4. FOREWORD
By SmilingOne Founder
It has been an incredible year of
stepping into ‘our Resource’
and fully understanding what
this means both as individuals
(Unique Journeys) and as an
organisation (A Shared
Journey).
We have spent the last four years giving
unconditionally and this has been essential for 1)
our learning and growth and 2) for the
development of our approach: The Circle of
Change. Today we truly understand our potential
and we have experienced the huge impact of each
seed planted – lives are changing!
Even if we are only a puzzle piece in this change
we do know that we are an important one and
that the role we play is KEY! We see it as a
privilege and do take it very seriously. This is one
of the big drivers in our fundraising campaigns –
sustaining and expanding our outreach for the
benefit of our society with sponsors and partners
in community building who are proud to walk side
by side with us. Together is always better!
E X P A N S I O N is one of the great experiences
and outcomes of the year gone by. Most
importantly the E X P A N S I O N of what we ‘think
we know’ moving us into a space of unlimited
possibilities! One of the ingredients that has
played a vital role in this and has taken us beyond
has been our financial challenge. It has served as
an experience which has taken us deeper into our
passion, deeper into our commitment – fuelled by
5. MISSION
We inspire personal valuebased leadership. We go to the people, we live with them, we love them, we learn
from them, we start with what they have and build on what they know. When the task is accomplished and
the work is done, the people will all remark: We have done it ourselves.
an experience which has taken us deeper into
our passion, deeper into our commitment –
fuelled by a strong sense of purpose! ‘Not
having’ is an illusion. So many new ideas have
been born, visions have shaped and big doors
have opened. It has been a very healthy
S T R E T C H !
We have built and strengthened relationships
with sponsors and partners in community
building. We have welcomed 13 new team
members (facilitators) – some of them featured
in wonderful articles in this report - adding their
unique spice to the foundation. We have
received special recognition from Dept of
Correctional Services which has given us
regional clearance to all prisons in the Western
Cape (WC). We have added Pollsmoor Women
and Malmesbury Medium to our active prison
portfolio (servicing 7 of the 42 prisons in WC).
We have opened the door to government
funding and with a four months DSD funded
project we have enrolled 40 parolees and 80
families into our programme. We have made the
first important steps towards building our
Nyanga Learning Village – one of our big
community building tasks for 2012. We have
reached and
community building tasks for 2012. We have
reached and touched thousands of people –
planted seeds in the garden of their lives,
inspired change!
With huge expansion comes an even greater
responsibility! Transparency and accountability
is KEY. We pride ourselves in comprehensive
communication like quarterly reports, bi-
monthly colourful newsletters, daily updates,
dynamic team meetings and we have invested
time and energy in developing and enhancing
our database and filing system. We have
strengthened our governance and financial
controls throughout the year knowing that every
ship which sails towards excellence needs great
leadership!
THANK YOU to a stunning team, our
beneficiaries, our sponsors and partners and
everyone who has supported us this year!

OUR VISION
SOCIAL COHESION & CRIME DIVERSION
“We are continuously developing as a community. We thrive on shared values, shared challenges
and equal opportunities. We walk united in diversity - each one of us knowing that it starts with a
better ME (individual responsibility) for a better WE (shared responsibility).”
8. OUR
APPROACH
Any concept is often best illustrated through a
real life experience where the CIRCLE OF
CHANGE has been (is being) activated in a
natural step by step growth process.
An example is one of the parolees attending our
Tuesday Support Group in Gugulethu.
Patrick has after only a few months in our Circles
of Sharing started to share of himself openly,
availing his personal experiences only to
discover so much more about himself, healing
old wounds and tapping into his potential.
(Activation of Pillar 1)
On his journey of discovery he has found that
one of his passions is to give back to his
community. He is currently in the process of
starting soccer practice for the youth in his own
community. (Activation of Pillar 2)
He is still on the journey of discovering the
resource he is and will soon tap into skills
development (Pillar 3) for full activation of his
personal Circle of Change.
