The "Greening" of University Campuses
Green Campus is an initiative that conducts environment of the
campus, creates environmental purchasing policies, reduces
campus waste, maximizes energy efficiency, implements
sustainable land use, transportation and building, as well as
creates a student environment center and support those
students interested in environmental responsible careers.

Sustainable campuses are designed to reduce the overall
impact of the built environment for the benefit of human
health and the natural environment through:
 Efficient use of energy, water and other resources;
 Protecting members’ health and improving employee
productivity;
 Reducing waste, pollution and environmental degradation.
The "Greening" of University Campuses
The university is in 3 main campus located in Santa Catarina State and
77 DL Centers spread out the Brazilian county
Unisul – Municipal University
o Founded in 1964, is a municipal university established by the
Municipal Government of Tubarão, Santa Catarina, Brazil.
o Aims to promote education, science, culture, sustainable
community and social development with the creation and
diffusion of technology primarily in the region in which it is
located.

o Works under an Environmental Policy.
o Facilitates the operation of the Environmental Education in
different places, such as classrooms, virtual environments,
administrative offices.

 Raise consciousness of the environment, in a broad way;
 Make sure the access of the environmental information;
 Stimulate and strength the critical thinking about the
environment and society
 Stimulate the participation of the community considering the
environmental preservation;

o Use multi-criteria analysis in order to identify indicators and
create an assessment model to serve as a supportive decision
tool for sustainable universities.
o Evaluate how much a university campus is close or far to be
considered a Green Campus.
Multi-Criteria Tree for Green Campus
o In this research, the authors selected scientific journals and
documents in the area of sustainable universities and
conducted a literature review and a subsequent choice of
indicators to reach a comparative table.
o The basic criterion to include an indicator was its citation in
at least three articles published by different authors and from
two distinguished scientific journals.

o Each of these key factors was divided into secondary factors,
according to the review of scientific literature.
o After establishing the factors that determine a GC, their
relative values were established.
o These values were determined querying sustainability
experts from several countries, including the United
Kingdom, India, Italy, Cabo Verde, Chile, Germany and Brazil.

o Seventeen experts were consulted.
o The Green Campus Multi-criteria Tree importance scales
defined in a percentage for each factor.
