We’ve all been subjected to at least one of these odd characters once or twice in our gym visits -
some strange enough to make you take the headphones out of your ears and stare in disbelief. Here
we break down seven types of gym personalities that make us do a double take.
The Incredibly Hairy Hulk
What’s short, out of shape and is hairy everywhere but his head.
When that shirt you thought he was wearing turns out to be 100% authentic, all-natural, human
body hair, your post-gym snack suddenly seems like the last thing on your mind. When sweat beads
get trapped in his fur it looks like grass with morning dew on it. But then again, a little bit of sweaty
hair never hurt anybody.
The Grunter
As you're slowly walking through the gym, looking for the least-intimidating piece of equipment
around you'll soon hear strange and upsetting sounds, that's the Grunter,who can't exercise without
forcefully exhaling like a seal in heat.
The strange thing is that with every rep they do they let out the most disgusting guttural moan "Duh-
duh-Duh-DUh-Duh-DA-DA! Phwum-phwum-PHWUm-PHWUM-DA-DA-DA-PWHUMMMM. Many find
that the grunting is an integral part of their strength and timing, something they can't exercise
without, which would be fine if they were in the gym alone.
The Goddess
She's been on the treadmill for 45 minutes, and she hasn't cracked a sweat, even though she's
running at six mph. This chicklet is the one who is wearing full-blown make up and hair done up like
she just stepped out of a salon and looks like she is ready for a night at the club. This goddess does
more work texting to her friends and finding songs on her iPod then actual exercise in her hour stint
at the gym.
Cardio Lady
This lady seems to be on a cardio machine every time you go to the gym regardless of the time or
day. Whether she is walking on the treadmill, cycling, or using the elliptical machine, she always
appears to be doing a minimum of 2 hours of cardio a day.
Loud Social Butterfly
Sure, we’ve all seen people at the gym with their phones plugged into their ears, or shooting off a
quick text here and there - but that is generally unobtrusive to your normal workout experience. Our
personality in question here is the loud, treadmill socialite. They’ll be happy to share with the entire
gym their weekend plans, spoil the latest movie they saw. Just to reassure yourself that you’re not
the only one that finds this type of behaviour completely distracting and unnecessary.

2. Superstar Trainer
This guy is at the gym in his trainer uniform or working out at least 80 hours a week. You would think
he has cot in the men’s locker room. He is talking it up with all the patrons and thinks that everybody
is his best friend. Even on his off days, he will be there for a double work out. The gym is his both his
life and self esteem booster.
Short Term Gym Guest
These members, for whatever reason, decide now is the time to get in shape. They are usually out of
shape or obese. These members are normally seen working out with a personal trainer due to a
registration package they just signed up with. Also probably have a few new gym outfits to help
motivate them and make them fit in. However, they are out of shape for a reason and once the
personal training sessions run out, they become an extinct guest.
Gym is a place that allows you to break a sweat, relieve some stress, and meet people all in one
location. Unless you are in a specialized gym that is either for just yoga, weightlifting, or Pilates there
is a good chance you will come across each of these easily identifiable characters at your local gym.