The more we attend to ourselves (Pillar 1) and
to others (Pillar 2) the sooner we discover where
we would like to strengthen/educate ourselves
and add further tools to our tool boxes (Pillar
1+2+3).
9. PILLAR 1 PILLAR 2 PILLAR 3
THE CIRCLE OF CHANGE
We have through the past four years in our
Community Development Initiative
developed an approach that we call CIRCLES
OF CHANGE. It is an approach that we have
learned by working intensively in change
processes – with individuals and
communities.
A CIRCLE OF CHANGE consists of THREE PILLARS (key change elements) where THE RESPONSIBLE
INDIVIDUAL is an essential puzzle piece in each of these pillars – as a personal leadership
development programme, as an entrepreneurial skills development programme (the
Responsibility Coach Education) and as a way of leading a life in gratitude and service. THE
CIRCLE OF CHANGE invites a society to join hands – each of us adding our unique puzzle piece.
THE THREE PILLARS
10. A
OUR
PROJECTS
“When we learn to understand that challenges
are in our lives to assist us in becoming more
whole and finding a much better balance, we
can begin to embrace and trust our path with
everything we attract into it, find peace and
happiness and walk through life as a
responsible individual.” ( T.R.I.)
The SmilingOne Team of Guides /
Responsibility Coaches inspire change and
responsible living by availing themselves as
Students and Explorers of life, Travel
Companions, who invite their programme
participants to explore/learn alongside them –
unlocking potential!
In each of our projects we establish a platform
for personal valuebased leadership
development using THE RESPONSIBLE
INDIVIDUAL (T.R.I.) – the KEY change element
in the CIRCLE OF CHANGE!
We walk our talk!
12. KEY INTENSIFIED FOCUS
ON RE-INTEGRATION PRIOR
RELEASE:
It has been a remarkable year
which has enabled us to intensify
all our prison processes. More
than ever do we understand the
value of meeting the ‘offender’
prior to release - especially after
we have gained far more insight
during the last four months of the
year where we extended our
outreach and worked intensively
with parolees as well. There is so
much ‘noise’ in life which very
often distracts the parolees from
making the choice to attend to
themselves and a possible life-
changing journey through self
discovery.
Inside prison ‘life’ is on pause for
a moment and this becomes an
amazing opportunity to reach
them and assist them to develop
and shape a strong toolbox
(values, key roles, mission and a
vision with focus, action and
improvement) prepared for their
release, for their families and for
society!
Dear Ms Andersen
I want to thank you for helping
me. You have allowed me to find
balance when I needed it the
most. No wonder Soren
Kierkegaard said:
”Life must be lived forwards but it can only be
understood backwards.”
Do you know the feeling when you look for
something but you don’t know where to start and
after a historic search you find the answer. That kind
of satisfaction cannot be explained Ms Andersen. It
is unique and valuable. You embrace it with
everything you have and that is me. I used to say
when I was in trouble... ‘No one understands me’
which felt to be true simply because I did not
understand myself. But today I do... even though it is
just a portion because there is still a long road to go.
But I am ready and willing!
So I want you to know that this programme is
unique and bearing fruits daily because I have
noticed so far that I am questioned in every aspect
of my being and I am up for the challenge as well as
the assistance... Kind Regards Daniel
Daniel has been with us for 2 years now, he is one of our PEER
FRIENDS and is today guiding his fellow inmates through THE
RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL in Worcester Prison. A remarkable
journey of a truly remarkable Man who has chosen change
with all of his Being! Every single day he walks his talk.
13. PEER FRIENDS
MAKE A HUGE IMPACT INSIDE
PRISON! THEY ARE CATALYSTS
OF CHANGE!
One of the development platforms
that we have built, nurtured and
expanded throughout the past 4+
years inside SA prisons is the ‘Train
the Trainer’ element of our Services
Delivery. Offenders who have
completed both Part 1 and Part 2 of
THE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL has
an opportunity to train as ‘Peer
Friends’ (coach/guide/facilitator).
