
co Tosini, Siderweb Study Centre Director, Stefano
Scaglia, CEO Gruppo Scaglia and Chairman of the
Cluster Lombardo Fabbrica Intelligente - AFIL, and
Aldo Bonomi, Founder and Director of the A.A.S.TER.
Consortium. This led to 3 topics coming out of the
survey results being chosen for further in-depth study
within the framework of Industria & Acciaio 2030: su-
stainability, innovation, and distribution and logistics.
The next step, in September 2014, was to appoint 3
study coordinators, one for each topic. These are: Di-
pak R. Pant for sustainability; Tullio Tolio for innovation,
and Rino Ferrata for distribution and logistics.
Their task: to guide work in their respective panel and
draw the conclusions on the basis of the information
and opinions provided by the entrepreneurs, acade-
mics and analysts involved by Siderweb. The appro-
ach is that of ‘scenario planning’, which, in the words
of Professor Pant, is “constructed by means of a ratio-
nal exercise starting from phenomenological obser-
vation based on the ethnographic method (i.e. the
empirical phase), followed by an analytical phase of
critical appraisal and comparison, that then leads to
a prospective phase in which the different future out-
comes are outlined”. Between September 2014 and
February 2015, a series of theme-specific meetings
were held under the guidance of the coordinators,
taking advantage of the Siderweb forum to allow all
sector operators to participate. The results of the first
few months of work were presented at a consultation
meeting held in Milan on February 6, 2015. This initial
phase aimed at collecting the key ideas and views
of the major sector trade associations and stakehol-
ders that had already participated in the A.A.S.TER
questionnaire and the opening meeting of June 4,
2014. Further work led to the publication entitled In-
dustria & Acciaio 2030 presenting the conclusions of
the full survey conducted between 2014 and 2015.
Industria & Acciaio-Made in Steel
The most appropriate venue to present the results of
the Made in Steel study to a specialist and general
public is the steel sector Conference & Exhibition.
From the outset, the venue has been a focal point for
debate on the state-of-the-art and future prospects
of the Italian and international steel industry.
This year is no exception. The meeting “Industria &
Acciaio 2030. Innovation, sustainability and distribu-
tion: how the steel industry will change over the next
15 years” will be held on May 20, the opening day
of Made in Steel, at 2:30 p.m. It will take an in-depth
look at the conclusions coming out of the Industria &
Acciaio 2030 project. In addition, the seminar “Indu-
stria & Acciaio 2030: distribution and logistics of the
future” scheduled for Friday, May 22 at 2:30 p.m. will
examine how future changes will impact the Italian
steel distribution market. The meeting will be atten-
ded by major Italian sector operators.

L’architrave di Made in Steel:
«Industria e Acciaio 2030»
«Industria e Acciaio 2030».

tattate.

mici Comparati presso l’Università Carlo Cattaneo,
LIUC), Giorgio Barba Navaretti (professore ordinario
Intelligente - AFIL) e Aldo Bonomi (fondatore e diret-
tore del Consorzio A.A.S.TER.). Oltre a ciò, partendo
l’approfondimento critico e comparativo (fase ana-
litica) che poi aiuta a visualizzare i vari sbocchi futuri
(fase prospettica)».
«Industria e Acciaio 2030» - Made in Steel
ca è Made in Steel.

