2. • Autoimmunity is a condition in which
structural or functional damage is produced by
the action of immunologically competent cells
or Ab against self antigen.
• The body is normally able to distinguish its
own self antigens from foreign non-self
antigens and does not mount an immunogenic
attack against itself. This phenomenon is called
immune tolerance.
3. • Immune tolerance mechanism are separated
into two categories:
1. Central tolerance:
a) Receptor editing
b) Clonal deletion
2. Peripheral tolerance:
a) Clonal anergy or inactivation
7. • Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune
condition, which means it's caused by the
immune system attacking healthy body
tissue.
• It attacks the synovium, the tissue lining
around a joint that produces a fluid to help
the joint move smoothly. The inflamed
synovium gets thicker and makes the joint
area feel painful and tender and look red and
swollen, and moving the joint may be difficult.

10. • Acquired
immunodeficiency
syndrome (AIDS) is a
chronic, potentially
life-threatening
condition caused by
the human
immunodeficiency
virus (HIV). By
damaging your
immune system, HIV
interferes with your
body's ability to fight
infection and disease.
• HIV is a sexually
transmitted infection
(STI).
11. Antigens/Immunogens:
• Antigens are the foreign substances or
molecules which, when enters the body
triggers the production of antibodies.
• Also can be defined as any substance or
molecule that can bind to specific antibody or
specific antigen receptors on lymphocytes.
