ith innovation, comes advancements and with advancement
Wcomes easiness in life processes. Technological innovations
and scientific inventions are aimed to develop the system
of life and ensure better living of human beings as well as the rest of
the creatures. Though they are introduced into the world with good
hope, they do sometimes lead to a troublesome situation. In the world
of medicine, innovations are done to improve the well-being of
humans.
It is a well-known fact that every coin has two sides and similarly,
every innovation comes with a decisive factor as well as a negative
factor. We, layman, often find it difficult to choose the side which is
good for us and omit the factor which is harmful to us. Sometimes, we
do certain harmful things without even knowing the outcome. Hence,
there arises the need of those people who can decide what is right, what
to choose, when to take it, and how to implement, concerning medical
issues. These people, popularly known as doctors or medical
practitioners take an oath to protect humans from diseases, illness, and
cure whenever necessary.
For humans, instead, for any living being, the most precious thing to
them is their own life, and hence if anybody saves their life, that person
is often termed as “God.” Moreover, nobody becomes that God so
quickly. It takes enormous hard work, numerous sleepless nights and
vast experience. Without these ingredients, a doctor’s life is
incomplete. The celebrated Afghan-born American Novelist and
Physician Khaled Hosseini said, “Qualities you need to get through
medical school and residency: Discipline. Patience. Perseverance. A
willingness to forgo sleep. A penchant for sadomasochism. Ability to
weather crises of faith and self-confidence. Accept exhaustion as fact of
life…”
The time never waits for anyone. Moreover, with time, the number of
diseases is increasing randomly. Once a doctor creates a vaccine for
one disease, a few days later, there is some other disease in the world
which is much more dangerous than the previous one. So, there arises
the need for proper training and grooming which help doctors to be
updated continuously and proceed with a continually innovative mind.
That is where the medical institutes come into the play. These are the
institutions which will never lose their importance until there is an
existence of the human beings and their contribution will always be
uncountable as well as extraordinary. Hence, they stand as the primary
pillars of the society.

he good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.”
T– William Osler, a renowned Canadian doctor.
As clock ticks by, day passes on, and the earth goes on rotating, some of the other advancements take place
in this world. With the evolution of the planet and creatures living on it, there increases the number of
diseases, difficulties in lifestyle and degradation in the quality of life. As new diseases start emerging and
old diseases start revolving and microorganisms causing diseases becoming more immune to precautionary
methods, there arises the demand for more number of efficient medical practitioners to help people fight
against deadly diseases.
To become an extraordinary doctor, one needs to have a mentality that is ready to devote oneself to studies,
books, and medical journals, along with a mind that can dedicate itself to tremendous hard work and is
prepared to sacrifice leisure time. These are the factors which build the foundation of a medical student and
the ingredient which forms the pillar of their foundation is a medical school. Without proper teaching
methods and close guidance, it is almost impossible for a person to grow from a medical aspirer to a
renowned medical practitioner.
To bring out such extraordinary medical schools which are helping students to become doctors who are
saving millions of life and creating miles in the society, The Knowledge Review magazine has come up
with this unique edition listing “The 20 Most Rising Medical Institutes for 2018”.
The edition has enlisted numerous institutions which are majorly contributing into the world of medical
education. As the Institiute of the Month, we have Jamia Hamdard (Deemed to be University):
Committed towards Achieving High-quality Standards in Higher Education. It is one such institution which
strives to be among the top 100 Institutions figuring in a reputed world ranking- providing high quality
education with an excellent infrastructure. It is also perhaps one of the oldest institutions offering medical
education in complementary system of medicine (Unani).
Along with that, we have covered numerous other institutions including Army College of Medical
Sciences: A Premier College in India under the aegis of Army Welfare Education Society; Sikkim Manipal
Institute of Medical Sciences: Promoting and Undertaking the Advancement of Academy Education; Sri
Balaji Vidyapeeth: Offering Extraordinarily Structured Programs to Prepare the Next-Gen Medical
Practitioners, and Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research: Preparing Human
Resources for Excellence in Healthcare, among many others.
To enlighten this special edition numerous renowned educators have contributed with their valuable articles
and these contributors are Prof. Pallavi Rahul Gedamkar, Assistant Professor, at MIT School of
Management; eminent educators from the Lovely Professional University. There are other interesting

Technological disruption is
caused due to the implications
of new advancements in the
existing technologies for the
improvement in speed and efficiency.
Like various sectors, the medical
education system is also continuously
evolving with upgraded technologies
for creating more possibilities for
medical students. Since the inception
of medicine science, the technology
has been playing a crucial role in both
education as well as various operations
in the medical history. Meanwhile,
earlier technological factors are
nowhere near to the current ones. Such
advancements will reshape the medical
realm. Thereby, medical educators are
keenly interested in implementing new
technological advancements for
evolving the education sector.
Some of those advancements that are
on the developing stage but soon will
be a game changer in the history of
medical science are as follows:

An Upcoming Era of Artificial
Organs
For several years, processes like
medical practices and pharmaceutical
testing was carried out on human
bodies. Thus to overcome such issues,
the scientists are on a brick to
implement artificial organs instead of
natural ones. These artificial organs are
created mostly by two processes, to be
known as artificially grown organ and
bioengineering organs. Artificially
growing organs are presumed to be
utilized only for transplanotory process
whereas, bioengineered organs can be
utilized for both operations.
Bioengineered Organs—prepared by
3D printing methodology which prints
an organ artificially with the help of
biosynthesized ink. This ink is created
in such a manner that, the obtained
organs are compatible enough with the
processes. Currently, a scientist has
printed various demo-organs with the
use of polymer ink so that, they can be
used for the practice and research
purposes in medical institutes. Soon,
the earlier unpredictable idea will
become the most prior thing not only
in transplantology but also in medical
science. Using such artificial organs in
medical science will improve student
practice sessions and will fill up the
void of organs availability as well.
Utilizing Algorithms for Drug
Testing
Whereas, for drug testing needs a
fully-functioned human body; this
might leads to adverse effects on the
body causing threat to the person’s life.
To overcome such issues, scientists
have been developing the first virtual
physiological model of human body.
By instigating this process, the drug
molecule can be tested on various
patients to look up for the possible
side-effects or toxic outcomes with the
help of algorithms. Many IT sectors
have been approached for creating a
perfect testing model for carrying out
various tests. Aftermath obtained from
these tests will help doctors to analyze
the benefits and drawbacks of a
specific drug on the human body. Such
supercomputer controlled programmed
human body will help out educators to
offer students with a proper
understanding of drugs, and their
aftereffects on the body. Mostly, the
drugs are tested on rats and donated
human tissues and organs. In future,
implementing such drug testing
methods will overcome such
availability issues, anyhow helping
scientist to create the qualitative drug.
Hence, teaching such concepts in
medical science will make students
more enlightened about pharmaceutical
drugs and its proper uses to treat
diseases in human body.
Nano-Robots: New Branch in
Medical Science
Nano-robots technology applies to the
most of the varied sectors. It is
technological demand and applications
are increasing substantially,
day-by-day. In medical science, a
program has been established for the
students regarding applied
nano-robotics. This way, the students
will better understand the concept and
will be able to implicate it, when
necessary. Nano-sized technology will
help the medical field in various
aspects. For example, a set of
anti-biotic carrying nano-robots are
injected into a human body, which
further denaturalized the viruses which
are causing damage to the tissues. This
way, the treatment will be faster and
more precise. Apart, the technology
provides n number of possibilities
making it one of the most significant
fields which are yet to be explored.
Predictive Holographic 3D Image
We have been following the tradition
of using human cadavers for studying
anatomy, but there is a possibility of
using augmented reality and virtual 3D
solutions for the process. This
augmented reality is already being
used in various sectors, in medical as
well. It has not achieved total
perfection for implementation in
medical sciences; the process is still in
its developing stage. Whereas,
hologram—a type of augmented
reality, can be used to create a perfect
anatomical model as fast as possible so
that students can observe it very
precisely. Currently, the Virtual Reality
glasses are used to implement
augmented reality into real-time
medical practices. Nevertheless, the
future of bringing virtual technology in
medical science ought to show more
probability.
Medical science will adopt numerous
factors in further years, but above ones
are more promising than any other. The
idea of bringing digitalization into
medical science has made the
education compact, easy to grasp, easy
to visualize and has provided efficient
learning to students. Meanwhile, not
only students but also doctors will get
to learn and explore new possibilities
in the medical sector. Hopefully, the
predicted superior amenities will uplift
the medical education sector to sky
heights by going digital. T R

