COLLEGE OF NURSING
EDITOR’S
NOTE
hat comes to mind when one hears the word
Wnurse is compassion, care, discipline, and
knowledge.
For centuries, patients have relied on nurses for their
well-being. Medical professionals too depend largely on
nurses to tend to the patients once they prescribe the
treatment. On nurses lie the onus of monitoring timely
medication, food and rest for the patients. This age-old
profession has undergone plenty of changes.
Nursing - one of the highly specialised professions in the
health care sector has been constantly evolving to meet
the ever-changing needs of the society.
Besides dedication and thorough knowledge of the
medical condition, nurses also use their critical thinking
and judgement based on their experience and the
patient’s medical history, to serve individual patients and
help them regain their health. The challenges are
aplenty.
NURSING –
THE BACKBONE
OF HEALTHCARE
SYSTEM
Nursing began as part of service to the society in the
th
early 19 century, but professional nursing began with
Florence Nightingale who tended to the wounded
soldiers in Britain’s Crimean War with 38 other women.
She defied the societal norms that did not consider
nursing as a respectable profession during that period.
They cared for patients of infectious diseases owing to
which the morbidity and mortality rate in many cases
came down significantly.
Nurses transformed hospitals with their compassion,
care, skill, knowledge and set a discipline in the
hospitals. Today, their services are needed not only for
patients in the hospitals but also for private care in
homes for the terminally ill or the elderly. Full-time
nurses are appointed by those who can afford it.
The educational structure of nursing also changed over
the years. From nursing schools to colleges, formal
education in nursing has undergone many changes to
train these health care service providers with changing
technologies and advancements in the field. Many
countries university degrees in nursing and master’s
programmes for specialisation and advanced nursing
are imparted. As a career in nursing one can choose
hospital-based nursing, community health-based
nursing practice or mental health-nursing practice, care
of women, care of children, geriatric nursing, advanced
nursing, clinical nursing and many more. Geriatric
nursing is in huge demand today with the increasing life
expectancy and children flying off to far-away shores.
For the profession that was not looked upon as a very
lucrative or respectable one, things have changed for
good in the past few decades and nursing got its due.
Many colleges are working hard to churn out the best
of nurses by imparting quality education and training.
In an attempt to acknowledge this profession that is
significant for a nation’s health, we at The Knowledge
Review, have come up with a special edition - The 10
Most Leading Institutes in Nursing, 2021, dedicated
exclusively to nurses and the institutes that are training
future nurses for a healthy and vibrant society.

The Epitome of Excellence
in Nursing Education
The question, ‘Why Nursing?’ is often encountered by
those who choose Nursing as their major. This is an
eternal question and there remains no definite answer.
However, Christina Feist-Heilmeier in her book attempts to
answer this question by saying, “Every Nurse was drawn to
Nursing because of a desire to care, to serve, or to help.”
Every Nurse you meet has a different reason, a different story
that persuaded them to choose this profession. However,
though various reasons exist, there will always remain one
constant aspect; their desire to serve. Nursing can be defined
both as an art and science; a heart and a mind. At their heart,
lies the fundamental respect for human dignity and an intuition
for all patients’ needs. Nurses are the glue that holds a patient’s
health care journey together. Across the entire patient
experience, and wherever there is someone in need of care,
Nurses work tirelessly to identify and protect the needs of the
individual.
However, beyond this time-honored reputation for compassion,
also lies a highly specialized profession. Over time, similar to
other sectors, Nursing too is constantly evolving to address the
needs of society. Starting from ensuring that patients avail
accurate diagnosis, personalized care, to empowering the
public about critical health issues, Nurses play an
indispensable role in safeguarding everyone’s health.
Nursing would in the future, further expand its scope and
nurses would emerge as more than essential support staff.
Rather, they would primarily play the role of a physician,
globally and thus meeting the growing needs of the increasing
population. Hence, the world would always need and always
be in debt of Nurses.
Recognizing this growing demand, Dr. D. Y. Patil College of
Nursing, one of the most prestigious and only college for
Nursing in the PCMC area, Pune has taken the responsibility
of turning out exceptionally skilled nurses. It nurtures aspiring
individuals into professional nurses and prepare them to serve
the human community.

