 In South Africa bookkeeping and accounting
are scarce skills. FASSET has done a study
on scarce skills in 2015 and then they
published their Scarce Skills Guide 2015.

 Trainee Accountant
 Finance Manager
 General Accountant
 Accounts Clerk
 Payroll Clerk
 Debt Collector

 Your bookkeeping qualification will ensure
that you are always in demand.

 Also all government departments have
accounting and bookkeeping divisions.
 They work every year to get a “clean audit”.
 That means they need well-trained, qualified,
committed and experienced bookkeeping and
accounting staff and managers.

 The ICB bookkeeping courses start at NQF
level 3.
 And they go up to NQF level 6.
 Matric is at NQF level 4.

 So, NO! You don’t need matric to study an
ICB Bookkeeping Course.
 Eventually you will end up with a qualification two
levels above matric.

 The ICB bookkeeping courses are developed
to be accessible for students who must work
and study at the same time.

 With distance learning, you can study an hour
every evening.
 There are 5 exams every year.
 Whenever you’re ready you can go write the
exam.

 After completing the first four subjects, you
will already get your first qualification from
FASSET, and your first ICB Programme
Certificate.

 They are two sides of the same thing!
The difference between
Bookkeeping and Accounting
 In bookkeeping you are busy with the
accurate recording of all the transactions of a
company or department.
 You make sure that all income and all expenditure
are properly recorded.
The difference between
Bookkeeping and Accounting
 At the level where your job becomes more
complicated, because you are also reporting
and analysing the business financial
information, we start calling it Accounting.
 So an Accountant is a senior Bookkeeper!

The ICB bookkeeping programme is divided
into different levels:
 Foundation Level
 Intermediate Level
 Upper Intermediate Level
 Advanced Level

 As you complete each level, you will get
recognition from the ICB for the ICB
bookkeeping courses, in the form of an ICB
Programme Certificate.
 As you complete the different courses inside
the levels, you will get recognition from
FASSET in the form of your formal
qualification.

The ICB Bookkeeping / Financial Accounting
Programme is broken into four levels, each with its
own full qualification.
 Foundation level – National Certificate: Bookkeeping
(NQF Level 3)
 Intermediate level – FET Certificate: Bookkeeping
(NQF level 4)
 Upper Intermediate level – National Diploma: Technical
Financial Accounting (NQF level 5)
 Advanced level – National Diploma: Financial
Accounting (NQF level 6)

Foundation Level
 If you did not do that well at school, or you
failed matric, or you have not studied for
many years, then the foundation level helps
you bridge the gap and get back into studying.
Foundation Level
 The level is NQF 3 - the level below matric.
 So students with Grade 10 (Standard 8) will
be able to cope with the work.
 You do not need any previous knowledge if you
start at this level.
 And you need to be at least 16 years old.
Foundation Level
 You must pass four subjects.
 Recommended time: 12 months.
 Distance learning students can take up to 18
months.
Intermediate
Level
Intermediate Level
 The intermediate level are for students who
have successfully completed the foundation
level.
 To enter at this level you must already have
your National Certificate: Bookkeeping.
Intermediate Level
 You must pass two subjects.
 Usually completed in six months.
 Distance learning students can take up to
nine months.
Upper
Intermediate
Level
Upper Intermediate Level
 At this level you move from Bookkeeping to
Accounting.
 You must have your FET Certificate:
Bookkeeping to gain entry to the Upper
Intermediate Level.
Upper Intermediate Level
 You must pass two subjects.
 Usually completed in 6 months.
 Distance learning students can take up to
nine months.
Advanced
Level
Advanced Level
 Here you will gain your National Diploma:
Financial Accounting (NQF Level 6).
 You must be in possession of your National
Diploma: Technical Financial Accounting to
gain access to this level.
Advanced Level
 You must pass four subjects.
 Usually completed in 12 months.
 Distance learning students can take a bit
longer.

attend classes.

email or some online system.

 Unisa does not offer any of the ICB courses.
 If you plan to study a degree at Unisa, make
sure you check with them if they will accept
any of your ICB studies for academic credits
or for entry onto their degree programmes.

  • 4. Why Study One of the ICB Bookkeeping Courses?  In South Africa bookkeeping and accounting are scarce skills. FASSET has done a study on scarce skills in 2015 and then they published their Scarce Skills Guide 2015.

The different Levels of study with the ICB  As you complete each level, you will get recognition from the ICB for the ICB bookkeeping courses, in the form of an ICB Programme Certificate.  As you complete the different courses inside the levels, you will get recognition from FASSET in the form of your formal qualification.

Courses that makes up the ICB Financial Accounting Programme The ICB Bookkeeping / Financial Accounting Programme is broken into four levels, each with its own full qualification.  Foundation level – National Certificate: Bookkeeping (NQF Level 3)  Intermediate level – FET Certificate: Bookkeeping (NQF level 4)  Upper Intermediate level – National Diploma: Technical Financial Accounting (NQF level 5)  Advanced level – National Diploma: Financial Accounting (NQF level 6)

  • 26. Foundation Level  If you did not do that well at school, or you failed matric, or you have not studied for many years, then the foundation level helps you bridge the gap and get back into studying.
  • 27. Foundation Level  The level is NQF 3 - the level below matric.  So students with Grade 10 (Standard 8) will be able to cope with the work.  You do not need any previous knowledge if you start at this level.  And you need to be at least 16 years old.
  • 28. Foundation Level  You must pass four subjects.  Recommended time: 12 months.  Distance learning students can take up to 18 months.
  • 30. Intermediate Level  The intermediate level are for students who have successfully completed the foundation level.  To enter at this level you must already have your National Certificate: Bookkeeping.
  • 31. Intermediate Level  You must pass two subjects.  Usually completed in six months.  Distance learning students can take up to nine months.
  • 33. Upper Intermediate Level  At this level you move from Bookkeeping to Accounting.  You must have your FET Certificate: Bookkeeping to gain entry to the Upper Intermediate Level.
  • 34. Upper Intermediate Level  You must pass two subjects.  Usually completed in 6 months.  Distance learning students can take up to nine months.
  • 36. Advanced Level  Here you will gain your National Diploma: Financial Accounting (NQF Level 6).  You must be in possession of your National Diploma: Technical Financial Accounting to gain access to this level.
  • 37. Advanced Level  You must pass four subjects.  Usually completed in 12 months.  Distance learning students can take a bit longer.

  • 41. Distance Learning  Studying ICB bookkeeping courses via distance learning is for people who cannot attend classes.
  • 42. Distance Learning  Your course provider sends you books and study notes.  And then helps you study over the phone, or email or some online system.
  • 44. ICB Courses at Unisa  Unisa does not offer any of the ICB courses.  If you plan to study a degree at Unisa, make sure you check with them if they will accept any of your ICB studies for academic credits or for entry onto their degree programmes.
