Many people seem to be getting “notices” in the mail that supposedly inform them that their VA loan had been included as part of the “economic stimulus program” and that they should call for more information about the VA IRRRL refinance program. Some of the letters also apparently have a VA loan number.
The VA IRRRL Refinance Program Is Not A Scam- The truth about the VA IRRRL program is that it is not a scam – it is a real opportunity for people who have a VA loan to refinance into a lower rate (when lower rates are available) and save money on their mortgage. The IRRRL refinance requires less documentation than when you originally got your VA loan, but it still requires a significant amount of documentation in order to complete the refinance process from your old loan into your new one.
What Are The Letters Then?- So if the IRRRL program isn’t a scam, then why the letters? Well, the letters are really just marketing pieces sent by the lender who sent them in an effort to get you to call them about the IRRRL program. Many Veterans will get the notices and call – which sends a signal to the lender that the letters “work” and have a high enough response rate that the lender keeps sending them out. It is possible that if at some point, enough people complain about the letter being misleading – that one of the government organizations that regulate the VA loan program will investigate the lender and possibly have them stop sending it out.
How To Spot a Scam- When it comes to the VA IRRRL program, there is one rule of thumb I use to spot a scam: did you seek the information out or did the information seek you out? If you received a “notice”, “alert” or anything like that in the mail or email – chances are it is just a misleading advertisement from a lender who wants you to call them. I suppose you could call this a “scam” – but as stated above, the IRRRL program isn’t a scam – it’s real. What is a little grey area is the marketing efforts of some lenders in an effort to get their phone to ring.
So if you got a letter in the mail informing you of some kind of stimulus package or something about your VA loan – be careful and treat it as what it most likely is: a marketing piece from a lender.
Get Multiple Quotes- If you are thinking about whether or not the VA IRRRL program can help improve your financial situation – the best thing you can do is to get multiple quotes from VA approved lenders who can help you understand whether or not it is right for you. The VA IRRRL is also sometimes called the VA streamline refinance and the program can only be administered by VA approved lenders. Not all lenders are VA approved.
