5G Workshop: Taiwan June 2017
- 1. Role of small cells in the early success of 5G
Caroline Gabriel, Content Director, SCF
- 2. 5G will be about many services and use cases – early trials in dense
scenarios
• More capacity → denser networks of small cells
• More coverage means more cells → small cells more easily deployed
• More spectrum at higher frequencies → small cells needed for shorter
ranges
• More bandwidth with low power shared spectrum → small cells needed
shorter ranges
Small cells will be at the heart of 5G

5G requirements point to even denser networks of smaller cells
- 3. Early trials point to new architecture
© Small Cell Forum Ltd 2017
Without a new architecture, networks will fail due to:
• the cost of supporting rising demands
• power consumption demands
• lack of resource flexibility
Many early 5G trials are already focusing on these challenges in dense
or challenging environments
- 4. A migration path to the 5G future
79% of MNOs plan a dense
HetNet by 2020
Of those, 30% have already
planned migration to 5G
Today 5G
4G densification under way

- 5. Some 5G elements are evolutionary …
• Many MNOs will put other pieces of the
new network in place before 5G NR
• Densification can start in 4G, as long as
there is a clear 5G roadmap
• LTE will live a long time, developing
alongside 5G
• Initial use cases will often enhance
existing models – e.g. eMBB

- 6. But the scale and urgency is new
• Some aspects of 5G are unprecedented
• Not just about technology change
• Real change will be scale:
• Hyperdensity in cities, stadiums,
some enterprises
• Ubiquity for IoT, critical
communications, remote access or
mobile base stations
Many operators need to reach huge
scale in just a few years

- 11. 5G scale does not mean uniformity
Many types of deployments ….
© Small Cell Forum Ltd 2017
- 12. This requires many types of cell
• Standalone
• Virtualized
• High power
• Ultra-low power
• New form factors
emerge for new
use cases
© Small Cell Forum Ltd 2017
- 13. • Common standards and frameworks create scale for everyone:
• High innovation within that common framework to support many form factors and
services
• Scale for chip and device makers
• Accelerated availability for new and established service providers
• Lower barriers to innovation for vendors and operators
But it does mean unity

• Radio standards
• Interfaces for multivendor
interoperability (FAPI, nFAPI)
• Common architectures (HetNet, SON)
• APIs

- 15. SCF has a dual role:
• Drive the continuing adoption of small cells in everyday use, now
• Plot the path to next generation technologies and use cases
Initiatives to facilitate at-scale deployment today:
• Identifying and promoting case studies to share best practice
• High profile campaigns targeted at municipalities, and at key enterprise sectors
• Practical steps to lower deployment barriers – e.g. work on standard equipment
classes to reduce regulatory red tape
• Release programs pull together processes, interfaces and know-how to equip
operators with the tools to densify

- 18. • A fully virtualized, agile infrastructure that is capable of supporting multiple
radio technologies, services and customer segments
• Businesses, consumers and regulators are aware of a range of small cells
• Open and interoperable standards broadly embraced by the vendor community.
• A range of connectivity resellers addressing targeted markets
• 5G active sharing enables multi-operator neutral hosts and spectrum sharing
• Zero touch self-configuration organises any deployment to operator
acceptable quality.
• A fully virtualized network that can be sliced and diced to offer a range of
services and optimized for different QoS requirements
