Avionics qualification testing is most important part of avionics design process, which is
assigned to support avionics certification. The failure of any qualification test very often is a
reason of redesign. But half of these failures happened due to supporting equipment.
Supporting equipment is used for proper simulation of aircraft environment during this type of
testing. This equipment should simulate the real loading of EUT communication interfaces,
provide EMI protection of standard avionics simulation test cards, which are used for simulation
data or discrete environment, and isolate interface channels from interference if the loopback
test approach is used.
So, the design of qualification supporting equipment with the characteristics, which meet all
qualification test requirements, is a key to project success.
The existing avionics design practice is to design or redesign old specific supporting test
equipment for project. It usually takes significant engineering effort. This type of efforts can be
minimized in case of using avionics qualification test cards designed for standard avionics
interfaces. The design of these cards should cover the highest level of qualification
requirements and specific test conditions, which are required by aircraft designers.
There are some major requirements for standardized qualification supporting equipment:
- Electrical compatibility with EUT interfaces
- Protection from EMI environmental during test
- Ability to simulate electrical loading for simulated interfaces
- Ability to support connection with standard avionics test equipment and their
protection from qualification test environmental
- Ability to create flexible avionics interface channels connections for loopback approach
