BARBECUE SEASON IS IN FULL
SWING, and while beer is traditionally
associated with barbecues, pairing wine with
your meal can bring out new and interesting
flavors in your already decadent entrees. You
don’t need to spend an arm and a leg on a bottle
of wine for your barbecue. There are plenty of
affordable and tasty wines that will do a great job
complementing your food.
Red wine tends to pair well with red meat and
dishes with heavier sauces. A full-bodied red
wine won’t be overpowered by a juicy steak with
all of its seasonings and sauces. White wines
generally pair well with lighter meals, such as
chicken, seafood and light side dishes without
a lot of bold flavors. Surprisingly, whites also
pair well will spicy entrees and offer a crisp and
refreshing balance to dishes with complex flavors.
Red and white wines both pair well with hot dogs
and hamburgers, so if you’re sticking with a more
basic barbecue menu, you can choose whichever
wine you regularly prefer. Many Ohio wineries
are hosting barbecue events of their own this
summer, so if you want to find the perfect wine
to complement delicious barbecue without a lot
of guesswork, go to a winery and see what types
of wine they’re pairing their meals with. Visiting
a winery barbecue is also beneficial because you
can sample a variety of different wines to get a
better picture of what you will enjoy the most at
your home.

is the best way to try new options and get a feel
for what you like best. Grab a bottle of Ohio wine
and enjoy it at your next barbecue!
