This document discusses the use of computers in nursing. It begins by defining what a computer is and how computers have revolutionized the nursing profession leading to the development of nursing informatics. The document then discusses the historical perspectives of computer use in healthcare and nursing from the 1960s to present. It provides definitions of key terms like nursing informatics and outlines the major uses of computers in nursing education, practice, administration, and research. The document also discusses issues related to computer use in nursing like legal/ethical concerns and provides advantages and disadvantages.
2. INTRODUCTION
A computer is a programmable machine.
Designed to sequentially and automatically carry out a sequence of
arithmetic or logical operations.
Computer are extremely fast, information processing machine ,They
take a given input, process it and deliver a certain output.
computers influences every sphere of human activity and bring many
change in industry , education, healthcare, scientific research, social
service, law and even in arts, music and painting.
The computer revolutionized the nursing profession.
Clinical and technological advancement led to a nursing speciality
called nursing informatics.
3. HISTORICAL PRESPECTIVES
In 1960s’, use of computers in healthcare is questioned, but studies on
computer in nursing are started.
In 1970s’, nurses assisted in the design of HIS computers are used in financial
and management functions, and several communities developed management
information system.
In 1980s’, nursing informatics is formally accepted as a new nursing speciality.
In 1990s’, computer technology became an integral part of healthcare setting.
In the year 2000, clinical information system became individualized in the
electronic patient record, mobile computing device were introduced.
At present we have the most sophisticated, handy and modern cost effective
computers that have become an essential part of the education system.
It has specific qualities and characteristics like speed, accuracy, diligence,
versatility, vast memory for storage and automation, unfortunately the
computer has no brain.
5. DEFINITION
A computer is an electronic machine that can work under
the control of stored programmes automatically accepting
data to produced the desired results.
6. NURSING INFORMATICS
A field that combines nursing and computers.
Informatics is computer science plus information science.
‘’Nursing informatics combines nursing, information and
computer sciences to manage and communicate information to
support nurses and health care provider in decision making’’.
by-ANA (2001)

13. ADVANTAGES
Computer help to work in fast and accurate way.
They are reliable.
They help in doing repetitive work.
They save time because they perform operation at a high speed.
Ideas can be understood quickly and easily through a presentation.
Photo and images can be transferred to computers with the help of a scanner
or digital camera.
They are used as a voice recognition system.
They store huge amount of information in format such as text, sound, pictures
film etc.
They take up very little space.
They are portable.
They are highly interactive.
User-friendly and easy to operate.
14. DISADVANTAGES
Computer is not a very cost-effective tool to be used in all
educational setting, everyone can not afford the computer for
educational purpose.
Health and safety is crucial to the effective operation of a computer.
Stress is widely accepted as a common and possibly the most
dangerous aspect of using computer.
Computer use is also associated with physical problems such as
musculoskeletal problems, eye strain, and electromagnetic radiation
risk of foetus in pregnant women.
