In the work-centered world that we live in today, employees can more easily face burnout. Not only does this lead to detrimental mental, physical, and emotional health issues for the employee, it also has the potential to adversely impact the quality of their work, the work environment, and the overall business as a whole. This webinar covers risk factors that lead to burnout, how to identify burnout in employees, and how to mitigate the circumstances that can lead to burnout.

Many believe it’s the only way to prove you’re dedicated to your trade, or that advancing your technical knowledge can only be achieved by living with little sleep and ignoring other responsibilities. It’s what creates bias towards those who have families, other hobbies, or even those with mental issues who need time for self care. So how do you advance your development knowledge without wearing yourself out? This talk aims to guide the audience through what really matters when building technical skill. The audience will be left with a framework to help them navigate through what’s superfluous and what’s beneficial to learn without being prescriptive. Objective To give developers a framework for how to build their technical skill without selling their soul to development. Target Audience Junior and mid-level developers who are overwhelmed with how to get ahead, and those who don’t know where to concentrate their skill-learning efforts. Five Things Audience Members Will Learn Why the industry seems to value the overworked developer persona Ways to notice if you’re on the cusp of burnout How to identify which skills would benefit your growth the most How to make space to actually practice and research upcoming development trends The value of saying no

There is a fine line between stress and passion in the workplace. Both require extreme dedication, time and commitment, however, one is not pleasant, while the other, completes the reason for your existence. The term ‘burnout’ in the workplace suggests that people are tired of working to the point that they no longer want to continue at their current pace. We often consider burnout as a ‘bad thing’ in the workplace and overall that is correct, however, this can emanate from both a stressful position as well as a passionate position. According to of a comprehensive study conducted within the nursing ranks, there are three types of stress; eustress, distress and severe distress (i.e. burnout). Eustress is the kind of stress that generates either fear or excitement, often see to be ‘good stress.’ Distress is what we all think of when we speak of stress, the bad kind. Distress generates depression, sadness, and pessimism to name of few. Lastly, severe distress is extreme stress. This is the type of stress that causes emotional exhaustion to the point of coronary heart disease. Stress is no laughing matter and a very real issue in clinical operations. Arguably, organizations must address these issues intentionally and for multiple reasons. In this session, Tom Tonkin, Ph.D., Principal Consultant, Thought-Leadership and Advisory Services for Cornerstone on Demand, will discuss the challenges of dealing with both stress and passion in the workplace, both leading to staff burnout. He will go over the causes of stress in the clinical workplace as well as some struggles to help alleviate some of the issues.

According to a Mayo Clinic survey from 2012, nearly one in two U.S physicians reported at least one symptom of burnout, up from 22% in 2001. For hospitals with stressed caregivers, the stakes are high. Burned out, dissatisfied physicians are far more likely to make medical errors and are less able to communicate effectively with patients and co-workers. They're also at a higher risk for substance abuse and are more likely to leave clinical practice altogether.

Your voice, smiling, facial expressions, body language, and genuine Hospitality are tightly connected. Always strive to be a Hospitality service professional. The importance of Smiling is vital in the hospitality industry. People who were or are being raised and educated on digital devices have not had the opportunity to learn and use the necessary and multiple communication skills the way previous generations did. It's a lost art that needs to be presented to the generations that followed the Baby Boomers. These are the generations alive today: Generation X, Generation Y (Millennials), Generation Z, and Generation Alpha.

Software developers are intended to be massive, highly leverageable value creators for their companies and teams - using their creative and technical talent to build products themselves or mission-critical systems that facilitate the delivery of value inside the business. The blunt truth, however, is that many software developers would screw up tying their own shoes when left to their own devices. There's an abundant corpus of work out there on how managers routinely let down their software developers through insufficient planning, communication, listening, and support. In this talk we're going to explore the inverse - how individual software developers contributing to a project unintentionally sabotage their teams, their companies, their projects, and themselves through: * Immutable technical preferences + biases; * Bad attitudes; * Poor listening; * Inflexible and unproductive learning styles; * Risk aversion; * Incuriosity; * And more! Most importantly, in this talk we're going to try to address how we can help shift developers who want to learn and improve, but are have trouble executing, become the high value contributors they'd like to be.

This paper "Beyond the Codes: Repositioning Towards a Sustainable Development," presented in 2013, underscores the crucial role of effective communication in driving sustainability within engineering practice. While traditional engineering approaches have relied heavily on codes of measurement and standardization to ensure safety and efficiency, the paper argues for a fundamental repositioning of engineering towards sustainability. This repositioning, depicted as going "beyond the codes," urges engineers to integrate sustainability principles into their work. Engineers must recognize that sustainability encompasses environmental stewardship, social equity, and economic prosperity, transcending mere compliance with technical standards. This broader mandate requires engineers to engage in dialogue with diverse stakeholders, including policymakers, industry leaders, and communities. Effective communication becomes paramount in fostering collaboration and garnering support for sustainable initiatives. Moreover, engineers must embrace a new mindset that positions sustainability as a core aspect of their profession. They must advocate for sustainability within their organizations, challenging existing norms, and championing innovative solutions. This shift in perspective requires engineers to become proficient communicators, capable of articulating the value proposition of sustainability to various audiences. Internal communication within engineering firms is equally vital, fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation. Engineers must share knowledge, expertise, and best practices to accelerate the adoption of sustainable technologies and practices. Visual communication tools, such as data visualization, can aid in conveying complex technical information effectively. Ultimately, the paper emphasizes that effective communication is essential for repositioning engineering towards sustainability. By embracing communication as a core competency and championing sustainability, engineers can navigate the complexities of the 21st century and pave the way for a more sustainable future.
