Design 1 Inspiration.

Kilden Performing Arts centre

When setting out upon my design
research. I came across a building
called the Kilden Performing Arts
centre in Kristiansand in Norway.
I liked the way the front of the
building protrudes across the
front of the street. This would
provide a n Iconic landmark for
the local Fox street area.
Providing striking images from the
main view points highlighted in
my previous site analysis.
I wanted to take inspiration from
its use of Glass, steel cladding and
also Copper cladding. The Copper
cladding I thought would work
well at Fox street, complimenting
the nearby St Mary of the Angels
Church.
With further research I then came across
The Vache Noire shopping centre is A
landmark retail building with a green
heart.
The Vache Noir makes good use of space.
Incorporating a lot of outdoor green
space which provides a communal garden
area.
It also benefits from an underground car
park.

The Vache Noire shopping centre is on a
sloped site and therefore largely
underground, to allow for the creation of a
public garden on the roof of the building.
The large gently sloped garden, covering the
shopping centre, rises towards the south and
is easily accessible from the surrounding
streets, and the public areas of the town of
Arcueil. It offers the community a green
haven right in the middle of the town centre.
Vache Noire is made up of two main levels of
shops together with two other partial levels
with a food and leisure offer, all located
above three levels of the underground car
park.
The northern part of the project is bordered
by a housing development of eight terraced
levels overlooking the public garden to the
south.

The Vache Noire shopping centre Paris
This is a image to show how I could take inspiration from la Vache Noir. I've showed
how I think it would work on the site of the proposed Fox street development.
With a smaller in scale design and a couple of slight adjustments, I think this would
work.
I like the way it has a lot of open green space. I could use this to my advantage and use
it to bring the community and my building together. It could also be used to link the
nearby Faith Primary school to my building.
Design 1 Thought process
Initial idea

First idea of building, with  pointed
part of building  pointing out at corner
of fox street and Richmond row.

Green roof installed
Wooden panelling on the side of the building
Glass foyer to create light and airy
space inside reception
Support pillar on the other side of the road

Support pillar to be on the
other side of the road to create
a tunnel effect and to allow the
traffic along Fox street to flow
underneath the roof of the
building.
Design 1 Site plan
View of the
roof would be
similar to my
installation

In my design process, I've decided to go against
the idea of an underground car  park and
instead to place the car parking space adjacent
to the building.
I've added some Architectural plants and some
trees on to the site to break up the the view of
the car park. I think Red maple trees would be a
good addition to the north west corner of the
site because it would have a good backdrop of
the church behind it. The church is brown in
colour so they would compliment each other.

This is a cross section of the type of green roof that I will be
installing on my building.
Green roof installation has many  advantages such as
absorbing rainwater, providing insulation, creating a habitat
for wildlife, and helping to lower urban air temperatures
and mitigate the heat island effect.
Design 1 Elevations
This is my first idea of how the floor plan of building 1 would look.
Energy Efficient lighting

Design 1 Materials

If you replace a traditional light bulb
with a compact fluorescent bulb of the
same brightness you will typically save
around £3 per year, or £55 over the
life of the bulb

Green Roof "Nature Roof“
High diversity of flora and fauna species.
Green roofing with high ecological value.
Habitat for wild bees and butterflies.
Long lasting and colourful blooming effect.
Use of recycled materials.

Marley Cedral weather board
(see below left)

MARLEY, Cedral weatherboard
For the wooden external cladding I would
use Marley Cedral weatherboard. It has
excellent aesthetics,  it is resistant to rot,
Low maintenance, Easy to install.it can be
used in the same manner as wood, and it
withstands even the harshest weather
conditions..

For the steel structure
FABSEC® beams are used for primary and secondary
floor beams and rafters. They can be fire engineered
and designed as composite or non‐composite
elements with typical floor spans of 8‐24 metres and
roof spans of up to 60 metres.

TATA Steel, Structural Hollow
Sections
Steel hollow sections are the most
versatile and efficient form for
construction and mechanical
applications. Many of the strongest
and most impressive structures in the
world today would not have been
possible without hollow sections.
The Pilkington Planar™ system
is a fully engineered system which
has been rigorously tested. The
Pilkington Planar™ system utilises a
combination of glass and high grade
316 stainless steel fittings which
when combined with a countersunk
hole can attain a flush façade with
very little distortion.
Design 2 Thought Process

Fig 1.

On research interesting architecture for the design of my building. I
came across Sir Norman Fosters glass dome that’s sits on top of the
Reichstag, the German Parliament building in Berlin.

Elevation

On looking at figure 1. I thought that the
glass dome of the Reichstag could pass as
a stand alone building on its own merit.

Floor plan
Fig 2.

I then thought about using this as my inspiration. What if I could
enclose my building inside a glass dome. I could then use the space
inside the dome as a kind of enclosed neighbourhood.

View of site from Fox
street showing building

structure
Design 2, Views and site Plan

Building to sit
inside dome
Design 2 Materials
For the glass used in the building. I am going to stick with
the Pilkington Planar system.
Incorporates most of the vast array of Pilkington glass
types including solar control, low‐e and screen printed
glass as well as Pilkington Activ™ Self‐cleaning glass.

Double sided rainscreen
cladding.
With a black finish to provide a
sleek, stylish finish to the
building.

Standard River rock for
landscaping.
Used with a heavy
grade landscape fabric
to keep rock from
sinking into soil and
helps prevent weeds.

High strength concrete
would be used in the
construction of the floor,
steps and the concrete
support pillars.

Ornamental Grasses
You can convert part of your lawn to
a display of ornamental grasses.
These grasses are low maintenance
and grow well in most soils. They
seldom require fertilizer, and have
few pest and disease problems.
Design 3 thought Process
I was inspired by this picture of a
melting ice cube. I noticed the
puddle that it had made
underneath the shape and I
thought that it would be good to
use that as the footprint of the
building. Possibly the car park?

Tehran stock exchange

I then decided that I was going to manipulate my cube shaped building.
I wanted to do more to it than just have a plain cube in the middle of a
square site.
I then decided to turn it around on its head and slice one side of it
away to create a glass  viewing platform. This would provide great
views over the city of Liverpool.
Once I had come up with  a design that I was happy with. I then started
to look and see if there was any similar buildings around.
I came across plans for the Tehran stock exchange that looked a lot like
the shape of my building.
Design 3, Views and Site plan

Fig 2 looking from St Anne Street

Fig 1. How building would look when walking
along Fox street

East elevation

This is an aerial site plan and the footprint of my building
Design 3 Materials

For the glass viewing platform, I
would use the Pilkington Planar
glass, as highlighted in Design 1

Double sided Colorcoat Prisma® is ideally suited for
rainscreen applications where in addition to the external
face and cut edges, increased protection is provided at
the reverse side to deal with the micro climate between
the rainscreen and the building wall.

Small Pea Gravel,
Pea gravel consists of small, smooth,
rounded stones used to create
aggregate concrete surfaces. Also may
be used as a walking or driving surface.

For the main frame construction of the building and
the support pillars for the building, I will use the TATA
Steel, Structural Hollow Sections as highlighted in
design 1.
The reason for this is that they are the most versatile
and efficient form for construction and mechanical
applications. Many of the strongest and most
impressive structures in the world today would not
have been possible without hollow sections.

Support pillars will be similar to the
ones used I the construction of the
Tom Reilly Building at the Byrom street
campus.
