What is an allergy?

1 in 2 babies in Western Europe A food allergy has a huge impact. Not only on the individual,
are born with an allergy. but on the entire family. If 1 family member has a food allergy,
the other family members will often also follow a modified diet.
In the Netherlands 1 million people suffer from a food allergy.
With an average household size of 2.2 people, this means
that more than 2 million Dutch people are faced with this.
However 25% to 30% of the Dutch population suffer from, or
believe they suffer from, a food allergy.

Because of the increase in the number of people with allergies, the global focus on allergens is on the increase.

the UK have made the communication about allergens

6. Herbs and spices
Herbs and spices are often a source of hidden allergens, because
provided that less than 2% are used, individual herbs and spices
do not have to be itemised on the label.
Dutch Spices makes this transparent.
This applies to 24 allergens.

8. Results of consumer research
In collaboration with the Dutch Food Allergy Foundation, Dutch Spices recently performed online consumer research
into allergen-free food.
Highlights of the research
- 68% of the respondents said that the food
allergy affects the everyday eating pattern
in the household to a great extent.
- For 80% of the respondents, the supermarket
is the primary purchasing channel of food.
- For the majority of the respondents
(88%), packaging is the main source of
information as regards allergens.
- Whilst 67% of the participants said that the
packaging does not provide sufficient information
about allergens.
