Katy Perry's Teenage Dream Album Cover Deconstructed
1.
2. Setting
• The setting of this album appears to be clouds
made from candyfloss. This directly links to
the album name ‘Teenage Dream’, due to the
fact she is in the clouds and dreaming Is often
referred to as having ‘your head in the clouds’.
3. Characters
• The protagonist of the music video is Katy Perry. She is using direct
address which makes a personal connection with the audience.
• She is seen wearing nothing but ‘candyfloss’ therefore she is using
her sexuality as her appeal.
• Katy Perry’s hair is jet black which, in contrast to her pale skin, holds
links to Snow White and therefore makes her character seem
mythical and magical.
• The image of Katy Perry where she is lay face down on the ‘clouds’
makes her appear youthful and innocent as her feet are pointing to
the sky. This pose is the stereotypical pose for a teenage girl who is
trying to look ‘cute’, again making links to the title of ‘Teenage
Dream’
• The title ‘Teenage Dream’ suggests that she is and adult, wishing
that she was a teenager again.
4. Narrative Events
• The album is conceptual due to us knowing
nothing about Katy Perry’s character.
• Also, she is in ‘candyfloss clouds’ which have no
relevance to the rest of the CD cover as we would
say they are a figment of Perry’s imagination.
• Finally, the rest of the Digipack has images of
sweets (primary colours being red, white and
pink to appear girly). They also have no relevance
to the title or Perry’s character.
5. Iconography
• There is minimal use of iconography in the Katy
Perry on the digipack.
• There are direct links to Snow White, who holds
the iconic portrayal of purity and innocence.
• The use of the colour pink is iconic for girls and
female youth, it also has strong connotations or a
Barbie doll. This creates a strong illusion that Katy
Perry is a teenage girl, linking in to the title of
‘Teenage Dream’
6. Technical Codes
• Katy Perry is using direct address by looking
straight at the camera lens which captures the
audiences attention by creating a personal
relationship with the audience member. This the
pulls the audience into Katy Perry’s world.
• The lighting is high key which highlights Katy
Perry’s face and makes her appear more
desirable and Barbie-like.
• The text is written co-operates with the blue, red
and pink theme of the digipack which continues
the theme of female youth.