human civilization. In ancient ages, the cloth was made
only from cotton.
The growth of power loom industry started during the First
World War. The first power loom unit was set up in 1904 in
the country. The traditional handloom owners turned to
power loom due to low expenses and high profits. There
was also exemption to the small power loom units from the
restriction that was imposed on bigger units. Bhiwandi has
got more importance in the textile industry than the others
centre of power loom as it is located near Mumbai. Due to
its locality, Bhiwandi received all facilities that are
available in Mumbai. Presently, more than one lakh power
looms are running over there. The power loom industry got
rapid growth and expansion due to financial assistance and
support of mill owners from Mumbai. Bhiwandi entered
into cloth making business with handlooms, it slowly
transformed itself into power looms hub. One of the
problems created by the power looms is that the waste
released by the industry is not managed properly. The waste
released by the industry is either flown into the river/lake or
thrown away in the surrounding. This led to various health
issues of the workers as the waste gets piled up around the
working area. Many workers suffer from severe skin
problems like psoriasis because the work of thread is done
with bare hands this also resulted in cuts on their fingers.
Workers also suffer from low back ache because they have
to stand all day while working. The noise created by
machines is the reason that workers suffer from hearing
problems. The dust from the machines and thread causes
respiratory problems and the minute particles also affect
their eyes, which results in itching and watery eyes. The
workers should be provided with hand gloves and a mask so
that the minute and harmful particles are not inhaled by the
workers. Government should take steps to provide the
workers with some health and medical facilities. The mill
owners should construct toilets and should also make some
arrangement for clean water for drinking purpose. The
industries should get provision of a dumping ground, so that
the waste from the industry is directly dumped there and not
in the surrounding. There should be age limit for the
workers, because senior citizens are still working in the
industry which may affect their health. Government must
give some medical treatments for free. The life of the power
loom workers is very challenging. The challenges they face
is for the most important thing i.e., their health. Most of the
workers are migrant so accommodation is the first challenge
faced by them. Working in the power loom with no access
to safety materials is the second challenge they go through
with. As now a number of power looms are getting shut
down due to various reasons, so the challenges and
hardships of the workers seem to be never ending. It is a
stigma; the power looms development is hampered. If it is
not developed than the power looms would just be a name
in the history of textiles. It is necessary to take a step
further for the development of power loom and its workers.

O
n a Quest to ‘Reach the Unreached’
One of the most annoying challenges of today is
the inability to harness human potential that lie
latent, simply because we are unable to empower their
minds due to lack of education. Unfortunately, higher
education in India has always been the privilege of the elite
and urban masses. This “growth” has only accentuated the
imbalance that has always existed in the educational status
of urban elite and the rural masses in India. The education
atmosphere in the villages is most uninviting. The illiterate
rural parents cannot provide the proper education to their
children due to lack of knowledge, financial issues and
others.
Mewar University (MU), promoted by the Mewar
Education Society (MES), envisions implementing
Education for all, particularly addressing the educational
needs of those population groups that are disadvantaged and
remain “unreached”. The university has approximately
10,000 students at present. The majority of students (more
than 75%) belong to SC, ST, OBC & Minority category and
representing far flung area of almost all the States of the
country. 90% of the students are from rural area belongs to
poorest of the poor section of society. Apart from focusing
on reaching out to vulnerable children through education,
equal importance is given to improving the quality of
education.
Extensive and Advanced Infrastructure
Established in 2009 and nestling among the Aravali hills,
Mewar University is located near a small village Gangrar,
close to the historic Chittorgarh in Rajasthan. The
University believes that tradition and culture are the real
foundation for knowledge to any human being. It lays
special emphasis on making students aware of Indian
culture and heritage as well as the heroic deeds and
sacrifices of those who made our country great. It offers
infinite opportunities for self-motivated individuals for their
intellectual, personal & professional development.
MU provides world-class infrastructure to its students,
creating an excellent learning environment and a
cosmopolitan ambience. It has 12 Faculties with 10L+ sq.ft
constructed area and having a diverse community of

The introduction, development,
execution, and results of
technological advancements
have created a considerable amount of
growth and enhancement in every field
existing today. The field of medicine
and surgery is no different. The rise in
technology has undoubtedly
transformed the current environment of
performing surgeries. Discoveries such
as genomics, intelligent systems,
molecular biology, tissue engineering,
Micro Electro Mechanical systems
(MEMS), robotics, etc., are giving
physicians and surgeons’ substantial
amount of guidance and inspiration to
face new challenges every day.
Surgeons, to date, have many options
and types of surgeries to perform such
as open, percutaneous, endovascular,
endoluminal, laparoscopic surgeries
and so on. The unprecedented progress
in technology has widened the options
and ways of performing surgeries.
Surgeons, in today’s era, get a chance
to plan surgeries and find out the best
strategy and procedure for adequate
performance. This has been possible
with the initiation of virtual reality
(VR) and other intelligent systems like
3-D printing and surgical robots.
Robots are now functional in the
operating rooms and assist surgeons in
almost all kinds of surgeries and
operations. According to some
surgeons, a day will inevitably arrive
when robots shall carry out operations
without the presence of surgeons and
even make them successful.
Here are few of the technological
advancements made in the surgical
field of medicine and some of the
challenges they face.
Robotic Surgery
This is a minimally invasive surgical
procedure where robots are used to
enhance the performance of a surgeon
by allowing precise motion and
providing access and vision to
restricted areas of the human body. The
robots provide a 3-D high definition
vision of the surgical site with the help
of stereoscopic high definition camera
giving a magnified view and sharper
image to the surgeon. A surgeon’s
operating capability also increases with
the added arm of the robot. The
surgeon controls the movements of the
robot with the help of a master console
situated in the operating room. The
robot replicates the movements of the
surgeon in a precise manner. Moreover,
the console’s design minimizes the
chances of fatigue by providing the
surgeon a perfectly aligned view of the
surgical site. With the help of surgical
robots, a patient undergoes less trauma,
minimal scarring and comparatively
faster recovery time.
Robots, after all, are machines and are
prone to mechanical failures even
during operations. This can be highly
fatal for patients and is a significant
challenge surrounding robotic
surgeries.
Virtual Reality-Based Surgical
Planning
Virtual reality has been a significant
breakthrough in performing surgeries.
It has opened new horizons for the
training of surgeons. With the help of
VR, trained and skilled surgeons can
stream operations on a global level for

trainees, physicians and radiologists to give them a real-time experience of what
exactly is done in an operating room. VR technology when coupled with scanned
images of patients helps surgeons in planning the exact route to be followed
while operating, much before the surgery even begins. This increases the chances
of the operation being successful and significantly decreases the time required in
the traditional pre-operating planning of surgeries. While operating, surgeons
typically use video feeds. VR technology provides a three-dimensional view of a
patient’s concerned organ which can be superimposed on the real-time video,
giving a more detailed view of the surgical site.
Patient Scheduling Software
Patient scheduling software helps in enhancing the management of patients
effectively. Communicating with patients and arranging an appointment
whenever necessary is now just a click away. This saves time and also helps
hospitals in managing relatively more patients. Due to this automation of
services, useful information of patients is centralized, that is, it is located at one
particular place in order to provide easy access to users. This can make
follow-ups quicker and easier by decreasing the amount of paper work. Patients
can now receive appointment reminders via email or SMS. Patients can also book
appointments with doctors online with the help of patient scheduling software.
Smartwatches that help Detect Heart Attacks
Nowadays, heart attacks are a leading cause of death among men, women and
even young adults. While doctors are trying to find the reason behind this fact,
technology developers are doing their part in developing certain useful portable
devices which will help detect a heart attack before things go out of control.
Smartwatches are devices which are portable and keep a track of heart rate, blood
pressure etc. of users with the help of sensors. By monitoring important
parameters, such devices can predict a heart attack or cardiac arrest much before
it occurs and also call for emergency with the help of location tracker present in
it. It is also water resistant and comes with a touchscreen for better usage. Apart
from detecting, it may even be very useful in saving lives of users.
Marketing Automation Software
Everyday tasks in hospitals like data collection, data storage, managing and
treating patients etc. are time consuming and full of never ending efforts. To help
create a hassle free environment, marketing automation software collects data
from numerous sources and stores it all at one particular place. This automates
repetitive tasks, reduces human error and ultimately enhances patient
engagement. Communication with patients becomes personalized which can help
doctors in making important decisions and solving problems quickly.
In a nutshell, various technological offerings and new software are helping
doctors, patients and the medical sector as a whole in moving towards a better
and brighter tomorrow. T R