The adrenalin and the challenge: these are the di-
rectives that make up the professional and creative
choices of Oliviero Baldini, architect and artistic Ddi-
rector of the 2015 edition of Made in Steel. Industry
and steel are worlds apart from his usual experien-
ce but they were the stimulus that prompted him to
undertake this new professional adventure. Baldini’s
curriculum is studded with different and irregular ex-
periences. His usual environment is the world of be-
auty, fashion, art and jewelry, contexts that comple-
tely contrast with heavy manufacturing, with steel
and with industry. “I joined Made in Steel because
I was driven by curiosity, which is vital in my choices
- explains Baldini. I also strongly believe in the main
characteristic that exhibitions of today must have,
and that is to be able to communicate effectively.
Organizers and exhibitors alike share one common
objective: to represent their image expressively, a va-
lue that has only recently been added to the DNA of
exhibitions”. For this and many other reasons, Baldini
says “My part in the staging of an event is to be able
to transmit a message to its community that does not
take any effort to understand or waste time of the
visitors. Stand projects are an extreme synthesis of ex-
perience, design, interest in art and in communica-
tion. They have a much more complex meaning than
one might imagine but if it does not take us too much
time to understand, then I can consider my goal ac-
complished”. The purpose of all these aspects is well
represented in the roles that, since 2006, Oliviero Bal-
dini has played in the staging of Pitti Uomo and Pit-
ti Immagine, the prestigious Florentine High Fashion
Exhibitions. He is the Creative Designer and Director
of all staging and installations: both prominent roles
in the organization of such internationally renowned
exhibitions that are heavily under the spotlight. Trade
fairs, even if Baldini does not like to define them as
such, are one of the milestones of the long professio-
nal voyage of the architect. “I believe that my pro-
fession should be practiced after having travelled a
long road of knowledge and education, that leads
to the acquisition of competence even of an eco-
nomic and technological nature. That is why I like to
think of myself as a contemporary craftsman of ideas,
called upon to seize the day, with all its numerous un-
certainties”. This is because our today in particular is
in a “transitory phase” explains Baldini. “Every historic
moment was
a c c o m p a -
nied by an
instrument,
a form of art
more apt
than others
to immortali-
ze it. Today,
this role is played by the web and even though we
know a lot about it, we ignore the repercussions it will
have on our future even on design and architecture
of tomorrow”.
Being able to cancel the concept of time and distan-
ce, what changes will digital technology be able to
imprint on art and on taste?
“In 1972 I was in New York for the first time, attrac-
ted to the phenomena of music and discos like a
magnate, an interest that has led me to visit various
discos in every angle of the world. On New Year’s
Eve, I waited in line with my wife hoping to get into
Studio 54, but a long row with hundreds of meters of
people ahead made us loose hope of ever getting
in - recounts Baldini -. But once the bouncers found
out we were Italian, they allowed us to pass to the
front of the queue and let us in. It was the year of
the exhibition “Italy, The New Domestic Landscape”
at MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art, the exhibition
was curated by Emilio Ambasz who united, for the
first time, the great masters of Italian design and the
new exponents in the vanguard. This was how the
world got to know and fall madly in love with the
Made in Italy trademark”. Today, according to the
architect, it is very difficult to maintain this trademark.
Globalization has torn down the barriers of time and
of space. But he affirms with even more conviction
than ever the importance of the immediate, of the
here and now. To provide responses to a continually
diverse inexhaustible world, this is the challenge of an
architect. “I cannot reveal what the guise of the 2015
edition will be - concludes Baldini; but I can say that
the word “Quiet” represents my project”. Participants
will be left with a sensation of the colours blue and
green. The world and steel is still changing. We are in
step with the times.
Oliviero Baldini: a contemporary
master craftsman of ideas

2015, direttore artistico di Made in Steel.
Contesti
ben diversi dalla manifattura pesante, dall’acciaio e
dall’industria primaria. «Sono giunto a Made in Steel
spinto dalla curiosità, vitale nelle mie scelte. - spie-
ga Baldini - Credo fortemente, nel contempo, nella
caratteristica primaria che deve avere una manife-
stazione fieristica oggi: comunicare. Organizzatore e
quasi esclusivamente sull’aspetto commerciale.
prio come Made in Steel, non gradisce chiamarle e
lungo viaggio professionale dell’architetto. «Ritengo
In
- rac-
Eravamo nell’anno
dell’esposizione al Moma di «Italy, the new domestic
italiani e i nuovi esponenti dell’avanguardia. Fu allo-
in Italy». Oggi, secondo l’architetto, mantenere quel
sta cambiando ancora. Stiamo al passo.