The Nursing Department
Comprising of the largest component of hospital staff, Nurses
are the primary providers of hospital patient care. One of the
most important roles of nurses is that of a patient advocate, as
they spend more time with patients than physicians. Nurses
affect human lives by the very nature of their profession, hence
it is very important that they require the right education,
acquire a contemporary skill-set and experience.
Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Nursing ensures that all the aforesaid
particulars are met. The college is well equipped with most

The Knowledge Review
Nursing
India
in
How it all started
?
The year was 1854 and a bloody and disorganised
international conflict raged on between five
nations – United Kingdom, France, Russia,
Ottoman Empires, and Sardinia. This four-year clash was
dubbed as The Crimean War. The British soldiers were
dying, however, faster more painful deaths due to the
diseases than from the enemy fire. This desperate
situation changed radically after the arrival of a 34-year-
old Florence Nightingale with 38 intrepid women
accompanying her. She collected data during the war and
conclusively proved that the leading cause of death for
many of the fatalities was the infections. By changing
the sanitation system, the health and hygiene regulations
of the wards and care facilities, Nightingale and the 38
nurses brought order to that chaotic hospital and nursed
the soldiers. She was hence dubbed ‘The Angel of
Crimea’ and the foundational philosopher of modern
nursing.
In 1857, the Indian Mutiny turned Miss Nightingale’s
interests to the health of the Army in India. In 1905,

during the British rule, missionary nurses arrived as
members of the Missionary Medical Association. This
was the starting point of formalized nursing in India.
The increasing need of trained nurses gradually led to the
formation of South India Examining Board in 1911, and
subsequently North India Examination Board in 1912.
Meanwhile, the Mid-India Board of Examination was
founded on 1934. After winning the Independence from
British Rule, The Indian Nursing Council (INC) Act was
passed in 1947 by the Parliament. The expansion of
hospital infrastructure and services created a humongous
demand for nurses, nursing tutors, health visitors, nurse
midwives and nursing administrators.
Soon after, 1960 saw the first masters, course – a two-
year postgraduate program in the College of Nursing,
Delhi. The introduction of Multipurpose Health Worker’s
Scheme following Kartar Singh’s Committee allowed
changing most of the categories under unipurpose
programmes can choose to get reassigned to multi-
purpose work. Thus, auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM)
started replacing ASHAs, trained Dais and served at
primary health centres and subcentres. In 1987, the
Government of India appointed a High Power
Committee on nurses and the nursing profession
focusing on the need of teaching proper nursing
education.
The current healthcare scenario in the country is
dramatically different from the past and it is the health
system that shapes the educational pathways. The roles
of nurses are evolving and diversifying whilst providing
a stable profession which is, till this date, in high
demand. The scope of public nursing in India. After
establishment of the INC, most of the states in India
founded their own State Nursing Councils (SNC). The
SNCs were made to inform and standardizing nursing
practices.
The standard of education and code of ethics are
regulated by INC and SNC. The colleges and universities
do play an important role in maintaining quality and
standard of education. Being a job-oriented profession,
nursing is quite a rewarding profession too. The wide
gap with respect to healthcare industry in India can be
filled by employing and training of 2.4 million additional
nurses to meet the growing demand.
The future of healthcare in India lies in mainstreaming
the health agenda. Directing the healthcare practices with
the adequate use of technology in a sustainably
developed manner. As per NHP’s 2017 recommendation,
more new medical colleges, nursing institutions, and
ensuring quality and updated education, are all ways to
strengthen the sector. Studies into the profession have
clearly shown that we achieve better patient outcomes
when hospitals are staffed by more nurses who have
completed their baccalaureate degree. With a good
nursing workforce, the country can finally release the
stress caused to the healthcare system by the Covid-19
pandemic.

Changing Definition of S
SUCCESS VS. CONTENT
We are all familiar with the story of Leo Tolstoy
“How much land does a man need?” A young
man takes up the challenge of running all day to
cover as much land he can before sunset so that he can be
owner of all the land as the king of land has decreed. In his
greed for more, he keeps on running too far and too late to
return. The major tragedy is that he dies in his attempt by
over exhaustion. The final words of the king are cryptic,
“All that a man needs is six feet of land, but alas this
man never could understand it!” The story is an apt
example of what exactly success is.