TIME
MANAGEMENT
STRATEGIES
S
tudent life is a total rhapsody of
stress, fun, friends, expectations
and so much more. Being able to
handle so much, in such a tender and
inexperienced age becomes slightly
difficult for many. It is important to
realise the genius of prioritising both
the student life and the social life.
These two facades of our lives
complement each other and hence must
be given equal importance to. Here are
a few tips that you could use to make
the most of your study time yet
maintain your social interactions and
relations without a hitch.
Maintain a log of all that you need to
do
With so much to do and nearly no time,
we all have a tendency to miss out on
some of our scheduled tasks. The fault
is not with our ability to retain, but the
sheer amount of work that needs to be
done. A simple trick that can give you
respite from such instances could be
jotting down your ‘to-dos’. Fall back to
this list every time you finish a work.
The sense of self-indulgence and
satisfaction that we often experience
after the completion of a work, at times
overwhelms us to an extent that we
forget that there was more to do. But
referring to your list shall save you
from such episodes of forgetfulness.
Once you do this all the time that
remains left can be utilised for your
non-study purpose and it shall also
recharge you for your next sitting.

H
E NOWLEDGEREVIEW30 | | APRIL 2018
Make your commuting time more
useful
24 hours, not a minute more or less
makes a day. But the workload shall
vary every day. The everyday functions
of eating, sleeping, bathing cannot be
multitasked with. But one thing that
provides you with a certain extent of
flexibility is travelling. Use this time to
revise what you have already studied.
With mobile devices and unlimited and
speedy internet connections, we are
more tempted to indulge in our social
media pages and handles and aimless
scrolling through the internet. This
does not reap any benefit to our overall
development. Restrain yourself from
such activities and invest this time into
a more productive use. This shall
provide you with ample extra time
which you can put into meeting with
friends, relaxing and watching your
favourite films/series and in any other
way which helps you distress.
Don’t put off your assignments for
the last night
This is an extremely common habit
among most students. Doing a little bit
of your assignment daily saves you the
rush and the hectic work of the last
night. The tension you have due to the
unfinished work does not even let you
relax or put your mind in other stuffs
like socialising, hanging out with
friends, taking a time off etc. Make it a
practice to divide the work in days and
see how buttery smooth the execution
becomes without having to think over
it too much.
Group studying shall help you find
the best friends from your class
There are times when studying alone
does not reap the maximum benefit.
The student can lose interest, be
inattentive and also have difficulties in
understanding. Group studying gives
an extra moral boost as you work on a
common shared energy. Doubts are
better cleared and studying becomes
more fun when you have few people to
share it with. There is the advantage of
a problem being analysed from
different angles when you don’t study
alone. Your friend could think of an
alternative way to look at the topic or
you could come up with an extra
doubt. The entire process of group
studying is extremely symbiotic in
nature and benefits the participating
members immensely. Revision too can
become fun as you get a healthy
competition which helps you to trudge
on, however difficult the road may
seem to be.
Don’t take your food to your study
table
There are times we want to save time
by clubbing the eating and studying
time. This is a very bad practice.
Dedicate some time to step out of your
study room. A little bit of break is also
important to let your mind process all
the information that it has gained. You
must also realise that meal times are a
crucial time to socialise with the
people you live. With everyone coming
together for the meal there can be
many discussions, necessary
information exchange and other
chitchats that shall strengthen your
bond with your roommates, parents or
anyone with whom you share your
address. Not doing so shall alienate
you and you might feel a sense of
loneliness and sadness groping you.

Neurology is a specialized branch of medicine dealing with the structure, function, genetics, and disorders of the
nervous system. The word ‘Neurology’ originates from Modern Latin ‘Neurologia’ (1660). To understand how
Neurology evolved as a discipline of medicine, let’s go little back into the history.
An ancient Egyptian medical text called ‘Edwin Smith papyrus,’concerning trauma surgery comprises the descriptions and
suggestion of various injuries, including some of neurological nature.
The modern-day southern Iraq, which was known as ‘Sumer,’ the first urban civilization in the historical region of southern
Mesopotamia, have mentions of ‘paraplegia’ (Paralysis that affects all or part of the torso, legs, and pelvic organs) caused by
physical trauma. During the ancient Vedic period in India, the Ayurvedic text ‘Charaka Samhita’ discusses ‘epilepsy’ (a
Neurological disorder characterized by epileptic seizures), with mentions of symptoms and possible treatments.‘Hippocrates’
was the ancient Greek physician also studied the ‘epilepsy’ and its causes. In ancient Greek, ‘Aristotle’ studied the brain and
distinguished between cerebrum and cerebellum.
The publication of medical text and related material on a large scale became possible only after the invention of the printing
press. Before that, people published their work through various mediums. For example, Johann Peyligk’s ‘Compendium
Philosophiae Naturalis’ published in 1499 in Leipzig, Germany. The work depicted the ‘Dura mater’ and ‘Pia matter’ as well
as the ventricles on 11 woodcuts. The work on anatomy and physiology of the brain continued till the cells were identified
microscopically. This gave momentum to the discoveries and theories in Neurology.
To bring the ideas of neurology into practice the right diagnosis and analysis were very essential; it ensued when new tools
and procedures were discovered. For example, tendon hammer, Ophthalmoscope, pin and tuning fork, syringe and lumbar
puncture, x rays, the electroencephalography, angiography, and CAT scans came into practice in the 19th century.
Therefore, by the end of the 19th century, physicians were equipped with a decent amount of theories and procedures to

