LG G3 Stylus Review
Highlights
LG brings out a Stylus version of its G3 phablet at a lesser price point and with peeled out
specifications. In the given market situation, the device with its price and specifications will
have to fight hard in order to make its presence felt.
• Good Looks • Mediocre Camera
• Battery Life • Unimpressive Display
• User Interface • Average Performance
Introduction
LG first launched its flagship device, LG G3 a few months back and then launched a cheaper
variant called the LG G3 Beat. The firm has now added a stylus to it and launched it as a
separate variant called the LG G3 Stylus. The smartphone is priced at Rs 18,404 and looks
just like its premium counterpart minus the high end features and specifications. We spent a
few weeks with its copper unit and on that basis we bring you our hands-on experience with
the device.
Look and feel
The LG G3 Stylus looks just like its flagship variant, LG G3. It has the same metallic texture
built on a plastic chassis. From a distance, one might mistake it for its premium sibling, but
when you take a close look at this stripped down version, you realize the differences. The
device is not very different in terms of looks, but internally it is a different world.
It also feels a bit cheap compared to the LG G3, reason being that it is all plastic and prone to
smudges. Its size also makes it difficult for users to handle it; one handed usage is a sure shot
problem here (unless the UI surprises us). What makes it different from its other variants is
the Stylus for which you can spot a slot on the top side. Moving on, LG continues with its
back buttons on this device. The power and volume keys are placed at the back, right below
the camera. That apart, all sides have been kept plain except for the MicroUSB port and 3.5-
mm jack at the bottom. The back panel is also very much removable and so is the battery that
resides below it. On removing the flap, one can spot twin micro SIM slots and MicroSD card
slot on either side of the back buttons.
The overall aesthetic value of the device is good enough considering its price point. It doesn’t
feel like some cheap plastic and holds some premium value to it.
Display
LG has incorporated its latest offering with the same display size as LG G3 that is 5.5-inch
IPS LCD display with 200 ppi. The screen resolution is 540×960 pixels which mean that the
experience you’ll have on the device will not be of HD quality, but slightly lower. It makes a
difference when one sees HD displays in the affordable range of devices these days.
Additionally, there is no extra coating that layers the device in order to protect it from
scratches and smudges. We would have really appreciated if LG had considered it because
the phone prevents scratches to some extent, but the display does not work a great deal when
it comes to smudges.
We compared the display quality of the LG G3 Stylus to other mid-range devices and
realized the difference. LG’s 5.5-inch display produced sharp and crisp colours, but the
sharpness and radiance levels were not at par with some of the high-end devices. We would
have appreciated an HD experience which would have certainly made a difference. However,
we were delighted with its visibility below the sun. All we have to do is, increase the
brightness levels and the screen becomes clear without reflecting.
Camera
The 13-megapixel camera on LG G3 Stylus may not be its most substantial feature, but it
sure is a factor that one considers before paying a hefty amount for a smartphone. We used
the device for quite some time and to be honest, we were not stupefied by its camera
performance. However, the device is capable of clicking some exquisite shots given the
perfect circumstances and your photography skills. The images appear sharp but detailing is
not pitch perfect. The colours also appear a tad bit faded and do not appear as radiant as one
would seek.
The LG UI also brings in a lot of modes and features to enhance the camera quality and
features. Using these filters and modes one can beautify their images and add an extra spark
to it.
The 1.3-megapixel selfie camera is an average one. You don’t get a great deal of clarity on
the front camera, but it serves the purpose just about fine.
Now those who are a fan of low light photography may not in for a treat here. To get the best
results, it is a must for the users to ensure good lighting conditions or else the results will be
saddening.
Software and UI
This biggie runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system and topping it is LG’s interactive that
we saw in previous LG G3 variants. The UI makes it easy for the user to handle its features
and bring out the best in them. It is the same UI that we see in other G3 variants, like Knock
codes, Retro TV, gesture controls, smart cleaning, battery saving mode and a lot many things.
To know about the UI in length, read out our reviews on G3 and G3 Beat smartphones.
In addition to the pre-loaded apps, LG has added a Quick Memo Plus app that lets you doodle
your way to reminders and important notes. Also, the user can click both- Volume high and
Volume low buttons together and make the screen stylus ready. A screenshot appears on the
current screen wherein you can pen down anything.
Hardware and performance
The all new LG G3 Stylus flaunts a 5.5-inch display IPS display and is backed by a 1.3GHz
quad-core processor based on MediaTek Cortex A7 chipset. It runs on Android 4.4.2 KitKat
and incorporates 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 32GB
via MicroSD card. For photography enthusiasts it has a 13-megapixel snapper at the rear side
and a 1.3-megapixel front camera. The G3 Stylus has dual SIM capabilities and a 3,000 mAH
battery to keep it ticking for all day long. For connectivity, the device has options like
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G, microUSB, GLONASS, GPS and more. What makes it different from
other phablets is its Stylus pen which is tucked neatly on the top edge and makes it super easy
for the user to get along with the device.
LG brought this low cost variant of its flagship device in order to provide customers with a
rich feel and elite experience, but its specifications did not deliver the kind of performance
we expected out of it, especially when we see ‘G3’ in its name. It is powered by the Media-
Tek processor which handles the device pretty well, but there were a lot of freeze points and
jitters that made the overall experience less exciting. Gaming experience was a decent one on
G3 Stylus but the device heats up a bit after a few minutes of game-play.
The battery back-up is one positive aspect of this device which took us through a day of
mixed usage. We played games, watched videos, made calls and clicked pictures, but
thankfully the phone didn’t run out of juice and still had some charge left in it.
To evaluate its performance levels more technically, we ran two benchmarking tests on it,
including the AnTuTu Benchmark test where the G3 Stylus scored a decent 18,438 points,
but was beaten down by a lot budget phones like Asus ZenFone 5, Redmi Note, Xiaomi Mi3
and other high end phone like LG G3, HTC One, Nexus 5, etc.
But when it comes to gaming, the device did a good job as it scored a whopping 60.4 FPS
score on Nenamark2.

LG G3 Stylus Smartphone Review

  • 1. LG G3 Stylus Review Highlights LG brings out a Stylus version of its G3 phablet at a lesser price point and with peeled out specifications. In the given market situation, the device with its price and specifications will have to fight hard in order to make its presence felt. • Good Looks • Mediocre Camera • Battery Life • Unimpressive Display • User Interface • Average Performance Introduction LG first launched its flagship device, LG G3 a few months back and then launched a cheaper variant called the LG G3 Beat.