Earl Nightingale defined success as, “Success is
progressive realization of worthy ideals.” Indeed, success
cannot be generalized, it is relative. For someone it might
be living a decent life with all his needs met for other it
may be possessing million dollars in her account for
someone like Dr. Baba Amte it may be serving the tribal
people with medical aid. The crux of what Earl Nightingale
says above is found in Bhagvad Geeta when Lord Krishna
admonishes Prince Arjun to do his duties as a warrior and
fight and not worry about the fruit. Exactly this is what
happens even today, people think that the 'fruit' is what
defines success. Lord Krishna is telling us not the fruit but
efforts in the right direction are what define whether one is
successful or not. Once you know that you are doing what
your are called for and meant for, you don't have to worry
about the fruit or success, you have to keep on doing what
you are best at.
This is where contentment comes into picture. Benjamin
Franklin once said, “Contentment makes a poor man,
rich and discontentment makes a rich man poor.”
Cambridge Dictionary defines Contentment as, “the feeling
of being happy and satisfied.” Most of us are not happy in
life because we are not content. Our minds usually deceive
us in thinking that happiness is outside there. The 21st
Century world is fraught with technological advancement;
we have everything at our disposal at a click of a button.
But our thirst for more never seems to be quenched. The
commercials thrive on our desire for more, they will tweak
with the objects, refine and make it better and leave us
wanting for more.
The major culprit here is our fickle mind and our inability
to keep it focussed on the present. When our minds are
beset by the regrets of the past and the worries of the future,
we fail to be content and happy. In that vein one can say
contentment or real success is being able to focus on ‘what
is’ and accepting it. Of course this does not mean that one
should not dream big dreams or one should not aspire to be
more. We should be able to balance both while being
content with what is, we should have worthy ideals and
goals to strive for. But we should be able to distinguish in
the fact that it is not the goal but the striving that is what is
success and excellence.
Abraham Maslow, the American psychologist in his famous
‘Pyramid of needs’ actually was pointing out the very thing
we are discussing it. There are two facets to his theory; one,
success is relative for someone it may be ‘food, clothing,
shelter, for other it could be relations, for someone else it
could be being popular. The second aspect to his theory is
found in the apex of the pyramid, which he termed as ‘Self
Actualization’. Self Actualization means becoming
everything that we are meant to become. Note here
Maslow is pointing out all the below rungs of the pyramid
represent ‘deficit needs’. All the below rungs talk about
possessing something to make us happy but at the apex,
‘self actualization’ means striving for becoming all that one
is meant to become, all that is his or her Karma. That is
what the Bhagavad Geeta talks about we saw, striving and
not the fruit is success! It is beautifully depicted in Robert
Browning’s Poem, ‘The Grammarian’s Funeral’:
Happiness Quotient

Success
TMENT
can,
God grant me the peace to accept the things that I
cannot change,
And God grant me the wisdom to know the difference
between the two.”
So allow me to define success with a new perspective:
“Know that success is this/Finding and living your
bliss.”
“That low man seeks a little thing to
do,
Sees it and does it.
This high man with a great thing to
pursue dies ere he knows it.
That low man goes on adding one to
one
His hundred soon meet
This high man aiming at a million
Misses it by a unit
That has a world here should he
need the next
Let the world mind him!
This throws himself of God, and
unperplexed
Seeking shall find him.”
What distinguishes between the low
man and the high man is the low man
always is aiming to own something
that is his definition of success while
the high man is defined by his actions,
his striving to be better. This is the lesson that we need to
drive home be it in student life, as a professional, a business
person or any other.
As leaders, teachers, parents let us help our next generation
to strive to be a better version of themselves. Let us help
them to develop a mindset that is ‘attached to nothing and
open to everything.’ Let us be an example to them as
leaders, parents, teachers or mentors in striving to be a
better version of ourselves. Being content with what is
while also dreaming and reaching for more. Let us be an
living example of what the Alcoholic Anonymous Prayer
says,
“God grant me the courage to change the things that I

FLORIDA SCHOOL & COLLEGE OF NURSING
Empowering Students through Qualitative Education
OUR GOAL IS
TO IMPART
SUBSTANTIAL
THEORETICAL
AND PRACTICAL
KNOWLEDGE
TO ASPIRING
NURSES AND
DOCTORS
The ratio of nurse to patients in
India currently stands at 1:483.