perform the Neurosurgeries. Neurology is a complex branch
of medicine, and ongoing clinical research and trials by
scientist and doctors make it continually evolves.
Neurologist - Neurosurgeon
A neurologist is a medical doctor with specialized training
in diagnosing, treating and managing disorders of the brain
and nervous system. A Neurologist contributes to clinical
research, clinical trials and other fundamental studies;
however, a Neurologist differs from a Neurosurgeon.
Neurologists treat disorders of the nervous system, brain,
spinal cord, nerves, muscles, and pain. Common
neurological disorders are a stroke, Alzheimer’s diseases,
headache, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, sleep disorders,
multiple sclerosis, pain, tremor, brain and spinal cord
injuries, brain tumours, peripheral nerve disorders and
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Neurosurgeons are not only brain surgeons, but they are the
specialists who are experts to help patients with head and
spine trauma, cerebrovascular disorders, such as aneurysms
of the brain and congested arteries in the neck that might
lead to strokes, birth flaws, brain and spinal lumps/tumors,
chronic low back aching, and irregularities of the peripheral
(face, arms, legs, hands and feet) nerves.
Ongoing Research- New findings in Parkinson’s
Parkinson’s is a Neurodegenerative condition where
neurons in the brain, which controls the motor skills and
movement, deteriorate and die progressively. While
experimenting on rats, researchers in the US have found
that, targeting a compound called ‘acrolein,’ which is a
derivative of oxidative stress, slowed the illnesses in rats.
These key findings could lead to new medication for the
ailment.
Hyposmia
It is a medical term, describing a partial loss of the sense of
smell. People figure out the taste of food by a tongue, taste
buds and smell, where scent plays a significant role. Hence
people suffering from Hyposmia often face problems with
the taste of the food. This syndrome is found mostly in
older adults.
Dark Chocolates- Health Boosters
Dark Chocolates with more than 70% cocoa (cacao) powder
can tremendously help boost your cognitive power, heart
health, and immune system. It can reduce the stress levels
and strengthen the immunity. Flavanols-antioxidants found
in fruits and vegetables are the principal constituent of
cocoa, which dampens the inflammation. Another study
illustrates that eating chocolate on a daily basis helped
people to have better attention spans, working memory,
ability to process speed and verbal fluency.
Functional connectivity MRI could help identify brain
ailments and syndromes
According to a new study a kind of brain scan called
‘functional connectivity MRI (fcMRI)’ can determine how
the brain region interacts. This research could help diagnose
people with migraines, bipolar disorders, depression and
many other ailments of the brain for which no pathological
tests are available to date. Doctors’ access such cases based
similar symptoms and behaviour.
Researchers examined the data from more than 10 hours of
fcMRI scans on each of nine people, gathered in 10
separate one-hour sessions for each person. People
performed tasks related to vision, memory, reading or motor
skills, or rested quietly during the scans.
The available data on each person allowed doctors to
analyze how much an individual’s brain networks have
changed from day-to-day activities and with different
mental tasks.
Future of Neurology and Neuroscience
In the past, a neurologist was particularly acknowledged for
skilled diagnoses using his years of experience and from a
comprehensive history and physical examination of
patients, however with limited treatment options.
Future Neurology aims to propagate basic, translational and
clinical research, focusing on the latest developments and
their probable effect on the treatment of neurological
diseases and disorders.
Also, the neurological landscape is changing quickly. From
the technological standpoint, advanced molecular
methodologies and neuroimaging facilities have
significantly enlarged our knowledge of neurological
syndromes. This will help our coming generation to
alleviate their pain and live a healthy & peaceful life ahead. T R

Achieving a balance between academics and social
life is challenging. The world provides stimulating
environment, full of wonderful opportunities for
both social and learning activities. Finding the balance may
be most difficult because of the availability of several
choices at a time. It is a myth that to score well, students
must stay with books and should avoid being socialized.
Though an ideal balance may be hard to find, wise use of
time can help. One must learn “PLANNING &
MANAGING MY OWN TIME” framework. This is going
to help student to perform better and will learn the
importance of human touch.
I will share some mantras that I have been following to
balance my academic-professional- personal life balance.
Track Your Time: Everyone can manage to get good grades
and be social. It just requires an effective time management.
Tracking time implies to be able to check how much time
you put for various activities. This can easily be done by
spending a week marking off the activity you’re doing
every 15 minutes, either in a notebook or on your phone.
Schedule your day: After understanding your need for
spending time on various activities, you can easily identify
those which you think is essential and try avoiding those
activities where you are degenerative. Thereafter you can
make your plan for the day or week or month. Ensure you
are allotting enough time for studying. Don’t forget to give
yourself YOU TIME!
SMART Goals: While scheduling do not overburden
yourself with unrealistic and vague target. Rome wasn’t
built in a day. You have to recognize your caliber, give time
to understand yourself. Set
Specific-Measurable-Achievable-Relevant goals with a
Time-line.
Don’t go with flow of others: Understanding yourself is
important. Just don’t follow other for the sake of doing
something. It is very important to understand our own
strength and weakness. Focus on your strength to achieve
your SMART goal, which is set by YOU and not by others.
More often, we get advices (rather dream of others) to
which profession to be chosen on the basis of salary
package. Trust me it will of no use in the later point of your
life. Because you will realize sooner or later that you were
merely another rate in the massive race (.. the race you
never wanted to be a part of). Follow your passion that will
give a sense of self-fulfillment. Dare-Break the Glass
Door-Live your Life.
Procrastination is self-defeating: “What will people
say?”- It is the question which can stop you being the
ORIGINAL YOU. Stop chasing someone else dream. Stop
avoiding your dream. Adjourning your own dream isn’t
wise decision. In the beginning people around you may ask
many questions for which, probably, you will not have any
answer. Don’t doubt your potential, don’t quit before trying,
don’t let your dream waste. Start working for your passion.
People to whom you matter, will understand you.
Break projects down: If your work seems too big and
overwhelming to deal with, don’t worry. You can make it
easier by breaking the whole project in small assignments.
Create smaller tasks that will help you towards completing
the bigger one, and complete them one by one. This way,
you’ll see the results much more quickly, and be less
tempted to procrastinate.
Reward yourself for sticking to your plan: Why to wait for
others to praise you. Treat yourself for implementing the set
schedule. Create rewards that will incentivize you to get on
with your work. This can be anything from a chocolate if
you finish this evening’s studying, to a theme park trip if
you pass your exams.

About the Author
Embrace New Technologies: The old
handwritten method still has its place of
course, it’s just that now there are more
options for personalizing study than ever
before. Whether it’s through online tools,
social media, blogs, videos or mobile apps,
learning has become more fluid and
user-centered. Expand your scope of
learning, make it interesting by using
technologies.
Turn lessons into stories: At every age,
people likes to read or listen to good
stories. Not only do stories entertain us,
they help us to understand and memorize
key details too. You can apply this to your
studies by weaving important details or
facts into a story – the more outlandish and
ridiculous you can make it, the better (since
you’ll be more likely to remember a
particularly crazy story).
Test Yourself: It is advisable to take your
own test and assess your performance
before appearing for the exam. And don’t
worry of you don’t perform brilliantly at
first – the more you practice, the better
you’ll become. Regular test can help you to
draw your growth.
Study Partners: Students have to learn
many subject in one semester with huge
syllabus. It is not easy to complete entire
portion of all courses. This is a good point
in time to select a couple of study partners
who you know you work well with and
are motivated to achieve good grades also.
Don’t worry if you can’t meet up too often,
you can use online tools to communicate
and share study notes with one another.
There is no perfect formula for balancing
your social life and academics. Each person
must find a balance that works for them. If
you can develop the habits and self-
discipline that you need to manage your
time effectively, your anxiety will decrease
and you may find that you can really enjoy
your time. If after using these tips you are
still having difficulty balancing your
activities, ask an advisor or counselor for
assistance.

Nation needs an education system that stimulates and excites younger generation, providing them with the learning
methods that they deserve and that is necessary to fulfill their potential. It clearly indicates that practical learning
along with a theoretical study approach is the education procedure that is to come in the near future. There are of
course too many courses available and many a reason for choosing any particular course but one should keep in mind that
science of learning deals with acquiring and recollecting information and presenting the knowledge in a practical world.
Problem Faced by the Students for Pursuing Medical Courses
Medical sciences have always attracted generations and a huge fraction of research funding is spent on applied research and
basics to further understanding of the causes and solution to it. We are also well aware of India’s current situation where the