Roberto Ariotti: “Getting back to growth
means looking to the future”
The Italian steel industry needs to take a hard look at
the future from all angles, focusing especially on the
product, process and efficiency. This, in the view of
Assofond Chairman, Roberto Ariotti, is what will en-
sure success and allow businesses to survive despite
the severe crisis.
Chairman, 2015 seems to have started on a slightly
more optimistic note. How do you see the outlook for
this year?
I've described trends in the first few months of this
year as being ‘piecemeal’. Let me explain. Results
are very different from one sector to another, and
from one company to another within the same indu-
stry. For example, while the automotive industry has
shaken itself down, we still have mechanical engine-
ering that has yet to choose the best way to inter-
cept the rise in consumption that should be coming,
dovetailing with the fall in the energy sector. The rise
in the request for quotes from abroad is certainly a
positive signal in the wake of the recent deprecia-
tion. But I still think we should exercise caution.
We're still a long way off from getting back to where
we were before the crisis. What in your view are the
skills Italian companies need to ensure recovery?
That's an area where the margin of uncertainty is
smaller. This was confirmed to me also during a re-
cent trip to Korea and Japan. Companies that go
for excellence of product and management and
take a courageous view of the future do not fear the
crisis. This is borne out by Japanese companies who-
se geographical proximity exposes them to Chinese
competition more than us. And this is the road we too
must take, and those who have done so are alrea-
dy reaping the benefits. Companies that have suc-
ceeded in responding to the market more quickly,
improving communication between the various parts
of their organisation, but also up and down the sup-
ply chain, have been able to keep in step with con-
sumption demands and deliver better performance.
What, if any headway has been made at the institu-
tional level, and what still remains to be done?
Many things
need doing,
but I believe
that the first is
for politicians
at all levels
to become
fully aware
that they can
no longer drag their feet on the question of reforms,
putting up what appear sometimes as unfounded
arguments to hold up reforms which, even if imper-
fect can no longer be put off. As to fiscal policy, I be-
lieve that a great step forward would be to contain
as much as possible the impact of taxation on pro-
duction. Let me explain. Taxes on energy, raw ma-
terials or property tax on machinery are a drag on
a company's competitiveness. It would be better to
shift the focus onto assets rather than revenue still to
be realised. Finally, I think that policy decisions should
focus on those companies that perform best in the
various sectors, and not continue to prop up sectors
and companies that have shown they are unable to
compete.
Made in Steel is in its sixth edition. What is the value
added of MIS for the Italian foundry business?
Speaking for Assofond, but also for myself, this is the
first year we have decided to work in close collabo-
ration with Made in Steel. Already now though, what
has struck me can be summed up in three words: vi-
sibility, enthusiasm and dynamism.
Being able to offer the industry visibility and an oppor-
tunity for exchange allows people to change their
pessimistic view of the half-empty glass and see it as
half-full. I also think it's very important to give compa-
nies a perspective on the future because that’s the
only way to support growth. Made in Steel and the
Industria & Acciaio 2030 project are important steps
in that direction.

no in corso?
Aziende
Made in Steel festeggia la sesta edizione.
Cionono-
in tre parole: visibilità, freschezza e dinamicità.
cesso Made in Steel e il progetto «Industria e Acciaio
2030» sono un passo importante.

