Dengue is the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral disease worldwide, with incidence increasing 30-fold over the last 50 years. It is caused by four dengue virus types transmitted through the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes. An estimated 50 million dengue infections occur annually, putting over 2.5 billion people at risk in endemic countries. Common symptoms include fever, headaches, muscle and joint pains, and skin rashes. There is no specific treatment for dengue fever, but managing fever and staying hydrated is important for recovery.

1. Dengue:The
Viral Disease
Dengue is the most rapidly spreading mosquito-
borne viral disease in the world. In the last 50
years, incidence has increased 30-fold with
increasing geographic expansion to new
countries and, in the present decade, from
urban to rural settings estimated 50 million
dengue infections occur annually and
approximately 2.5 billion people live in dengue
endemic countries
2. Dengue fever, commonly known as break bone fever is a flu-like
illness caused by the Dengue virus. It is caused when an Aedes
mosquito carrying the virus bites a healthy person. This disease
is mainly found in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the
world. The dengue-spreading mosquito is a day-biting mosquito
that is most active for around two hours after sunrise and
several hours before sunset but it also bites at night in well-lit
areas
3. Causes of
Dengue :
Dengue is caused due to four
viruses, namely - DENV-1, DENV-2,
DENV-3, and DENV-4.It is
transmitted by aedes mosquito.
The virus enters a mosquito when
it bites an already infected person.
And the illness is spread when it
bites a healthy person, and the
virus spreads through the
person’s bloodstream.
Once a person recovers, he is
immune to the specific virus and
not the other three types. The
probability of developing severe
Dengue fever, also known as
Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever,
4. Symptoms of
Dengue:
The most common symptoms
are fever and one or more of the
following:
Headache
Eye pain (typically behind the eyes)
Muscle, joint, or bone pain
Rash
Nausea and vomiting
Unusual bleeding (nose or gum bleed,
small red spots under the skin, or
unusual bruising)
5. How to prevent
dengue:
4 Cover bamboo pole holders when not in use.
3 Don’t let water be stagnant in the neighbourhood.
2
Use insecticide sprays in dark corners (under the bed,
sofa and behind curtains) and burn repellent oils inside
your home.
1
Use insect repellent, wear long-sleeved shirts and long
pants, and control mosquitoes inside and outside your
home.
6. Treatment for dengue:
• There is no specific treatment for dengue
fever. Fever reducers and pain killers can
be taken to control the symptoms of
muscle aches ,pains and fever. The best
options to treat these symptoms
are acetaminophen or paracetamol. While
recovering from dengue fever, drink plenty of
of fluids. Call your doctor right away if you
have any of the following signs and
symptoms of dehydration: Decreased
urination.