education system is not up to the mark and it needs serious
consideration. In India, it is very difficult for any student
who so ever is opting for medical course. There are just
limited numbers of seats available and more than lakhs of
students are competing for it. Parents have high
expectations for their children, but not many can make it up
to the mark. Parents pressurize their children to become a
doctor and to secure high rank in the examinations. Medical
colleges have also a high fees structure rate which many
families cannot meet, even if the candidate deserves it. So
there arises a situation where the number of best, qualified
and appropriate numbers of doctors becomes less in number
as compared to the need of massive population of the
country.
The need for change is always welcomed because the world
is changing and our education system has changed fast
enough. Now we need such education for our society and
that is the need of the hour. We must recognize a young
person with fresh minds who aims to do something different
yet to contribute to the society.
There are many environmental related problems that our
country is currently facing and there is no denying on that.
The current scenario poses a lot of risk to human health.
The Pollutant can cause many diseases like respiratory and
lung- related problems. So here we need a young and fresh
mind that explores different ways and activities to come
across such observable problems.
Different courses connecting to medical sciences
Physical education- The physical course is a course
designed in a way to reach selected objectives. We all know
the physical activity is a natural way that benefits
participant in numerous ways. It can counteract major risk
factors for heart diseases and lung problems and even high
blood pressure. A good and proper program improves one’s
muscular strength. Appropriate physical activity postpones
the effect of the aging process. Physical activity releases
tension and anxiety. Looking at this, one can conclude and
analyze the importance of learning physical education.
There are many other career aspects in this sector which
includes Physical trainer, instructor, coach and physical
education teacher among many others.
Physiotherapy – Also known as physical therapy. It uses
mechanical force and movements, manual therapy that
promotes mobility and remediates impairments. It is
common to see painful symptoms of everyday injuries. The
goal of physiotherapy is to restore movement functions and
help the patient to recover from serious pain. It is
appropriate in the following situations like sprains and joint
muscle pain. Hence one can understand the importance of
the career in this sector.
Biomedicine- Modern scientific medicine is also referred to
as biomedical. It explains health in term of biology. If
anything goes wrong let us suppose if the body is struck
down by a virus, internal changes damage it, it goes in for
repair by specialists. This offers a distinctive and particular
way of ‘seeing’ and understanding bodies and health, a set
of guidelines about dealing with them—to look after them
as systems which need proper maintenance and care.
There are some courses available where the individuals are
taught to analyze some behavioral changes or pattern found
in some age groups. Like for example people with Dyslexia
often don’t recognize and differentiate between the letters.
Students suffering from Dyslexia don’t have lower
intelligence but they just need extra support from their
teachers and effective individualized teaching. Because of
difficulties in reading and interpreting meaning they often
drop out of schools. Proper use of technology and strategies
can make a huge difference for such students. So, those
opting for such course must ensure how to deal with people
suffering from it. Like if they present them with friendly
fonts and text to-speech method and giving the student
much information to connect the audio to its written form.
While listening to an audio and seeing the text
simultaneously, can actually help them to bridge the gap
between understanding words and assigning meaning.
There are numerous other courses which offer students to
be in the medical industry without a medical or M.B.B.S
degree. Many of such interesting career options are
psychologist, respiratory therapist, genetic counselor,
medical instrument technologists, laboratory technicians,
orthotics and prosthetics professionals, speech pathologist,
occupational therapist, radiation therapist, registered nurse,
and biomedical engineer many others. The current scenario
suggests that these are the few of the most prospering career
options in the medical sectors and some of which offers
very-high paid jobs. T R

  • 4. ‘ Editorial ith innovation, comes advancements and with advancement Wcomes easiness in life processes. Technological innovations and scientific inventions are aimed to develop the system of life and ensure better living of human beings as well as the rest of the creatures. Though they are introduced into the world with good hope, they do sometimes lead to a troublesome situation. In the world of medicine, innovations are done to improve the well-being of humans. It is a well-known fact that every coin has two sides and similarly, every innovation comes with a decisive factor as well as a negative factor. We, layman, often find it difficult to choose the side which is good for us and omit the factor which is harmful to us. Sometimes, we do certain harmful things without even knowing the outcome. Hence, there arises the need of those people who can decide what is right, what to choose, when to take it, and how to implement, concerning medical issues. These people, popularly known as doctors or medical practitioners take an oath to protect humans from diseases, illness, and cure whenever necessary. For humans, instead, for any living being, the most precious thing to them is their own life, and hence if anybody saves their life, that person is often termed as “God.” Moreover, nobody becomes that God so quickly. It takes enormous hard work, numerous sleepless nights and vast experience. Without these ingredients, a doctor’s life is incomplete. The celebrated Afghan-born American Novelist and Physician Khaled Hosseini said, “Qualities you need to get through medical school and residency: Discipline. Patience. Perseverance. A willingness to forgo sleep. A penchant for sadomasochism. Ability to weather crises of faith and self-confidence. Accept exhaustion as fact of life…” The time never waits for anyone. Moreover, with time, the number of diseases is increasing randomly. Once a doctor creates a vaccine for one disease, a few days later, there is some other disease in the world which is much more dangerous than the previous one. So, there arises the need for proper training and grooming which help doctors to be updated continuously and proceed with a continually innovative mind. That is where the medical institutes come into the play. These are the institutions which will never lose their importance until there is an existence of the human beings and their contribution will always be uncountable as well as extraordinary. Hence, they stand as the primary pillars of the society. ‘ T R Medical Schools, the Primary Pillars of the Society Rajarshi Chatterjee

