Hunger Around The World

Hunger is the physical sensation of desiring food. Throughout history, a
large proportion of the world's population have often experienced severe
hunger. In many cases this resulted from disruptions to the food supply
caused by war, plagues or adverse weather changes.
Hunger Facts

 According to the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of
the United Nations) news release on 14 September 2010, 925
million people do not have enough to eat - more than the
populations of USA, Canada and the European Union.
 98 percent of the world's hungry live in developing countries.
 65 percent of the world's hungry live in only seven countries:
India, China, the Democratic Republic of
Congo, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan and Ethiopia.
 According to the Community Food Survey conducted by Food
for All (local youth group), almost 12000 households in
Singapore currently rely on supplementary food rations -
dried food packets or cooked meals - in the country.
Hunger Effects

 Number One Risk to Health - Today, almost one person in six
does not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active
life, making hunger and malnutrition the number one risk to
health worldwide - greater than AIDS, malaria and
tuberculosis combined. As well as the obvious sort of hunger
resulting from an empty stomach, there is also the hidden
hunger of micronutrient deficiencies which make people
susceptible to infectious diseases, impair physical and mental
development, reduce their labour productivity and increase
  the risk of premature death.
 Economic Repercussions - Hunger does not only weigh on the
individual. It also imposes a crushing economic burden on the
developing world. Economists estimate that every child whose
physical and mental development is stunted by hunger and
malnutrition stands to lose 5-10 percent in lifetime earnings.
Hunger Actions

 Action Against Hunger (ACF International) - AAH is
a global humanitarian organization committed to
ending world hunger. Recognized as a leader in the
fight against malnutrition, ACF works to save the
lives of malnourished children while providing
communities with access to safe water and
sustainable solutions to hunger. With 30 years of
expertise in emergency situations of conflict, natural
disaster, and chronic food insecurity, ACF runs life-
saving programs in over 40 countries benefitting
some five million people each year.
Hunger Actions

 Hunger 500 - Joseph Henry, a Master's of Public Health
(MPH) Candidate at the University of Alabama at
Birmingham (UAB), started a run to raise awareness on
hunger and poverty issues. Joseph and his team began a
17-day run on February 9, 2011, starting from the White
House in Washington, DC to the 6th Annual Universities
Fighting World Hunger Summit at the University of
Guelph in Ontario, Canada. World Vision Famine Camp -
The 30-Hour Famine is an international, hunger-fighting
programme which began in the United States in
1992, and is sponsored by World Vision. The Famine is
aimed at empowering young people all over the world to
raise funds and heighten public awareness in a collective
effort to help eradicate world hunger and poverty.
How individuals can join the fight against
              World Hunger

 1. Donation
 There are many ways you can donate to help fight
hunger around the world: Make a one-time online
donation, set-up automatic monthly donations, make
a donation in honor of a loved one, through planned
giving, by transfering stock, or by donating a vehicle.
How individuals can join the fight against
               World Hunger
 2. Fundraising
 Many of our supporters approach us asking what they
can do, beyond a simple donation – the answer is
harnessing the collective giving power of your
friends, family, and co-workers, and simultaneously
spreading awareness of Action Against Hunger and the
important work we’re doing worldwide. We’ve built a
special platform for you, called My Action Against
Hunger to sign up to take YOUR action against hunger.
 Whatever you’re doing—hosting an event, running a
marathon, or celebrating a birthday—you have the
capacity to be an incredible fundraiser.