That leaves us with a
staggering lack of 2 million nurses. At
times like these, when a pandemic is
already creating havoc, the lack isn’t
just troublesome but threatens the
entire healthcare and social structure to
fall apart. However, it is never too late
to learn from our shortcomings and
prepare so that we don’t repeat them.
In India, the medical profession is
acknowledged as the highest cadre of
occupation. While a doctor treats, it is
the nurses who make sure that the
patients follow the required healthcare
routine to get back to their normal life
as soon as possible. It is under their
rigorous care that a patient heals and
heads for life. This profession is given
the utmost respect and honour by all
the citizens of the country. Pertaining
to this, young students often look
forward to such a career that is
fulfilling in not just monetary aspect
but societal as well.
“
“
Florida School & College of Nursing
aims at educating young India to turn
their dreams into reality. It disciplines
and coaches them to become the best
nurses, doctors, practitioners, nursing
professors, etc. It is not only one of the
top Nursing Institutes in Bangalore but
it is also one of the oldest Nursing
Institutes.
A Commitment to Excellence
The campus of Florida School &
College of Nursing is situated in the
centre of the city of Bangalore, just
22kms from the city Railway Station.
The establishment is operated and
managed by Nursing and Medical
Association of Bangalore Group of
Institutions. This profound cross-
cultured medical institute embarked on
its journey in 2003. Since then, it has
educated thousands of young students
from all across India and
metamorphosed them into professional
nurses and doctors for the society. All
the teachers and staff members are
highly-trained and experienced. The

learning.
Florida School & College was founded
by Mr. Majesh Mohan, Chairman of
Bangalore Group of Institutions in
support with Mr. A. Prabhakaran
Reddy, President of Bangalore Group
of Institutions. The first batch of this
college started with an intake of 60
students in 2003. The affiliations of
Karnataka State Nursing Council
(KSNC), Karnataka State Diploma in
Nursing Examination Board
(KSDNEB) and Rajiv Gandhi
University of Health Sciences
(RGUHS) were approved in the same
year.
Strengthening the Healthcare Sector
With the growing demand of nurses
and practitioners in India, students
from all across India apply for
admissions each year. Florida School
& College of Nursing has nursing
diploma and degree courses for
undergraduate and postgraduate
students. Since Nursing is an important
profession related to the field of
medicine, students are given exposure
to the theoretical and practical aspects
of behavioural science, physical,
biological, medical professionals like
the physician, medical service and
pharmacists in the patient health care
system.
The college started with only a
diploma course in Nursing – GNM.
With time, it added more nursing
courses under its spectrum. The
courses available includes:
• GNM – General Nursing and
Midwifery (GNM) diploma course is
a 3-year course that aims at preparing
nursing professionals to take up the
responsibility as a health team
member in the health care delivery
system.
• B. Sc in Nursing – Bachelor of
Science (B. Sc) Nursing is an
undergraduate degree course of 4
years that can be done after
successful completion of high
secondary education. The course
aims to prepare students to be
competent professional nurses with
scientific and innovative ideas in
solving health problem and
delivering quality health care.
• PB. B. Sc in Nursing – Post Basic
Bachelor in Science (P.B. B. Sc)
Nursing is a two-year programme
which can be done after successful
completion of GNM. The course
aims to prepare young professionals
to assure responsibility as nurse
specialists, consultants, educators,
clinical practitioner and
administrators in professional
organizations, which fosters
improvement of quality health care.
• M. Sc in Nursing – Masters in
Science (M. Sc) Nursing is a 2-years
post-graduation programme done
after the successful completion of B.
Sc or P.B. B. Sc Nursing.
All seats of Florida School & College
of Nursing generally get booked before
the commencement of academic
sessions. Due to the reasonable fee
structures and scholarship plans,
students are ecstatic and happy to join
the college. To tap tier 2 and tier 3
growing education market, the college
takes the assistance of authorized
education consultants and agencies.