In a short interview with Siderweb, Federacciai Chai-
rman, Antonio Gozzi described Made in Steel as a
symbol. The head of the organisation representing
Italian steelmakers also gave his views on the current
state of Italy’s steel industry.
Chairman, 2015 seems to have started on a slightly
more optimistic note. How do you see the outlook for
this year?
Unfortunately, unlike the broader economic figures,
2015 started with negative results for the steel indust-
ry, both in terms of production and consumption. So
the recovery, which I'm convinced is there - as was
underlined by the Ministry and the ECB - will hopeful-
ly also embrace our sector. There is cause for a little
more optimism though given the increase in the first
few months of the year of electricity consumption, an
indication that our country's manufacturing activity
has picked up, probably due to the euro. The depre-
ciation, begun in 2014, gives exports a great boost.
This has obviously had some impact on the consum-
ption of materials, even if for only some of the com-
panies in our industry.
We're still a long way off from getting back to where
we were before the crisis. What in your view are the
skills Italian companies need to ensure recovery?
The skills we must target are no secret. I have said
so on many occasions. They are: specialisation, high
value-added products, innovation and training. To
these you must also add enhancing our ability to be
extremely flexible - something the Italian steel indu-
stry has shown it is very good at in these crisis years.
We have yet to learn, however, to communicate our
savoir-faire, get it acknowledged, and not rest on our
laurels; we must also continue to invest in the training
of our people. I'm talking of the workers at Nucor, be-
cause these are the people I see every day. But it's
the same for the other companies. Today, if a steel
worker is to deliver the required quality levels, he has
to have training on a par with a graduate. Produ-
cing certain types of quality steel requires production
environments and an attention to cleanliness similar
to a hospital operating theatre. Any sort of foreign
material could jeopardise the end result. This is the
direction we must go in if we are to put ourselves in
a different le-
ague to steel
products that
today are
considered
mere com-
modities.
What, if any
headway has been made at the institutional level,
and what still remains to be done?
I can only confirm that this government, unlike the
past, has given particular attention to the steel indu-
stry, and that Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi has decla-
red several times in Parliament that steel is a strategic
industry for the country. The undersecretary of the Pri-
me Minister’s office, Claudio De Vincenti, follows steel
matters closely, despite the pressures of his new po-
sition. Alongside the most publicized provisions, the
most recent decrees are a boost for the industry, like
putting taxation of joined ventures on a par with the
tax regime in force in Germany and Switzerland, as
well as in other European Union countries. This measu-
re will, I believe, be able to attract further investments
to Italy. What still has to be done is to abandon the
‘austerity at-all-costs’ policy and return to investing in
necessary infrastructure and modernising our networ-
ks, measures that have too often been postponed on
account of budgetary constraints. In addition, I think
that the creation of Eurobonds would also provide a
further impetus.
Made in Steel is in its sixth edition. What is the value
added of MIS for the Italian steel business?
As well as promoting networking and business - so-
mething common to all tradeshows - I believe that
Made in Steel is a symbol for the Italian steel industry.
It is a symbol of Italian manufacturing excellence, a
way of showing we’re on the map. It's a symbol that
says: “We're here. We can, and will, deliver world-
class excellence”. I've been saying that since the
very first edition of Made in Steel. I still think it remains
the real value added of this tradeshow for the steel
industry.
Antonio Gozzi: “Made in Steel,
a symbol of Italian steel”
25. Siderweb - special edition Made in Steel 2015
25
Antonio Gozzi: “Made in Steel è un
racciai Antonio Gozzi per descrivere Made in Steel,
all’interno della breve intervista rilasciata a Siderweb,
no in corso?
to euro.
L’at-
Germania e Svizzera, oltre ad altri paesi all’interno
della Comunità Europea. Un provvedimento che cre-
do potrà attrarre anche ulteriori investimenti sull’Ita-
lia.
Made in Steel festeggia la sesta edizione.
do.
italiano.
26. Siderweb - special edition Made in Steel 2015
26
2015 starts with users in a more optimistic frame of
mind and with a tradeshow that has gained an in-
ternational breadth. These were the two main things
pointed out by Fausto Capelli, CEO of Centro Inox, in
an interview with Siderweb a few days before Made
in Steel.
Fausto Capelli, 2015 seems to have started on a
slightly more optimistic note. How do you see the out-
look for this year?
Comparing the first quarters of 2015 and 2014, I have
to say that in general terms there has been a chan-
ge for the better, especially on the processing side
and in terms of final uptake for stainless steel. Some
downstream sectors of the stainless steel supply chain
have increased their production and usage volumes
thanks to substantive foreign demand. You have to
remember though, that we’re talking about niche
markets within niche markets. I’m thinking especial-
ly about companies specialised in serving the phar-
maceutical, biomedical, nanotechnology, food and
confectionery industries. Distribution is another mat-
ter. This side of the supply chain is still going through a
difficult period, squeezed between production and
end users. They have also been hit by the recent ta-
riff regulations for some types of material coming, for
example, from China and Taiwan, which will certainly
have repercussions for these players.
We’re still a long way off from getting back to where
we were before the crisis. What in your view are the
skills Italian companies need to ensure recovery?
As we have repeated on many occasions, Italian
companies have to concentrate on enhancing the
know-how they have built up over the years: super-
specialised processing, particular kinds of surface fi-
nishes, heat treatment, etc., and compliance with re-
gulations and certification requirements, especially in
the area of environmental impact. These are all key
factors. If Italian companies can continue to develop
in this direction and attribute the right value to the
quality they offer, they will be able to compete in a
market where the yardstick is not the mere value of
the raw material but of the overall product offered.
What, if any
headway has
been made
at the institu-
tional level,
and what still
remains to be
done?
In the stain-
less steel sector the Government must bear in mind
that our world is made up practically exclusively of
small and medium size companies that process and
produce semi-finished goods. Because of their size,
these companies find it hard to access funding or are
dragged down by bureaucratic red tape even for
the apparently simplest operations like, for example,
minor extensions to production facilities. It is factors
like these that at times cause delocalisation, and
which could be avoided if greater attention were gi-
ven to the sector.
Made in Steel is in its sixth edition. What is the value
added of MIS for the Italian stainless steel business?
I can only be very positive about the creation and
development of Made in Steel, where we have often
also had a stand thanks to the interest of the orga-
nisers. I’d also like to add my own personal opinion.
Since Made in Steel moved from Brescia to Milan, it
has gained enormously in international visibility, so-
mething that we have experienced at first hand in
terms of contacts made. This collaboration is best
seen in the topics addressed by the conferences that
we have organised in close collaboration with MIS.
This year on May 21, in the run-up to Expo, we will be
presenting our major topic: the relationship between
food safety, environmental impact and stainless ste-
el. These issues will be again dealt with at two events
during Expo on June 10 and September 24.
In the future we could also envisage the possibility
of creating a dedicated stainless steel area within
Made in Steel and so attract specific interest exhibi-
tors and visitors. For the moment though, it’s just an
idea for the future.