The great advantage is that the Peer
Friend is living in the highly
challenged environment and lives as
an example of the change he/she
has invited into his/her life. This
always sparks curiosity from fellow
inmates and showcases that change
is possible. And not only is it
possible – there is guidance
available!
Sometimes
the brightest light comes from
the darkest of places!
OUTPUT /OUTCOME
- We have received special recognition from
Department of Correctional Services (DCS) which
has given us regional clearance for the Western
Cape Province (42 prisons)
- We have added two more prisons in to our
portfolio and are now active in 7 prisons of the
42 in Western Cape:
o Brandvlei Maximum Prison
o Brandvlei Medium Prison
o Brandvlei Youth Prison
o Worcester Medium Prison
o Goodwood Medium Prison
o Malmesbury Prison (new)
o Pollsmoor Women’s Prison (new)
- T.R.I. Part 1 and Part 2 has been facilitated on a
weekly basis in each prison. Coach educational
training for and supervision of Peer Friends has
been facilitated on a bi-weekly basis in each
prison.
- We have 150 offenders active in the T.R.I
process. 83 of them have graduated in 2011.
- We have welcomed 12 new Peer Friends who
have received a bursary from our foundation
(each valued at R50,000 for 2.5 years) to attend
coach educational training. We now have a team
of 30 Peer Friends assisting facilitation of T.R.I.
inside SA prisons

16. MY LIFE
AFTER PRISON
OUTPUT
44 families of inmates were
offered an opportunity to benefit
from bi-weekly sessions from
January 2012.
OUTCOME
The families have gained wonderful
insight into themselves through the
support and care of the group and
the process The Responsible
Individual. Many friendships have
been made amongst the participants
and even family bonds have been re-
established:
a sense of self worth and hope.
ok to share your feelings
to listen and to be heard
Building and healing relationships
with self and others
A neutral place to meet to
establish friendships, to feel love
and care.
OBJECTIVE 2012/13
We ensure sustainability by merging
the family support group with our
existing Saturday T.R.I. Circle of
Sharing in Nyanga East. We invite
more families to both attend and
give back into our youth
programme.
A group filled with Mothers, Sisters, Aunts, Brothers,
Cousins and Friends of offenders that are still in
prison. This is an opportunity for family members to
feel comfortable to voice, express and share without
any judgement what life is like for them with a family
member behind bars. These families feel ridiculed,
taunted and often will remain silent about their
shameful circumstances. They bottle their feelings
up and are often left questioning and wondering.
The SmilingOne Family Support Group is a place of
sharing and caring! We have met bi- weekly on a
Saturday from 2-4pm at Manenberg Police station;
We start with a moment of silence, leaving the noise
outside, focusing on the present moment. We check
in with each other and share our stories from the
past week. The sharing is often flavoured with
questions, confusion, guilt and doubt. We go deeper.
We look at how we feel and what is causing these
feelings. We learn to embrace them and own them.
In our circle of sharing we turn each challenge into
something meaningful and purposeful, we begin to
make sense of the confusion, doubt and guilt...
We begin to heal them...
We invite trust and love into our lives again...
The family members are beginning to discover
themselves as valuable people and they begin to add
value to their own families and their communities at
large.
18. PORTFOLIO 2
OUTPUT
40 parolees were offered an
opportunity to benefit from
weekly sessions from January
2012.
- 28 attended regularly
- 2 were arrested again
- 4 received employment
- 6 stopped coming
OUTCOME
The groups have displayed true
value of sharing and surpassed any
expectations. The participants share
with openness and each concept is
explored deeply. They displayed
great attitude and willingness to
learn, one could sense that the
sharing was sincere – straight from
the heart!
developed an understanding of
our re-active patterns and how
they connect to our past
experiences. Once we
understand why we re-act in a
certain way we can start to chose
differently. We can only do that
when we have healed from our
unpleasant experiences.