Cultural Aspects
Florida School & College of Nursing is
a multi-cultured institute which
encompasses the diversity and
distinctiveness of various states of
India. The joint celebration of these
manifold cultures, classic traditions
and prime festivals is a route to cherish
the ethnicity of the college. Over the
years, it has witnessed students
performing folk-dance forms and
explicit home-town plays and dramas
during periodic occasions like sports
day, annual day, festival celebration
etc.
One of the biggest college events is the
Lamp-Lighting ceremony where the
students pronounce the Florence
Nightingale vows to work endlessly for
the welfare of the society. These vows
are imperative for all the nursing
students to understand the true value of
being a nurse and a doctor. Annual day
and Sports day are celebrated to
maintain the dynamic balance between
work and play.
Securing India’s Health
Since India is a developing nation,
society needs budding professionals
like nurses and doctors in the future
years. To contribute towards the
welfare of the society, Florida School
& College of Nursing announces
scholarship plans in each academic
year for meritorious students. It even
assists education-loan facility with the
help of many Indian nationalized banks
like SBI, Canara Bank, Syndicate
Bank, etc.
The placement cell works full-time to
invite the top hospitals and healthcare
centres for campus recruitment. The
College has given interns and recruits
to Columbia Asia, Fortis Hospital,
Manipal Hospital, Livine Hospital and
many more. All students of Florida
School & College of Nursing are given
a hundred per cent placement
assistance. The institute has tie-ups
with well-known hospitals and
healthcare centres for practical training
and internships projects.

  • 4. EDITOR’S NOTE hat comes to mind when one hears the word Wnurse is compassion, care, discipline, and knowledge. For centuries, patients have relied on nurses for their well-being. Medical professionals too depend largely on nurses to tend to the patients once they prescribe the treatment. On nurses lie the onus of monitoring timely medication, food and rest for the patients. This age-old profession has undergone plenty of changes. Nursing - one of the highly specialised professions in the health care sector has been constantly evolving to meet the ever-changing needs of the society. Besides dedication and thorough knowledge of the medical condition, nurses also use their critical thinking and judgement based on their experience and the patient’s medical history, to serve individual patients and help them regain their health. The challenges are aplenty. NURSING – THE BACKBONE OF HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
  • 5. Nursing began as part of service to the society in the th early 19 century, but professional nursing began with Florence Nightingale who tended to the wounded soldiers in Britain’s Crimean War with 38 other women. She defied the societal norms that did not consider nursing as a respectable profession during that period. They cared for patients of infectious diseases owing to which the morbidity and mortality rate in many cases came down significantly. Nurses transformed hospitals with their compassion, care, skill, knowledge and set a discipline in the hospitals. Today, their services are needed not only for patients in the hospitals but also for private care in homes for the terminally ill or the elderly. Full-time nurses are appointed by those who can afford it. The educational structure of nursing also changed over the years. From nursing schools to colleges, formal education in nursing has undergone many changes to train these health care service providers with changing technologies and advancements in the field. Many countries university degrees in nursing and master’s programmes for specialisation and advanced nursing are imparted. As a career in nursing one can choose hospital-based nursing, community health-based nursing practice or mental health-nursing practice, care of women, care of children, geriatric nursing, advanced nursing, clinical nursing and many more. Geriatric nursing is in huge demand today with the increasing life expectancy and children flying off to far-away shores. For the profession that was not looked upon as a very lucrative or respectable one, things have changed for good in the past few decades and nursing got its due. Many colleges are working hard to churn out the best of nurses by imparting quality education and training. In an attempt to acknowledge this profession that is significant for a nation’s health, we at The Knowledge Review, have come up with a special edition - The 10 Most Leading Institutes in Nursing, 2021, dedicated exclusively to nurses and the institutes that are training future nurses for a healthy and vibrant society. • 14. The question, ‘Why Nursing?’ is often encountered by those who choose Nursing as their major. This is an eternal question and there remains no definite answer. However, Christina Feist-Heilmeier in her book attempts to answer this question by saying, “Every Nurse was drawn to Nursing because of a desire to care, to serve, or to help.” Every Nurse you meet has a different reason, a different story that persuaded them to choose this profession. However, though various reasons exist, there will always remain one constant aspect; their desire to serve. Nursing can be defined both as an art and science; a heart and a mind. At their heart, lies the fundamental respect for human dignity and an intuition for all patients’ needs. Nurses are the glue that holds a patient’s health care journey together. Across the entire patient experience, and wherever there is someone in need of care, Nurses work tirelessly to identify and protect the needs of the individual. However, beyond this time-honored reputation for compassion, also lies a highly specialized profession. Over time, similar to other sectors, Nursing too is constantly evolving to address the needs of society. Starting from ensuring that patients avail accurate diagnosis, personalized care, to empowering the public about critical health issues, Nurses play an indispensable role in safeguarding everyone’s health. Nursing would in the future, further expand its scope and nurses would emerge as more than essential support staff. Rather, they would primarily play the role of a physician, globally and thus meeting the growing needs of the increasing population. Hence, the world would always need and always be in debt of Nurses. Recognizing this growing demand, Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Nursing, one of the most prestigious and only college for Nursing in the PCMC area, Pune has taken the responsibility of turning out exceptionally skilled nurses. The year was 1854 and a bloody and disorganised international conflict raged on between five nations – United Kingdom, France, Russia, Ottoman Empires, and Sardinia. This four-year clash was dubbed as The Crimean War. The British soldiers were dying, however, faster more painful deaths due to the diseases than from the enemy fire. This desperate situation changed radically after the arrival of a 34-year- old Florence Nightingale with 38 intrepid women accompanying her. She collected data during the war and conclusively proved that the leading cause of death for many of the fatalities was the infections. By changing the sanitation system, the health and hygiene regulations of the wards and care facilities, Nightingale and the 38 nurses brought order to that chaotic hospital and nursed the soldiers. She was hence dubbed ‘The Angel of Crimea’ and the foundational philosopher of modern nursing. In 1857, the Indian Mutiny turned Miss Nightingale’s interests to the health of the Army in India. • 22. during the British rule, missionary nurses arrived as members of the Missionary Medical Association. This was the starting point of formalized nursing in India. The increasing need of trained nurses gradually led to the formation of South India Examining Board in 1911, and subsequently North India Examination Board in 1912. Meanwhile, the Mid-India Board of Examination was founded on 1934. After winning the Independence from British Rule, The Indian Nursing Council (INC) Act was passed in 1947 by the Parliament. The expansion of hospital infrastructure and services created a humongous demand for nurses, nursing tutors, health visitors, nurse midwives and nursing administrators. Soon after, 1960 saw the first masters, course – a two- year postgraduate program in the College of Nursing, Delhi. The introduction of Multipurpose Health Worker’s Scheme following Kartar Singh’s Committee allowed changing most of the categories under unipurpose programmes can choose to get reassigned to multi- purpose work. Thus, auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) started replacing ASHAs, trained Dais and served at primary health centres and subcentres. In 1987, the Government of India appointed a High Power Committee on nurses and the nursing profession focusing on the need of teaching proper nursing education. The current healthcare scenario in the country is dramatically different from the past and it is the health system that shapes the educational pathways. The roles of nurses are evolving and diversifying whilst providing a stable profession which is, till this date, in high demand. The scope of public nursing in India. After establishment of the INC, most of the states in India founded their own State Nursing Councils (SNC). The SNCs were made to inform and standardizing nursing practices. The standard of education and code of ethics are regulated by INC and SNC. The colleges and universities do play an important role in maintaining quality and standard of education. Being a job-oriented profession, nursing is quite a rewarding profession too. The wide gap with respect to healthcare industry in India can be filled by employing and training of 2.4 million additional nurses to meet the growing demand. The future of healthcare in India lies in mainstreaming the health agenda. Directing the healthcare practices with the adequate use of technology in a sustainably developed manner. As per NHP’s 2017 recommendation, more new medical colleges, nursing institutions, and ensuring quality and updated education, are all ways to strengthen the sector. Studies into the profession have clearly shown that we achieve better patient outcomes when hospitals are staffed by more nurses who have completed their baccalaureate degree. With a good nursing workforce, the country can finally release the stress caused to the healthcare system by the Covid-19 pandemic. By Aditya Umale 20 | The Knowledge Review | March 2021