Fausto Capelli: “Made in Steel, una crescita internazionale
Ing.
In parti-
colare mi riferisco ad aziende specializzate in farma-
ceutico, biomedicale, nanotecnologie, alimentare
e dolciario.
costruito in questi anni.
prodotto offerto.
Proprio a
causa di questa dimensione contenuta spesso le
imprese dell’inox faticano nell’accedere a finanzia-
Questi
Inoltre vorrei
senza in Expo, alcune riflessioni in materia dello stretto
rapporto tra sicurezza alimentare, impatto ambien-
tale e acciaio inossidabile.
auspicio.

On the eve of Made in Steel 2015, the steel distribu-
tion and scrap sectors are slightly more upbeat. To
get a better understanding, Siderweb asked Assofer-
met Chairman, Roberto Lunardi a few questions.
Chairman, 2015 seems to have started on a slightly
more optimistic note. How do you see the outlook for
this year?
All the statistics hold out great hopes for 2015, and
certainly the first few months of this year have been
more positive than the past, even if things have now
flattened out. Let’s hope that things will pick up - also
thanks to opportunities for operators to meet in pla-
ces like Made in Steel - and recovery will really set
in; even if we mustn’t delude ourselves and think in
terms of a sharp incisive recovery. In all this though, I
think that Assofermet does play a supporting role and
allows its members to be one step ahead.
We're still a long way off from getting back to where
we were before the crisis. What in your view are the
skills Italian companies need to ensure recovery?
As we have said many times, we have lost a lot of
ground. However, despite the difficult times, the di-
stribution segment has withstood the impact of the
crisis and now is set to climb back. Major indications
could also come out of the Siderweb Industria & Ac-
ciaio 2030 research project. However, in my expe-
rience flexibility and well-timed purchases have su-
stained operators in the past and will continue to do
so. They are features that have been developed also
thanks to Assofermet’s operator network, which is the
very essence of our association.
What, if any headway has been made at the institu-
tional level, and what still remains to be done?
Compared with 2013, a few small steps have certainly
been taken also in this direction. However, our expec-
tations are for greater commitment to trigger growth.
Let me explain. We now have all the prerequisites in
place and this has clearly made companies more
optimistic. But in addition to concrete investments,
recent events have shown that we still have a lot to
do to reinstate a moral climate, fight against corrup-
tion and tax evasion. Politicians still have to shed their
self-referen-
tial mindset
and consi-
der what the
country ne-
eds.
Made in Steel is in its sixth edition. What is the value
added of MIS for the Italian steel distribution business?
Without doubt, being able to meet at important fo-
rums like Made in Steel is very important for the whole
Italian steel industry, be it the production or distribu-
tion side. The opportunity for companies and custo-
mers to exchange views and have such a prestigious
showcase is without doubt a value added. In addi-
tion, Made in Steel takes special care to provide a
broad panorama of conferences. So you can easily
understand the growing success of these six editions.
At Assofermet we point out these opportunities to our
members on a daily basis.

Roberto Lunardi: “Made in Steel,
no in corso?
In tut-
associazione.
Made in Steel festeggia la sesta edizione, qual è
dell’acciaio italiano?
Senza dubbio avere occasioni di incontro soprattutto
in piazze importanti come Made in Steel è stato sen-
Potersi incontrare, poter mettere a
poi pensiamo che in Made in Steel è molto curata
queste sei edizioni. Anche noi come Assofermet pro-
viamo quotidianamente a proporre queste opportu-
nità ai nostri associati.
