Stephen created a fitness promotional video and received peer feedback on it. The feedback praised aspects like the professional intro animation, variety of shots and exercises, and well-chosen music. Suggested improvements included improving some overexposed shots through colour grading, and pushing the colour grading further to make the video more creative. Stephen agreed with feedback about colour grading but disagreed about adding sound effects to transitions, feeling it would clash. The feedback was constructive and will help Stephen improve technical and aesthetic qualities for future projects.
3. Research
Overall, my research helped me to build the idea for my product and helped me
to gather ideas and techniques. In my research I looked at different ideas that
were similar to what I wanted to make. I looked at various different elements in
each product such as, location, effects, post production, lighting, costume, props,
colours, fonts and audience appeal. Annotating and looking at the different
elements helped me to get some ideas and techniques that I could use in my own
product. For example I looked at different shot types and how they could be used
to help the audience or show the audience something. In the Anthony Joshua
promotional video long shots and close ups were used to show the audience how
to do the exercise and then what muscles the exercise would target. This engages
the target audience as they will be able to see technique and detail. I used some
of these types of shots in my product to appeal to my target audience and give
them the best experience. One way that I could have improved my research more
would be looking at a wider range of promotional content. For example looking at
more videos promoting other themes than just fitness to see if there are anymore
techniques to promote products and appeal to a target audience.
4. Research comparison
The style on the left is what I used as inspiration. I used the same exercise but a different
angle. I tried to use the side profile angle but it did not look as good as the front profile
angle did. The lighting in the existing product is a lot sharper and cleaner than my
product. This is due to the colour grading. In future I will think about my colour grading
more and try to push the grade even harder and experiment with colour more. Doing
this would make my product look a lot more professional and could push my skills
further.
6. Planning
Overall my planning went well and helped me to produce a good quality product.
One of the things that helped me to produce my product was a shot list. With the
use of a shot list I was able to get all the shots that I had planned in a good order.
This gave me more time to make sure the shot was correct and I could go straight
onto the next shot straight away as I didn’t need to think about what shot I was
going to do. I also colour coded the list so that I could see the different equipment
I needed for each shot. For example I had one colour to show which shots were
done with a gimbal and another colour to show which were done as handheld.
This helped a lot as I could do all the gimbal shots together and then all the
handheld shots after. Doing this meant that I didn’t have to waste time taking the
camera off the gimbal and putting it back on and having to rebalance it. Another
part of planning that helped me was writing a production schedule. The schedule
helped me to break up my production process well from planning to shooting and
editing. Using this, I was able to plan my full production process and plan what I
was doing at what day. This saved me lots of time and I was able to separate the
production up and make it in stages. One thing I could have done better would be
a more detailed storyboard. I could have been a lot more detailed with the exact
shot types, size, length and scene length. This would have given me a more visual
idea of what the shots could look like and I could have planned them in more
detail to make my product look more professional.
7. Time Management
Overall, I think I managed my time well over the course of production. I was able to do this
due to my planning of production schedule, shots and locations. The planning of these
elements helped me to save lots of time on the day of shooting. For example planning all
the shots and locations, prior to the shooting day, helped me to go straight into filming
without having to decide what and where I wanted to film on the spot. Planning the
production schedule also helped me save time as I had a set plan and time for pre
production and post production. This helped to save time as I could go straight into what
was planned for that week without getting confused or running out of time. On the other
hand I did have some things that slowed my production process down. For example, when I
was editing in premiere pro I was using some heavy glitch effects and colours. I lost time on
this because if I wanted to preview the effect I had edited I had to use the in and out keys
around the clip and render everything inside in to out. If the effect wasn’t right or the
timing was off then I had to change it and render it again. I got around this issue by leaving
all the heavy effects and grading to the end and then I could render it all at once. Another
issue I encountered that slowed me down was towards the end some of my clips had
corrupted over the timeline of other important clips. The clips were merged together and
saved so I had to take out the corrupted clip and use another one I had shot. This slowed
me down because I had to put a new clip in (one that I didn’t previously want to use), cut it
it to the beat of the song and add the effects and colour grade in. This slowed me down the
most and I lost a lot of time because of it. If I had more time to work with I would have used
a lot more after effects to create some more text graphics and motion graphics. This would
have pushed my product more and made it look even more professional.
