2. About DR. G. Venkataswamy
Born on 1st Oct, 1918 in Vadamalapuram, Tamilnadu, India.
He graduated with a B.A. in chemistry from American college, Madurai.
He received his medical degree from Stanley Medical College at Chennai in
1944.
In 1945, he joined the Indian Army as a physician.
In 1948, he was discharged due to arthritis.
In 1956, he joined the faculty at Madurai Medical College, later served as
Vice- Dean of the college.
Dr. V received the Padmashree award in 1973.
In 1971, Dr. V started Arvind Eye Care.
He died in 2006.

3. Introduction
 Started in 1976 as an 11-bed hospital in Madurai,
Headquarter : Madurai, Tamilnadu.
 Aravind now has branches at Theni, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, Pondicherry,
Dindigul and Tirupur.
 In the year ending March 2012, Aravind handled 2,838,689 outpatient
visits and performed 349,274 surgeries
 Aravind's surgeons conduct 2,000 operations a year, on an
average

 The Aravind eye care is believed to be the largest provider of eye
surgeries in the world conducting nearly 7 percent of all eye surgeries in
the world.
 Aravind accepts no government grants. The hospitals are
totally self-sustaining.

According to the Eye Bank Association of India, the number of
eyes collected in 2010 is 41,549.
Only a little more than 10,000 meet all the criteria of medical
standards.
Started in 1998 at Madurai with just a collection of 253 eyes.
Now Aravind Hospitals procure more than 4000 eyes and perform
about 1400 corneal transplants annually.

8. Aurolab, the manufacturing division of Aravind Eye Hospital,
In 1992, Aurolab was established as a non-profit charitable
trust for manufacturing ophthalmic consumables.
Aurolab manufactures a wide range of ophthalmic consumables
like intraocular lenses, pharmaceutical products like eye drops
Aurolab products are exported to 120 countries around the world
and acoounts for a total of 7.8% of global share of intraocular
lenses.

14. It trains mid-level ophthalmic personnel, mostly women from villages,
who are trained in a two-year course
These women never had the chance to go to college, now they get the
opportunity to enter the work stream as mid-tier technicians.
Surgeons perform six to eight operations per hour on an assembly line basis with the support of internally-
trained mid-level ophthalmic personnel.”