BY CHRIS PLAM
It has been a very interesting four months of my
journey. I am grateful for crossing the path of the
people who are eager to learn and open to
guidance. They have shown great determination to
transform themselves into responsible individuals. I
salute all of those committed souls who
participated fully in our programme. I am aware
that the seed planted in each of them will continue
to grow and turn our community into a forest of
responsible individuals.
“I can understand myself much better now. I am
truly grateful to be part of the programme” says
Mxolisi Gudela.
“I am glad I have decided to come here because this
class is always giving me something I have been
looking for” says Nontsikelelo Msutwana.
The process is much deeper than just a thought, we
connect with our deepest feelings which we never
knew existed. It was like the wave and the sea,
everyone knew that they were individuals but now
they have become aware of that they are part of
everyone in the group as well.
One of the most valuable tools we use is TRUST!
The moment we clearly understand this concept we
treasure each moment of the past as the great
preparation of the NOW. We also start knowing
that all things that have happened to us have
shaped us to be who we are today.
19. I am humbled by the opportunity to guide and be guided by my fellow parolees. They bring so
many experiences into our circles and share from the heart. I felt like being part of their family.
They are my real family because we relate a lot. I am more than just a guide. I am a comforter, a
supporter, an advisor, an inspiration and a motivator to my fellow journey travellers.
A wave cannot tell the sea how high it wants to be and what shape it wants to take. It is the sea
that creates the wave; but the wave is the sea. I cannot tell life what great experiences I desire. Life
creates experiences; but I AM LIFE. LIFE is ME.
20. OUTCOME continued
The dynamics of this group was
amazing. The participants owned
the session. I was just watching
them unpacking each situation to
the core and each one of them
will avail a window to help each
other. I could feel compassion
among us and the desire to help
one another. We knew by this
time that we don’t have answers
to your questions; but through us
you may find yourself.
Most of the participants used the
platform to open up and off-load
some of their deepest challenges.
We have developed an
understanding of that it is okay to
cry – as a result tears were rolling
down those pretty faces. This
group had all the ingredients,
hurts, anger expressed in words,
vengeance, bitterness, happiness,
joy, laughter were some of the
ingredients.
We have built and strengthened
our partnership with community
corrections in Mitchell’s Plain.
GENTLE GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT
Chris knows with all of his being how tough the road
of re-integration can be. Support and guidance is
crucial as you adjust back into your family, back into
society. Chris began his own re-integration process as
he was released on parole from Goodwood Prison in
October 2009. He had met SmilingOne one year prior
to his release and had been very involved in the T.R.I.
sessions. It is his own personal journey and how he
has managed to turn every single challenge into an
opportunity for learning and growth that qualifies him
to be a travel companion to those who are on a
similar path as he.
Chris has also recently joined our Board of Trustees,
adding great value to our foundation!
OBJECTIVE 2012/13
To continue to provide a space for the Parolees on a
weekly basis – offering support and guidance.
We would also like to look at probationers and
engage them in our programme. They are sentenced
by courts to do programmes in their communities via
DCS.
22. PORTFOLIO 2
OUTPUT
40 families of parolees were
offered an opportunity to benefit
from bi-weekly house visits from
January 2012.
OUTCOME
The programme has had a huge
impact in the lives of the families of
the parolees. They are beginning to
accept the parolees again, giving them
a second chance and showing that
though they were disappointed from
the crime they committed they are
willing to trust and support again.
The families feel loved and cared for.
It sometimes gets really challenging to
share the same space with an
offender whose attitude one cannot
always determine. These visits serves
as an affirmation that they are not
alone. They are beginning to trust
again.
The Parolees now understand what it
means to be assertive and mindful of
the choices they make on a daily basis.
The families have also accepted to
help parolees get acceptance in the
community.