8. Time Management
This is the example of rendering everything from in to out. I rendered all of this at the end of
colour grading and effects. This render took about 8 minutes to complete. In this time I did
some more logo design and text graphics in after effects.
9. Technical Qualities- camera
Both shots have a part of the
frame covered by equipment.
Gives a nice frame split. Good
for masking transitions as well.
Both products use a
medium shot to show the
exercise clearly and to help
the audience.
Colour grades are similar.
Both are a cold temperature
colour grade that could
connotate grit, strength and
determination.
Personal branding
The video I researched had a cleaner and
more modern gym location. My product
was a bit less modern therefore it could
have made the audience feel like the video
is more aged than it is.
10. Technical Qualities- editing
In my video I used a few different glitch effects and transitions. I used these effects and
transitions because it worked well with the music and looked good. I used a glitch effect
preset pack that came with various different types of glitches and static effects/ transitions. I
experimented with all of the different glitches and noted down some of the best ones that
worked well with the tempo and music at the right time. I took inspiration from the existing
product on the right, which used a few similar effects. I think this type of transition works well
because it happens sharp and quickly so the audience can process that it was intentional but
they still question what it was. It also looks very nice and breaks up the video and makes it
look aesthetic and eye catching to the audience.
11. Aesthetic Qualities
I think that the overall style of my product looked good, was creative and was effective
in keeping the audience entertained and drawn to my product. I used lots of
techniques to make my product creative such as different types of camerawork and
editing. I used a variety of different shot types, angles and sizes to keep the flow of the
product fast and entertaining. I also used a variety of different transitions and effects. I
used lots of glitch effects and zoom effects. The zoom bounce effects worked well at
points in the music where a beat drops or dips in the music. This made my product
more creative and helped to push my creative boundaries. One thing that I could have
improved would be pushing the colour grading further to make the product look even
more aesthetic and change the colours in parts to get a variety of different grades for
the audience to look at.
12. Audience Appeal
I think that I have successfully appealed to my target audience and included many
elements that would attract them to interact with my product. I did this by researching
into audience interactions and how my target audience reacts to existing products
similar to my own. I looked at different media packs from Hearst’s Men’s Health and
Runners World. These media packs gave me information about how there audience
react to their different print products. After researching the media packs I found out
that my target audience react better to online products rather than print products.
After researching this I planned to make all my promotional content online to be able
to target my audience in the best way I can.

made the product feel very professional.
– I liked the glitch transitions as they made the video look
more aesthetic.
– Soundtrack went well with the video as it was fast paced
and had some nice drops.
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
– Some more work on the colours and white balance in
some shots. As they are too bright.
16. Feedback 3

– Different types of exercises and movements.
– Nice, professional looking motion graphics.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– Maybe add some sound effects to go with the
glitch transitions.
17. Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
– Improvements on white balance.
– Bumping up the colour grading to be more creative.
– Good, professional looking introduction animation.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
– Could have been faster paced and shorter.
– Add sound effects to go with the glitch transitions.
18. Peer Feedback Summary
Peer feedback gave me some good constructive criticism that helped me
think about my product as a whole and highlighted some factors I could work
on to have a better outcome. For example some of the changes I would make,
based on my feedback, would be improving some over exposed shots and
balance them out in colour grading. 2 out of 3 of my peer feedbacks gave this
as a thing that I could improve on and I agree as it does not look very
professional and can distract the audience and make them lose
concentration. Another change that I would make based on my audience
feedback would be to push the colour grading more and make some colours
stand out and sink in more. This would push my creativity and also make the
product look a lot more professional. One thing that I disagreed with from my
peer feedback was that I could have added some sound effects to go with the
glitch transitions. I disagreed with this comment because I thought that doing
this wouldn’t work with the style of the video and it would clash with the
soundtrack. Overall my peer feedback was useful and I got some good
constructive criticism that will make me think about these elements in future
projects.