  • 32. Changing Definition of S SUCCESS VS. CONTENT We are all familiar with the story of Leo Tolstoy “How much land does a man need?” A young man takes up the challenge of running all day to cover as much land he can before sunset so that he can be owner of all the land as the king of land has decreed. In his greed for more, he keeps on running too far and too late to return. The major tragedy is that he dies in his attempt by over exhaustion. The final words of the king are cryptic, “All that a man needs is six feet of land, but alas this man never could understand it!” The story is an apt example of what exactly success is. Earl Nightingale defined success as, “Success is progressive realization of worthy ideals.” Indeed, success cannot be generalized, it is relative. For someone it might be living a decent life with all his needs met for other it may be possessing million dollars in her account for someone like Dr. Baba Amte it may be serving the tribal people with medical aid. The crux of what Earl Nightingale says above is found in Bhagvad Geeta when Lord Krishna admonishes Prince Arjun to do his duties as a warrior and fight and not worry about the fruit. Exactly this is what happens even today, people think that the 'fruit' is what defines success. Lord Krishna is telling us not the fruit but efforts in the right direction are what define whether one is successful or not. Once you know that you are doing what your are called for and meant for, you don't have to worry about the fruit or success, you have to keep on doing what you are best at. This is where contentment comes into picture. Benjamin Franklin once said, “Contentment makes a poor man, rich and discontentment makes a rich man poor.” Cambridge Dictionary defines Contentment as, “the feeling of being happy and satisfied.” Most of us are not happy in life because we are not content. Our minds usually deceive us in thinking that happiness is outside there. The 21st Century world is fraught with technological advancement; we have everything at our disposal at a click of a button. But our thirst for more never seems to be quenched. The commercials thrive on our desire for more, they will tweak with the objects, refine and make it better and leave us wanting for more. The major culprit here is our fickle mind and our inability to keep it focussed on the present. When our minds are beset by the regrets of the past and the worries of the future, we fail to be content and happy. In that vein one can say contentment or real success is being able to focus on ‘what is’ and accepting it. Of course this does not mean that one should not dream big dreams or one should not aspire to be more. We should be able to balance both while being content with what is, we should have worthy ideals and goals to strive for. But we should be able to distinguish in the fact that it is not the goal but the striving that is what is success and excellence. Abraham Maslow, the American psychologist in his famous ‘Pyramid of needs’ actually was pointing out the very thing we are discussing it. There are two facets to his theory; one, success is relative for someone it may be ‘food, clothing, shelter, for other it could be relations, for someone else it could be being popular. The second aspect to his theory is found in the apex of the pyramid, which he termed as ‘Self Actualization’. Self Actualization means becoming everything that we are meant to become. Note here Maslow is pointing out all the below rungs of the pyramid represent ‘deficit needs’. All the below rungs talk about possessing something to make us happy but at the apex, ‘self actualization’ means striving for becoming all that one is meant to become, all that is his or her Karma. That is what the Bhagavad Geeta talks about we saw, striving and not the fruit is success! It is beautifully depicted in Robert Browning’s Poem, ‘The Grammarian’s Funeral’: Happiness Quotient 30 | The Knowledge Review | March 2021
  • 33. Success TMENT can, God grant me the peace to accept the things that I cannot change, And God grant me the wisdom to know the difference between the two.” So allow me to define success with a new perspective: “Know that success is this/Finding and living your bliss.” “That low man seeks a little thing to do, Sees it and does it. This high man with a great thing to pursue dies ere he knows it. That low man goes on adding one to one His hundred soon meet This high man aiming at a million Misses it by a unit That has a world here should he need the next Let the world mind him! This throws himself of God, and unperplexed Seeking shall find him.” What distinguishes between the low man and the high man is the low man always is aiming to own something that is his definition of success while the high man is defined by his actions, his striving to be better. This is the lesson that we need to drive home be it in student life, as a professional, a business person or any other. As leaders, teachers, parents let us help our next generation to strive to be a better version of themselves. Let us help them to develop a mindset that is ‘attached to nothing and open to everything.’ Let us be an example to them as leaders, parents, teachers or mentors in striving to be a better version of ourselves. Being content with what is while also dreaming and reaching for more.
