Author identifiers are unique identifiers that allow authors to distinguish themselves from other researchers and to unambiguously associate themselves with their work. Author identifiers are unique identifiers assigned to researchers to prevent the author ambiguity problem within the scholarly community because researchers have the same first and last names.
Digital Author Identifier (DAI) system assigns a unique number to all academic authors as a form of authority control

Author ambiguity in the scholarly community is a
persistent problem due to:
• One author publishing under multiple variations of
the same name
• Common names
• Name changes, e.g. marriage
• Cultural differences in naming

Less Ambiguity
Less Ambiguity as to
who has published a
certain paper when
different variations
of an author’s name
have been used
Accurate
Citations
Ability to accurately
measure citations of
individual papers or
authors
Evaluation of
Author’s
Productivity
Easier evaluation of
an author’s
productivity and
impact in his/her
field
Data Storage
Simplified data
handling and
storage; author
identification only
has to be stored in
one place
Richer cross-
referencing possible
e.g., search engines,
browsers, and other
applications can create
links between an
author’s biographical
information and
his/her published
works
Academic
Network
Opportunity to create
new networks of

12. Scopus Author ID ...
is an identifier used in Scopus, a citation database
is automatically assigned to an author who has published at least one publication indexed in Scopus
groups together all the publications written by that author on the Scopus author profile
allows citation metrics e.g. total citations and h-index to be accurately calculated based on Scopus data
12
13. Web of Science ResearcherID ...
is an identifier used in Web of Science, a citation database.
allows researchers to add publications even if they are not indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection.
allows citation metrics e.g. total citations and h-index to be accurately calculated based on data from Web of Science.
Note: Since April 2019, ResearcherID has been migrated to a new platform - Publons. With Publons, researchers now can have a comprehensive view of
both research outputs, and contributions in peer review and journal editorial work.