  • 8. he good physician treats the disease; the great physician treats the patient who has the disease.” T– William Osler, a renowned Canadian doctor. As clock ticks by, day passes on, and the earth goes on rotating, some of the other advancements take place in this world. With the evolution of the planet and creatures living on it, there increases the number of diseases, difficulties in lifestyle and degradation in the quality of life. As new diseases start emerging and old diseases start revolving and microorganisms causing diseases becoming more immune to precautionary methods, there arises the demand for more number of efficient medical practitioners to help people fight against deadly diseases. To become an extraordinary doctor, one needs to have a mentality that is ready to devote oneself to studies, books, and medical journals, along with a mind that can dedicate itself to tremendous hard work and is prepared to sacrifice leisure time. These are the factors which build the foundation of a medical student and the ingredient which forms the pillar of their foundation is a medical school. Without proper teaching methods and close guidance, it is almost impossible for a person to grow from a medical aspirer to a renowned medical practitioner. To bring out such extraordinary medical schools which are helping students to become doctors who are saving millions of life and creating miles in the society, The Knowledge Review magazine has come up with this unique edition listing “The 20 Most Rising Medical Institutes for 2018”. • 21. An Upcoming Era of Artificial Organs For several years, processes like medical practices and pharmaceutical testing was carried out on human bodies. Thus to overcome such issues, the scientists are on a brick to implement artificial organs instead of natural ones. These artificial organs are created mostly by two processes, to be known as artificially grown organ and bioengineering organs. Artificially growing organs are presumed to be utilized only for transplanotory process whereas, bioengineered organs can be utilized for both operations. Bioengineered Organs—prepared by 3D printing methodology which prints an organ artificially with the help of biosynthesized ink. This ink is created in such a manner that, the obtained organs are compatible enough with the processes. Currently, a scientist has printed various demo-organs with the use of polymer ink so that, they can be used for the practice and research purposes in medical institutes. Soon, the earlier unpredictable idea will become the most prior thing not only in transplantology but also in medical science. Using such artificial organs in medical science will improve student practice sessions and will fill up the void of organs availability as well. Utilizing Algorithms for Drug Testing Whereas, for drug testing needs a fully-functioned human body; this might leads to adverse effects on the body causing threat to the person’s life. To overcome such issues, scientists have been developing the first virtual physiological model of human body. By instigating this process, the drug molecule can be tested on various patients to look up for the possible side-effects or toxic outcomes with the help of algorithms. Many IT sectors have been approached for creating a perfect testing model for carrying out various tests. Aftermath obtained from these tests will help doctors to analyze the benefits and drawbacks of a specific drug on the human body. Such supercomputer controlled programmed human body will help out educators to offer students with a proper understanding of drugs, and their aftereffects on the body. Mostly, the drugs are tested on rats and donated human tissues and organs. In future, implementing such drug testing methods will overcome such availability issues, anyhow helping scientist to create the qualitative drug. Hence, teaching such concepts in medical science will make students more enlightened about pharmaceutical drugs and its proper uses to treat diseases in human body. Nano-Robots: New Branch in Medical Science Nano-robots technology applies to the most of the varied sectors. It is technological demand and applications are increasing substantially, day-by-day. In medical science, a program has been established for the students regarding applied nano-robotics. This way, the students will better understand the concept and will be able to implicate it, when necessary. Nano-sized technology will help the medical field in various aspects. For example, a set of anti-biotic carrying nano-robots are injected into a human body, which further denaturalized the viruses which are causing damage to the tissues. This way, the treatment will be faster and more precise. Apart, the technology provides n number of possibilities making it one of the most significant fields which are yet to be explored. Predictive Holographic 3D Image We have been following the tradition of using human cadavers for studying anatomy, but there is a possibility of using augmented reality and virtual 3D solutions for the process. This augmented reality is already being used in various sectors, in medical as well. It has not achieved total perfection for implementation in medical sciences; the process is still in its developing stage. Whereas, hologram—a type of augmented reality, can be used to create a perfect anatomical model as fast as possible so that students can observe it very precisely. Currently, the Virtual Reality glasses are used to implement augmented reality into real-time medical practices. Nevertheless, the future of bringing virtual technology in medical science ought to show more probability. Medical science will adopt numerous factors in further years, but above ones are more promising than any other. The idea of bringing digitalization into medical science has made the education compact, easy to grasp, easy to visualize and has provided efficient learning to students. Meanwhile, not only students but also doctors will get to learn and explore new possibilities in the medical sector. Hopefully, the predicted superior amenities will uplift the medical education sector to sky heights by going digital. T R EDU-TECH TALK Education. Innovation. • 23. Power Loom is a mechanical loom powered by a Aline shaft and alcohol and was one of the key developments in the industrialization of weaving during the early Industrial Revolution. The first power loom was designed in 1784 by Edmund Cartwright and was first built in 1785. Some of the major causes of health problems in power loom industries are the noise created by the machines which can deafen a worker and the workers may lose their hearing capability. The threads that are used in the machine can also create skin problems to the workers. This article will bring forward the various health problems faced by the power loom workers and how to prevent these problems or at least reduce the problems. The Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation is known for its textile industries, and hence it is known as “The Manchester of India”. The textile industry is as old as the human civilization. In ancient ages, the cloth was made only from cotton. The growth of power loom industry started during the First World War. The first power loom unit was set up in 1904 in the country. The traditional handloom owners turned to power loom due to low expenses and high profits. There was also exemption to the small power loom units from the restriction that was imposed on bigger units. Bhiwandi has got more importance in the textile industry than the others centre of power loom as it is located near Mumbai. Due to its locality, Bhiwandi received all facilities that are available in Mumbai. Presently, more than one lakh power looms are running over there. The power loom industry got rapid growth and expansion due to financial assistance and support of mill owners from Mumbai. Bhiwandi entered into cloth making business with handlooms, it slowly transformed itself into power looms hub. One of the problems created by the power looms is that the waste released by the industry is not managed properly. The waste released by the industry is either flown into the river/lake or thrown away in the surrounding. This led to various health issues of the workers as the waste gets piled up around the working area. Many workers suffer from severe skin problems like psoriasis because the work of thread is done with bare hands this also resulted in cuts on their fingers. Workers also suffer from low back ache because they have to stand all day while working. The noise created by machines is the reason that workers suffer from hearing problems. The dust from the machines and thread causes respiratory problems and the minute particles also affect their eyes, which results in itching and watery eyes. The workers should be provided with hand gloves and a mask so that the minute and harmful particles are not inhaled by the workers. Government should take steps to provide the workers with some health and medical facilities. The mill owners should construct toilets and should also make some arrangement for clean water for drinking purpose. The industries should get provision of a dumping ground, so that the waste from the industry is directly dumped there and not in the surrounding. There should be age limit for the workers, because senior citizens are still working in the industry which may affect their health. Government must give some medical treatments for free. The life of the power loom workers is very challenging. The challenges they face is for the most important thing i.e., their health. Most of the workers are migrant so accommodation is the first challenge faced by them. Working in the power loom with no access to safety materials is the second challenge they go through with. As now a number of power looms are getting shut down due to various reasons, so the challenges and hardships of the workers seem to be never ending. It is a stigma; the power looms development is hampered. If it is not developed than the power looms would just be a name in the history of textiles. It is necessary to take a step further for the development of power loom and its workers. • 27. The introduction, development, execution, and results of technological advancements have created a considerable amount of growth and enhancement in every field existing today. The field of medicine and surgery is no different. The rise in technology has undoubtedly transformed the current environment of performing surgeries. Discoveries such as genomics, intelligent systems, molecular biology, tissue engineering, Micro Electro Mechanical systems (MEMS), robotics, etc., are giving physicians and surgeons’ substantial amount of guidance and inspiration to face new challenges every day. Surgeons, to date, have many options and types of surgeries to perform such as open, percutaneous, endovascular, endoluminal, laparoscopic surgeries and so on. The unprecedented progress in technology has widened the options and ways of performing surgeries. Surgeons, in today’s era, get a chance to plan surgeries and find out the best strategy and procedure for adequate performance. This has been possible with the initiation of virtual reality (VR) and other intelligent systems like 3-D printing and surgical robots. Robots are now functional in the operating rooms and assist surgeons in almost all kinds of surgeries and operations. According to some surgeons, a day will inevitably arrive when robots shall carry out operations without the presence of surgeons and even make them successful. Here are few of the technological advancements made in the surgical field of medicine and some of the challenges they face. Robotic Surgery This is a minimally invasive surgical procedure where robots are used to enhance the performance of a surgeon by allowing precise motion and providing access and vision to restricted areas of the human body. The robots provide a 3-D high definition vision of the surgical site with the help of stereoscopic high definition camera giving a magnified view and sharper image to the surgeon. A surgeon’s operating capability also increases with the added arm of the robot. The surgeon controls the movements of the robot with the help of a master console situated in the operating room. The robot replicates the movements of the surgeon in a precise manner. Moreover, the console’s design minimizes the chances of fatigue by providing the surgeon a perfectly aligned view of the surgical site. With the help of surgical robots, a patient undergoes less trauma, minimal scarring and comparatively faster recovery time. Robots, after all, are machines and are prone to mechanical failures even during operations. This can be highly fatal for patients and is a significant challenge surrounding robotic surgeries. Virtual Reality-Based Surgical Planning Virtual reality has been a significant breakthrough in performing surgeries. It has opened new horizons for the training of surgeons. With the help of VR, trained and skilled surgeons can stream operations on a global level for TECH ‘N HEALTH Education. Innovation. Success NOWLEDGEREVIEW T H E NOWLEDGEREVIEW | 25APRIL 2018 |