BY FAROUK ULUEME
As a facilitator of this programme I have come to
value the importance of this programme from
firsthand experience. First and most importantly
is that it has helped me in understanding the
unique challenges in each of these forty families I
have visited – each family bi-weekly. However, it
will be imperative to share with you in this report
the following:
CHALLENGES - THE CURSE OF CRIME
Each week I visit a minimum of 20 different
families / 40 over 2 weeks. I have had firsthand
experience of the various challenges they face
within the family in particular and in the
community in general. These include the level of
poverty, hunger, poor state of living etc. living etc.
which 95% of them refer to as the main curse of
crime because at the end of the day there needs
to be food on the table and the perpetrator of
these crimes are generally the breadwinner of the
family, without a paid job (mainly because of their
criminal record). This is according to the family
members.
LIVING CONDITIONS: I observed within these past
months that families of parolees live under dire
living conditions that are not healthy and
conducive to live in. Often families regard this as
the reason why parolees commit crime.
23. IDENTIFIED HEALING

INGREDIENTS IN CHANGE:

UNDERSTANDING
PERCEPTION: Other challenges include the fact that
parolees are regarded as dangerous criminals that
should be avoided within the family and in the
community as well. This has brought about a very low
self esteem in the lives of the parolees and thereby
lacking the assertiveness to refrain from negative peer
pressure.
REJECTION: Parolees are rejected in their families and
within the society at large and this creates a low self
esteem in the lives of the parolees. This rejection they
claim is the reason why they have to belong to any
family that is willing to accept them and the prison is just
the perfect place for them to be. However the only way
to get there is to commit a deliberate crime.
LACK OF TRUST: I found it very difficult in the beginning
to get through to their families in terms of open
communication. A large percentage of them had locked-
up emotions and were not willing to share of their
challenges with the parolees or with the community.
Basically, I was also first seen as part of their challenges
but that was quick to change as with each bi-weekly visit
they began to trust me more - opening up.
LACK OF UNITY AND LOVE: I have observed that some
families lack unity and love as they were either at
loggerhead with one another or just lack that care for
one another as a family.
UNWILLINGNESS comes from not knowing differently. I
have observed that parolees are not always willing to
find alternative ways of living other than crime. An
example is one parolee who committed cable theft.

24. Guidance begins with Self Guidance. This is Farouk...
Farouk knows that life after prison is a task that is not to be taken lightly. With a strong toolbox
from his own personal experience he offers qualified and valuable support to families of parolees.
“Today, with each breath of love that I take, I feel a light in me that shines so beautifully. I sense
an inspiration that is capable of catapulting the potentials of today’s youth to a whole new
positive dimension. In my moments of change, I have come to learn that when we make that
golden choice of transformation into a being that shimmers light, love and joy through the heart
of other, then it is not uncommon for us to shine brilliantly to the world. It is this light that will
attract the most wonderful people who want to partner with us on this crusade of change.
At this moment of our lives, the past would not again be a thing of regret, but moments of
gratitude for lessons we learnt along the way. We would no longer be referred to as ex-offenders
but as shining lights that are resourceful in the building of a caring and loving society. We would
not be referred to as irresponsible, but as RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUALS.
As responsible individuals who are in touch with their feelings, who understand how meaningful
challenges could be, who understand that the bringing of pain to another is automatically the
bringing of pain to oneself. For as uniquely physically different as we might look, a responsible
individual knows that we are all in one and one in all. This is what the journey has taught me.”
OBJECTIVE 2012/13 We continue to provide support to families of parolees. We are very keen
on the idea of ‘half-way houses’ for parolees – a six months educational bridge back into society!

OUTCOME
A stunning year where each of the 10 youth community
builders have attended to their own personal journey –
deepening themselves in their values, their key roles and their
mission in life – aligning themselves with their families and
their community, with each situation and task given to them.
