About money
Money rules the world. Or as famous banker Mayer
Anselm Rothschild puts it: “Permit me to issue and
control money of a nation and I care not who makes
its laws.“ In a market economy, money is the decisive
factor to realize projects and businesses, to realize
how we live. Money enables and initiates, it makes
activities possible. Without money, we cannot live
our lives today. However, accepting money as our
ruler, we tend to forget that money is actually made
by us. Without human beings, money would not
exist. So, who decides how money rules the world?
At the 4th International Summer School on Social Banking, we want to reflect on where the money
in our societies actually goes. Through money, investments and loans, we shape our economy and
our society. So we have to ask ourselves: What is it that is financed? How are the investment
decisions taken? Who takes them? What are the rules of the game and who sets these? How can
we influence where the money goes?
Who rules the money?
Some of the planned topics
Every International Summer School on Social Banking introduces Social Banking and Finance in
general and in addition focuses on a main topic; in 2011: “Money rules the world – who rules the
money?”. Under this motto, we will raise awareness on our abilities to design money and by this,
design society.
The following topics will be covered specifically:
• What is money?
• Growth and Size (economic growth, organisational growth/size)
• Reporting and Measuring Social and Environmental impact
• Regulation: (How) can there be a “one size fits all” banking regulation?
• Competences of “the Social Banker”: What does Social Banking look like in terms of skills and
career opportunities?
• Social Banking and Social Enterprise: How is the relationship?
• Best practices of Social Banking and Social Finance
• Potential for Change

Target Group
The International Summer School on Social Banking thrives from the creative atmosphere that is
ensured by a good diversity in its participants. The interdisciplinary approach is also reflected in the
mix of its participants being both practitioners and scholars.

How – the methods
The Summer School is designed to be an incubator for change. Therefore, it is not a place for pure
ex‐cathedra teaching, but includes many creative methods.

How to apply
By December 2010, you can find an application form online at www.social‐banking.org/summer‐
school/summer‐school‐2011/. Please be aware that you we will select the participants based on
this form. You will be able to find the transparent criteria online.
Deadline for application: 15 April 2011.
Deadline for early‐bird applications: 15 February 2011.
Fee
The participation fees can be paid in £ (Great Britain Pounds) or € (Euros). As soon as we confirmed
your participation, please let us know in which currency you would like to pay and we send you the
respective bank account details.
The fee includes board (organic, fair trade and local where possible)!
Participants have to arrange their travel and accommodation (see logistics section below).

Logistics
Date: 3rd to 8 July 2011 (Start on 3rd July at 4 PM, End on 8 July at 4 PM).
Place: Canterbury Cathedral Lodge, Canterbury, UK (www.canterburycathedrallodge.org/).
Board: Organic board is included in the conference fee.
Lodging: Participants book their own accommodation. We have reserved all rooms of the Lodge
and provide special conditions with several hotels and student lodges.
Travel: Canterbury is about 1 hour by train from London. We encourage all participants arriving
from Europe to travel by Eurostar, arriving in London at St. Pancras International.

The organisers
The International Summer School on Social Banking 2011 is a project by the Institute for Social
Banking (www.social‐banking.org) in collaboration with Charity Bank (www.charitybank.org).
About the Summer School
The International Summer School on Social Banking is one of the central recurring projects of the
Institute for Social Banking (ISB), education and research. It has taken place every two years since
its first edition in Germany in 2006 (organised by the GLS Treuhand).
Each Summer School takes place in the home country of one of the ISB’s member institutions
(www.social‐banking.org/en/the‐institute/member‐organisations) to bring the international Social
Banking and Finance approach to as many countries as possible. In 2008, the ISB co‐operated with
Merkur Bank in Denmark and in 2010, Banca Etica was the partner. Since the demand for
participating at the Summer School was extraordinarily high in 2010, it has now been decided to
organise a Summer school on a yearly basis.
In 2011, Charity Bank hosts the Summer School in the UK.
Goals
The Summer School provides a unique opportunity for interested and engaged people to meet and
develop new perspectives on banking and finance.
Within the Summer School, we
• create awareness for the role of banks in society and the economy,
• present cases and best practices of already existing socially oriented banks and banking
products,
• question the personal relationship to money and the present banking system,
• offer spaces for creative and solution‐oriented discussions on banking and finance and their role
in society,
• critically reflect on the concepts and ideas behind socially oriented banking.