VR technology when coupled with scanned images of patients helps surgeons in planning the exact route to be followed while operating, much before the surgery even begins. This increases the chances of the operation being successful and significantly decreases the time required in the traditional pre-operating planning of surgeries. While operating, surgeons typically use video feeds. VR technology provides a three-dimensional view of a patient’s concerned organ which can be superimposed on the real-time video, giving a more detailed view of the surgical site. Patient Scheduling Software Patient scheduling software helps in enhancing the management of patients effectively. Communicating with patients and arranging an appointment whenever necessary is now just a click away. This saves time and also helps hospitals in managing relatively more patients. Due to this automation of services, useful information of patients is centralized, that is, it is located at one particular place in order to provide easy access to users. This can make follow-ups quicker and easier by decreasing the amount of paper work. Patients can now receive appointment reminders via email or SMS. Patients can also book appointments with doctors online with the help of patient scheduling software. Smartwatches that help Detect Heart Attacks Nowadays, heart attacks are a leading cause of death among men, women and even young adults. While doctors are trying to find the reason behind this fact, technology developers are doing their part in developing certain useful portable devices which will help detect a heart attack before things go out of control. Smartwatches are devices which are portable and keep a track of heart rate, blood pressure etc. of users with the help of sensors. By monitoring important parameters, such devices can predict a heart attack or cardiac arrest much before it occurs and also call for emergency with the help of location tracker present in it. It is also water resistant and comes with a touchscreen for better usage. Apart from detecting, it may even be very useful in saving lives of users. Marketing Automation Software Everyday tasks in hospitals like data collection, data storage, managing and treating patients etc. are time consuming and full of never ending efforts. To help create a hassle free environment, marketing automation software collects data from numerous sources and stores it all at one particular place. This automates repetitive tasks, reduces human error and ultimately enhances patient engagement. Communication with patients becomes personalized which can help doctors in making important decisions and solving problems quickly. In a nutshell, various technological offerings and new software are helping doctors, patients and the medical sector as a whole in moving towards a better and brighter tomorrow. T R Education. • 32. TIME MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES S tudent life is a total rhapsody of stress, fun, friends, expectations and so much more. Being able to handle so much, in such a tender and inexperienced age becomes slightly difficult for many. It is important to realise the genius of prioritising both the student life and the social life. These two facades of our lives complement each other and hence must be given equal importance to. Here are a few tips that you could use to make the most of your study time yet maintain your social interactions and relations without a hitch. Maintain a log of all that you need to do With so much to do and nearly no time, we all have a tendency to miss out on some of our scheduled tasks. The fault is not with our ability to retain, but the sheer amount of work that needs to be done. A simple trick that can give you respite from such instances could be jotting down your ‘to-dos’. Fall back to this list every time you finish a work. The sense of self-indulgence and satisfaction that we often experience after the completion of a work, at times overwhelms us to an extent that we forget that there was more to do. But referring to your list shall save you from such episodes of forgetfulness. Once you do this all the time that remains left can be utilised for your non-study purpose and it shall also recharge you for your next sitting. Education. Innovation. • 33. Make your commuting time more useful 24 hours, not a minute more or less makes a day. But the workload shall vary every day. The everyday functions of eating, sleeping, bathing cannot be multitasked with. But one thing that provides you with a certain extent of flexibility is travelling. Use this time to revise what you have already studied. With mobile devices and unlimited and speedy internet connections, we are more tempted to indulge in our social media pages and handles and aimless scrolling through the internet. This does not reap any benefit to our overall development. Restrain yourself from such activities and invest this time into a more productive use. This shall provide you with ample extra time which you can put into meeting with friends, relaxing and watching your favourite films/series and in any other way which helps you distress. Don’t put off your assignments for the last night This is an extremely common habit among most students. Doing a little bit of your assignment daily saves you the rush and the hectic work of the last night. The tension you have due to the unfinished work does not even let you relax or put your mind in other stuffs like socialising, hanging out with friends, taking a time off etc. Make it a practice to divide the work in days and see how buttery smooth the execution becomes without having to think over it too much. Group studying shall help you find the best friends from your class There are times when studying alone does not reap the maximum benefit. The student can lose interest, be inattentive and also have difficulties in understanding. Group studying gives an extra moral boost as you work on a common shared energy. Doubts are better cleared and studying becomes more fun when you have few people to share it with. There is the advantage of a problem being analysed from different angles when you don’t study alone. Your friend could think of an alternative way to look at the topic or you could come up with an extra doubt. The entire process of group studying is extremely symbiotic in nature and benefits the participating members immensely. Revision too can become fun as you get a healthy competition which helps you to trudge on, however difficult the road may seem to be. Don’t take your food to your study table There are times we want to save time by clubbing the eating and studying time. This is a very bad practice. Dedicate some time to step out of your study room. A little bit of break is also important to let your mind process all the information that it has gained. You must also realise that meal times are a crucial time to socialise with the people you live. With everyone coming together for the meal there can be many discussions, necessary information exchange and other chitchats that shall strengthen your bond with your roommates, parents or anyone with whom you share your address. Not doing so shall alienate you and you might feel a sense of loneliness and sadness groping you. • 39. Neurology is a specialized branch of medicine dealing with the structure, function, genetics, and disorders of the nervous system. The word ‘Neurology’ originates from Modern Latin ‘Neurologia’ (1660). To understand how Neurology evolved as a discipline of medicine, let’s go little back into the history. An ancient Egyptian medical text called ‘Edwin Smith papyrus,’concerning trauma surgery comprises the descriptions and suggestion of various injuries, including some of neurological nature. The modern-day southern Iraq, which was known as ‘Sumer,’ the first urban civilization in the historical region of southern Mesopotamia, have mentions of ‘paraplegia’ (Paralysis that affects all or part of the torso, legs, and pelvic organs) caused by physical trauma. During the ancient Vedic period in India, the Ayurvedic text ‘Charaka Samhita’ discusses ‘epilepsy’ (a Neurological disorder characterized by epileptic seizures), with mentions of symptoms and possible treatments.‘Hippocrates’ was the ancient Greek physician also studied the ‘epilepsy’ and its causes. In ancient Greek, ‘Aristotle’ studied the brain and distinguished between cerebrum and cerebellum. The publication of medical text and related material on a large scale became possible only after the invention of the printing press. Before that, people published their work through various mediums. For example, Johann Peyligk’s ‘Compendium Philosophiae Naturalis’ published in 1499 in Leipzig, Germany. The work depicted the ‘Dura mater’ and ‘Pia matter’ as well as the ventricles on 11 woodcuts. The work on anatomy and physiology of the brain continued till the cells were identified microscopically. This gave momentum to the discoveries and theories in Neurology. To bring the ideas of neurology into practice the right diagnosis and analysis were very essential; it ensued when new tools and procedures were discovered. For example, tendon hammer, Ophthalmoscope, pin and tuning fork, syringe and lumbar puncture, x rays, the electroencephalography, angiography, and CAT scans came into practice in the 19th century. Therefore, by the end of the 19th century, physicians were equipped with a decent amount of theories and procedures to an EVOLVING SCIENCE TALK Education. Innovation. • 40. perform the Neurosurgeries. Neurology is a complex branch of medicine, and ongoing clinical research and trials by scientist and doctors make it continually evolves. Neurologist - Neurosurgeon A neurologist is a medical doctor with specialized training in diagnosing, treating and managing disorders of the brain and nervous system. A Neurologist contributes to clinical research, clinical trials and other fundamental studies; however, a Neurologist differs from a Neurosurgeon. Neurologists treat disorders of the nervous system, brain, spinal cord, nerves, muscles, and pain. Common neurological disorders are a stroke, Alzheimer’s diseases, headache, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, sleep disorders, multiple sclerosis, pain, tremor, brain and spinal cord injuries, brain tumours, peripheral nerve disorders and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Neurosurgeons are not only brain surgeons, but they are the specialists who are experts to help patients with head and spine trauma, cerebrovascular disorders, such as aneurysms of the brain and congested arteries in the neck that might lead to strokes, birth flaws, brain and spinal lumps/tumors, chronic low back aching, and irregularities of the peripheral (face, arms, legs, hands and feet) nerves. Ongoing Research- New findings in Parkinson’s Parkinson’s is a Neurodegenerative condition where neurons in the brain, which controls the motor skills and movement, deteriorate and die progressively. While experimenting on rats, researchers in the US have found that, targeting a compound called ‘acrolein,’ which is a derivative of oxidative stress, slowed the illnesses in rats. These key findings could lead to new medication for the ailment. Hyposmia It is a medical term, describing a partial loss of the sense of smell. People figure out the taste of food by a tongue, taste buds and smell, where scent plays a significant role. Hence people suffering from Hyposmia often face problems with the taste of the food. This syndrome is found mostly in older adults. Dark Chocolates- Health Boosters Dark Chocolates with more than 70% cocoa (cacao) powder can tremendously help boost your cognitive power, heart health, and immune system. It can reduce the stress levels and strengthen the immunity. Flavanols-antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables are the principal constituent of cocoa, which dampens the inflammation. Another study illustrates that eating chocolate on a daily basis helped people to have better attention spans, working memory, ability to process speed and verbal fluency. Functional connectivity MRI could help identify brain ailments and syndromes According to a new study a kind of brain scan called ‘functional connectivity MRI (fcMRI)’ can determine how the brain region interacts. This research could help diagnose people with migraines, bipolar disorders, depression and many other ailments of the brain for which no pathological tests are available to date. Doctors’ access such cases based similar symptoms and behaviour. Researchers examined the data from more than 10 hours of fcMRI scans on each of nine people, gathered in 10 separate one-hour sessions for each person. People performed tasks related to vision, memory, reading or motor skills, or rested quietly during the scans. The available data on each person allowed doctors to analyze how much an individual’s brain networks have changed from day-to-day activities and with different mental tasks. Future of Neurology and Neuroscience In the past, a neurologist was particularly acknowledged for skilled diagnoses using his years of experience and from a comprehensive history and physical examination of patients, however with limited treatment options. Future Neurology aims to propagate basic, translational and clinical research, focusing on the latest developments and their probable effect on the treatment of neurological diseases and disorders. Also, the neurological landscape is changing quickly. From the technological standpoint, advanced molecular methodologies and neuroimaging facilities have significantly enlarged our knowledge of neurological syndromes. This will help our coming generation to alleviate their pain and live a healthy & peaceful life ahead. T R Education. Innovation. Success NOWLEDGEREVIEW T H E NOWLEDGEREVIEW38 | | APRIL 2018

