years, Zoroaster left his homeland to find people who would listen to
him.
➢ His journey led him to the kingdom of Bactria (present-day

10. Practices
➢ Penance involves reciting the patet, committing to not
sin again, and confessing sins to a dastūr or priest. The
main ceremony, Yasna, involves offering haoma to the
sacred fire, along with other offerings. The fire must be
kept burning continually and prayers are recited five
times a day. Establishing a new fire involves a complex
ceremony, and there are additional rituals for fire
purification and regeneration.

11. Rituals
➢ All young Parsis must be initiated when they reach the
age of seven (in India) or 10 (in Persia). They receive the
shirt (sadre) and the girdle (kusti), which they are to
wear their whole life.
➢ There are three types of purification, with increasing
importance: padyab, which involves ablution; nahn,
which requires a bath; and bareshnum, a elaborate
ritual performed at specific places and involving a dog.
During bareshnum, the candidate touches the left ear
of the dog, whose gaze is believed to ward off evil
spirits, and the ritual typically spans several days.

12. Reflection
Dawson- i found this religion quite odd, Especially their practices and rituals. I found
it interesting how by the time they hit the ages 7-10 there are given the clothes
there are supposed to wear for the rest of their lives.
Olivia - I thought it was interesting how scholars think it influenced christianity. I
disagree with this because a lot of details seem to be missing about zoroastrianism.
Which is the complete opposite of Christianity, which has such a strong foundation.
I found it interesting how it spread and for it being one of the oldest religions, not
many people follow it.
Noah- I really enjoyed learning about the elongated history, and the changes in
belief over the years. I also really like the idea of all of creation being restored and
purified at the end of times. It’s quite nice.