There is a deep appreciation within the team for each other
and an openness to share and care. We have experienced
how each one has stepped into the wonderful resource they
are – having a zest for life and a willingness and eagerness to
step into the playground of endless possibilities – pursuing
their goals.
Our team has run the NYANGA GOT TALENT SHOW, five
attended TEAM ENTREPRENEUR WORKSHOP and one went to
CHRYSALIS ACADEMY for three months.

29. I joined the SmilingOne
Foundation last year in July.
That day I was supposed to
perform at the arts centre
next to the Nyanga Crèche.
I still remember passing by
when a friend of mine MoreD
called me to join their circle.
When I turned to their side
after hearing the call
everybody was smiling at me.
It eased my heart to be
around them. I felt welcome
and received warm hugs and
pure loving smiles. The time
came for a moment of silence
and that very minute I felt
something happening to my
life.
I got invited to come and join
next week’s workshop and
was so excited because of the
love I had received. Saturday
came and I joined the big
SmilingOne family again.
Earlier in 2011 I had tried to
commit suicide. The
SmilingOne Foundation was
the perfect place to be . I was
so depressed and emotionally
challenged.
What I knew from the bottom
of my heart was that I needed
help but I did not know if I
anyone could help me with
the disease I was facing - my
depression. My faith in life
was so little and I was not as
driven as I was before the
suicide.
Through SmilingOne I was
introduced to The Responsible
Individual (I am still smiling).
Wow that book changed me
and the way I looked at life
and also how I looked at
people. Weeks and months
passed and my life began to
change. I got an opportunity
to be guided through the book
and learned about life as a
responsible individual. The
book does not give you the
answers but offers windows
on how can you can be the
greatest in this life time...
Ever since I joined the
foundation everything about
me has changed! I am now
Bukiwe who is more
responsible, who feels ok
with being sensitive and who
is so eager to see change in
our
our communities.
SmilingOne has been the
greatest gift in my life. Now I
can stand in front of the
mirror and say: “This is me
and I love this winner that I
am seeing right now.”
Through the book I have
learnt that everything
happens for a reason and
never to put yourself as
second best... coz I am the
best! I do not imagine my life
without The Responsible
Individual book as it carries so
much wealth to the world.
I am also a singer and I got an
opportunity to showcase my
talent along with the likes of
Paul Abro, Tina Schouw and
Lionel Bastos. That for me was
the greatest gift ever and I
learnt from and shared an
amazing event - our
30. amazing event - our SmilingOne Benefit
Concert and there are still more to come!
The Foundation has changed my life cause
now there is nothing that can bring me down.
Yes, I do allow moments of doubts to take over
as I through those moments learn and grow so
much more. SmilingOne has helped me to be
more appreciative and value my life and my
learning.
I am so grateful also for the kids who inspire
and teach me so much . Being with them every
single Saturday reminds me of my vision. I am
reminded of the change that I want to see in
our community and how this vision can
become true, through helping and shaping our
leaders of tomorrow.
Working with the kids touches my life deeply. I
see the different backgrounds that exist, the
love and rejection they face. I can relate. I
experience all of it so intensely.
When they are with us it is like they can be
with us till forever and it does at times become
hard when it is time to go home. They often
ask me if I can come and live with them. In
those moments I realise how much we/I mean
to the child.
I feel that the change we want to see is
happening and that we are able to turn this
dream into reality. The learning village will
help change so many young and old lives. It
will bring hope and love to people. Many are
so angry out there because of hunger and
rejection...
This SmilingOne Family is the best and I am so
fortunate that am part of it and looking
forward to being part of the change!
Thank you Karina and Meeghan for being the
best mothers and mentors in my life....
Much Love
Bukiwe
31. Ever since I joined the
Foundation everything
about me has changed. I am
now Bukiwe who is more
responsible, who feels ok
with being sensitive and
who is eager to see the
change in our communities.
33. EARLY
INTERVENTION
by Meeghan Norwitz
“Many of my Saturdays are filled up
with the bright wide smiley faces of
the children and youth of Nyanga.