  • 42. Achieving a balance between academics and social life is challenging. The world provides stimulating environment, full of wonderful opportunities for both social and learning activities. Finding the balance may be most difficult because of the availability of several choices at a time. It is a myth that to score well, students must stay with books and should avoid being socialized. Though an ideal balance may be hard to find, wise use of time can help. One must learn “PLANNING & MANAGING MY OWN TIME” framework. This is going to help student to perform better and will learn the importance of human touch. I will share some mantras that I have been following to balance my academic-professional- personal life balance. Track Your Time: Everyone can manage to get good grades and be social. It just requires an effective time management. Tracking time implies to be able to check how much time you put for various activities. This can easily be done by spending a week marking off the activity you’re doing every 15 minutes, either in a notebook or on your phone. Schedule your day: After understanding your need for spending time on various activities, you can easily identify those which you think is essential and try avoiding those activities where you are degenerative. Thereafter you can make your plan for the day or week or month. Ensure you are allotting enough time for studying. Don’t forget to give yourself YOU TIME! SMART Goals: While scheduling do not overburden yourself with unrealistic and vague target. Rome wasn’t built in a day. You have to recognize your caliber, give time to understand yourself. Set Specific-Measurable-Achievable-Relevant goals with a Time-line. Don’t go with flow of others: Understanding yourself is important. Just don’t follow other for the sake of doing something. It is very important to understand our own strength and weakness. Focus on your strength to achieve your SMART goal, which is set by YOU and not by others. More often, we get advices (rather dream of others) to which profession to be chosen on the basis of salary package. Trust me it will of no use in the later point of your life. Because you will realize sooner or later that you were merely another rate in the massive race (.. the race you never wanted to be a part of). Follow your passion that will give a sense of self-fulfillment. Dare-Break the Glass Door-Live your Life. Procrastination is self-defeating: “What will people say?”- It is the question which can stop you being the ORIGINAL YOU. Stop chasing someone else dream. Stop avoiding your dream. Adjourning your own dream isn’t wise decision. In the beginning people around you may ask many questions for which, probably, you will not have any answer. Don’t doubt your potential, don’t quit before trying, don’t let your dream waste. Start working for your passion. People to whom you matter, will understand you. Break projects down: If your work seems too big and overwhelming to deal with, don’t worry. You can make it easier by breaking the whole project in small assignments. Create smaller tasks that will help you towards completing the bigger one, and complete them one by one. This way, you’ll see the results much more quickly, and be less tempted to procrastinate. Reward yourself for sticking to your plan: Why to wait for others to praise you. Treat yourself for implementing the set schedule. Create rewards that will incentivize you to get on with your work. This can be anything from a chocolate if you finish this evening’s studying, to a theme park trip if you pass your exams. TRICKS TO MANAGE TIMEBETWEEN STUDY, PRACTICE & SOCIAL LIFE Education. • 43. About the Author Embrace New Technologies: The old handwritten method still has its place of course, it’s just that now there are more options for personalizing study than ever before. Whether it’s through online tools, social media, blogs, videos or mobile apps, learning has become more fluid and user-centered. Expand your scope of learning, make it interesting by using technologies. Turn lessons into stories: At every age, people likes to read or listen to good stories. Not only do stories entertain us, they help us to understand and memorize key details too. You can apply this to your studies by weaving important details or facts into a story – the more outlandish and ridiculous you can make it, the better (since you’ll be more likely to remember a particularly crazy story). Test Yourself: It is advisable to take your own test and assess your performance before appearing for the exam. And don’t worry of you don’t perform brilliantly at first – the more you practice, the better you’ll become. Regular test can help you to draw your growth. Study Partners: Students have to learn many subject in one semester with huge syllabus. It is not easy to complete entire portion of all courses. This is a good point in time to select a couple of study partners who you know you work well with and are motivated to achieve good grades also. Don’t worry if you can’t meet up too often, you can use online tools to communicate and share study notes with one another. There is no perfect formula for balancing your social life and academics. Each person must find a balance that works for them. If you can develop the habits and self- discipline that you need to manage your time effectively, your anxiety will decrease and you may find that you can really enjoy your time. If after using these tips you are still having difficulty balancing your activities, ask an advisor or counselor for assistance. • 48. education system is not up to the mark and it needs serious consideration. In India, it is very difficult for any student who so ever is opting for medical course. There are just limited numbers of seats available and more than lakhs of students are competing for it. Parents have high expectations for their children, but not many can make it up to the mark. Parents pressurize their children to become a doctor and to secure high rank in the examinations. Medical colleges have also a high fees structure rate which many families cannot meet, even if the candidate deserves it. So there arises a situation where the number of best, qualified and appropriate numbers of doctors becomes less in number as compared to the need of massive population of the country. The need for change is always welcomed because the world is changing and our education system has changed fast enough. Now we need such education for our society and that is the need of the hour. We must recognize a young person with fresh minds who aims to do something different yet to contribute to the society. There are many environmental related problems that our country is currently facing and there is no denying on that. The current scenario poses a lot of risk to human health. The Pollutant can cause many diseases like respiratory and lung- related problems. So here we need a young and fresh mind that explores different ways and activities to come across such observable problems. Different courses connecting to medical sciences Physical education- The physical course is a course designed in a way to reach selected objectives. We all know the physical activity is a natural way that benefits participant in numerous ways. It can counteract major risk factors for heart diseases and lung problems and even high blood pressure. A good and proper program improves one’s muscular strength. Appropriate physical activity postpones the effect of the aging process. Physical activity releases tension and anxiety. Looking at this, one can conclude and analyze the importance of learning physical education. There are many other career aspects in this sector which includes Physical trainer, instructor, coach and physical education teacher among many others. Physiotherapy – Also known as physical therapy. It uses mechanical force and movements, manual therapy that promotes mobility and remediates impairments. It is common to see painful symptoms of everyday injuries. The goal of physiotherapy is to restore movement functions and help the patient to recover from serious pain. It is appropriate in the following situations like sprains and joint muscle pain. Hence one can understand the importance of the career in this sector. Biomedicine- Modern scientific medicine is also referred to as biomedical. It explains health in term of biology. If anything goes wrong let us suppose if the body is struck down by a virus, internal changes damage it, it goes in for repair by specialists. This offers a distinctive and particular way of ‘seeing’ and understanding bodies and health, a set of guidelines about dealing with them—to look after them as systems which need proper maintenance and care. There are some courses available where the individuals are taught to analyze some behavioral changes or pattern found in some age groups. Like for example people with Dyslexia often don’t recognize and differentiate between the letters. Students suffering from Dyslexia don’t have lower intelligence but they just need extra support from their teachers and effective individualized teaching. Because of difficulties in reading and interpreting meaning they often drop out of schools. Proper use of technology and strategies can make a huge difference for such students. So, those opting for such course must ensure how to deal with people suffering from it. Like if they present them with friendly fonts and text to-speech method and giving the student much information to connect the audio to its written form. While listening to an audio and seeing the text simultaneously, can actually help them to bridge the gap between understanding words and assigning meaning. There are numerous other courses which offer students to be in the medical industry without a medical or M.B.B.S degree. Many of such interesting career options are psychologist, respiratory therapist, genetic counselor, medical instrument technologists, laboratory technicians, orthotics and prosthetics professionals, speech pathologist, occupational therapist, radiation therapist, registered nurse, and biomedical engineer many others. The current scenario suggests that these are the few of the most prospering career options in the medical sectors and some of which offers very-high paid jobs. T R Education. Innovation.
