• Some task I might find as nurse informatics specialist performing:, policy writing, , project
management, choose appropriate systems, optimizing systems, educate, train and provide
support systems users, and system maintenance At a minimum, I’ll need a Bachelor of Science
in Nursing degree resulting in a registered nurse license. However, some nurse informatics
specialists have earned master’s degrees in informatics I need to consider the level of degrees I
need to stay competitive. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics 2016-17 Occupational
Outlook Handbook, the median annual salary for clinical informatics coordinators, as part of the
larger group of computer systems analysts, is $82,710. Actual salaries may vary greatly based on
specialization within the field, location, years of experience and a variety of other factors. As
technology evolves, there is a growing need for nursing informatics specialists. Factors like
location, education and additional certification will play a role in your potential to earn more
money. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2016-17
expects job growth for computer systems analysts in the health care field because of the jump
in e-prescribing, electronic medical records and health care information technology. With
growth expected, a nurse informatics specialist could have a leg up on computer systems
analysts because of their nursing background. Nursing informatics is still a fairly new field, but
as technology permeates so many parts of the health care industry, more information systems
experts will be necessary. Going further in your career often means earning an advanced
degree. If you already have a bachelor’s degree, it may be time to think about enrolling in a
Master of Science in Health Care Informatics program. Experience is the other way to move up.
Many nurse informatics specialists spend a decade or more working in a clinical setting or
directly with patients in medical or surgical settings.