Our workshops are run by our team,
which is made up of committed and
dedicated young adults who have a
great desire to change the way things
are in their community.
They begin with themselves
attending sessions each Saturday
afternoon with The Responsible
Individual, deepening their journeys,
finding meaning, unlocking their
potential and truly evolving into
shining beacons of light.
Their journeys are availed for each other to help
each other grow and evolve. They learn from each
other’s challenges, they take ownership of their
thoughts and feelings and are true bearers of light, a
light within that they know they have and willingly
pass onto others.
They are the examples the children look up to, the
ones the children share with, play with and learn
from! The team gives of their time freely to help
feed the children not only with a nourishing meal but
also to feed them spiritually with love, care, and
friendship. A morning could begin with a moment
of silence a quietening, a time to breathe to bring
our attention to the circle guided by whoever feels
the calling to do so. Groups are then formed where
the children are assisted and encouraged to dance,
sing, draw, and showcase something that they’d like
to.
There is much laughter, and busyness, and the
smallest little hand I suddenly feel being gently
brushed on my cheek or combed through my hair.
There is a lot of hugging and cuddling. The older
children enjoy high five-ing and a word of loving
encouragement leaves a smile that is carried with
them for the rest of the day.”
This is what we call early intervention; a place to
be, to be you, to be loved, to be allowed, a place of
sharing and caring, of fun and happiness, where
there is no judgement, no labels, a place where we
can gently learn and grow from each other!!!”

EVENTS
41. THE NYANGA LEARNING VILLAGE
Our CIRCLE OF CHANGE approach and the ingredient of THE RESPONSIBLE
INDIVIDUAL has proven to be a huge success in diverse and disadvantaged
communities. Once we find our VOICE - which is to be found and discovered within -
we can inspire others through our own living example.
Our VOICE is one of gratitude, love and appreciation for life (the journey) and
everyone we meet on our path. Everything is meaningful, every challenge a gift, each
mountain a mentor and in the deepest of seas we discover our potential.
With THE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL a platform has been shaped through the past 20
months in Nyanga. This is from where we can share, care and embrace the wonderful
resource that each one of us holds within – our potential.
It starts with a better ME for a better WE.
We look forward to take our shared VISION into ACTION!
We are building our LEARNING VILLAGE!
We continue to NURTURE and DEVELOP the Nyanga & Surrounding

OUR
FINANCIAL
REPORT
One of our great achievements in 2011/12
has been our perseverance through a
financially challenging year and our heartfelt
commitment to all our processes, our
beneficiaries and to ourselves! We have
turned the challenge into an opportunity for
growth and learning – we have expanded
our team and our outreach.
FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT POLICY
The SmilingOne Foundations financial management is done in terms of the South African Auditing
standards and audited financial statements are available. External auditors provide oversight and
monitoring. The SmilingOne Foundations auditors are: HG PAGE and Company Practice No
964700.
One of our focuses this year has been to invite
more sponsors and partners in community
building. Rehabilitation/Re-Integration is an
investment! We (SmilingOne) double the
return on this investment as we activate a full
circle of change utilizing rehabilitated and re-
integrated potential for crime diversion and
prevention processes in our challenged
communities. We fully understand our value-
add.
We are deeply grateful for the continuous
support of THORP MOTORGROUP who assist
us with a sponsored vehicle which has been
renewed twice during the financial year and
branded with SmilingOne Logo in December.
We are also very excited about the buy-in from
government at the end of our financial year
(last quarter) which ensured a four month DSD
funded project – December 2011 to March
2012 - fuelling our prison portfolio and
assisting expansion into parolee and family
support. It has also helped us with job creation
for 5 of our team members of which 2 are ex-
offenders living a life of inspiring change and
being the change.
We are in urgent need of more funding!
We have kept our operational costs at a
minimum – only 15%. We ensure at all times
that funding has maximum impact!
