TRANSPORT
Most U.K. freight and passengers travel by road (60 %). A network of main A-class
roads and motorways link the cities. A very important motorway is the M-25 which encircles
London at a radius of 15-20 miles from the centre. A well known junction is the “ Spaghetti
Junction near Birmingham.
Fewer passengers and less freight are being carried by train because of the
competition from road. Uneconomic routes will be closed. The passenger railway network
now mainly serves the big cities. Inter-City routes now use high-speed diesel and electric
trains.
Freightlines are trains that carry containers around the country. The containers fit on
ships, on trains and on lorries.
AIRLINES, PIPELINES AND SHIPPING LINES
FLYING is the fastest and dearest way to travel. Business passengers, post and urgent freight
often travel by air.
Flights inside the U.K. are called domestic flights. There are plenty of British airports
which are used mainly for domestic flights: Manchester, Liverpool, Belfast, Edinburgh,
Glasgow, Birmingham. London has four airports:Heathrow ( 75 million passengers in 2015);
Gatwick are international airports, Luton and Stansted are mainly domestic.
PIPELINES are the best way to move liquid or gas from place to place (crude oil and refined
products are moved in this way). Most homes have North Sea natural gas which comes
through a network of pipelines.
SHIPPING is the cheapest way of carrying bulk cargoes. Containerization has revolutionized
world shipping.
The big British ports developed in the estuaries of the Thames, Mersey, Humber,
Severn, and Southampton Water. Liverpool has a wide hinterland ( land behind the port to
which it distributes imports and is supplied with exports).
Dover is an artificial harbour. It has become the most important passenger port and the
most important port for container traffic.

TRANSPORT

Liverpool, Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Birmingham. Londra are patru aeroporturi:Heathrow
Containerizarea a revoluționat transportul maritim mondial.
