UX Design Analysis
for the Yelp Android App new
user onboarding - open loop

Analysis conducted by The Chapa Twins
Are the buttons placed here for ease of use? (Thumbs?) Then are the
icons in slide 4 for the menu arranged accordingly?
Get started is not clear where it sends the user, I thought I’d go straight to
slide 4, but instead was forced into a login choice.
Why not begin with a deep link (urx.com) whereby someone
can enter the site from mobile web, into the heart of the app?
(Clicked “Get Started”)
This choice is misleading, as I thought, “Get Started” meant I could begin
my search. Facebook loads easily but asks for a large number of
permissions (Social Contacts, Location, etc)
What percentage of users choose either login avenue, skip, or dropoff?
Skip is not easily apparent, I understand why you would want to have a
person login, but is it worth the dropoff?
Also, can you send a push notification without a login? I believe so, when
someone downloads the app under the permissions.
(Clicked “Skip”)
Why did this come up after I wanted to skip any login, or affiliate behaviors, I
just want to get to a restaurant search.
This is the 4th click after “Get Started”
Certainly, the reviews are important, how are people responding to this call
to action?
Wouldn’t “Add Review” be apparent if I were already at my restaurant page?
(Clicked “Okay, got it!”)
Why is the order placed in this way? Guiding users towards certain paths, or
shifting based on how users have interacted before?
If it is about thumb usage (like the first page?) then wouldn’t you place:
Nearby, Friends, Deals on the bottom row?
How often are users clicking “Mad Check-Ins”
and subsequently checking in? Is this too many options?
Do all of these options work? In the reviews “Bookmarks”
is highlighted multiple times as not working

Comparatively I believe this is the strongest page so far, especially as it
pertains to its function. The options are clear and concise, with creative
calls to action (Is it lunch time, already? - is that dynamic?)
I notice in the app overall a difference in tone, as more informal with noncorporate directions. I believe this is positive and builds the sense of more
conversation and suggestion.
I don’t know how the thumbnail photos are chosen but that is a good teaser
to begin the process of scrolling
How are these venues rank-ordered?? It is not by distance, is it a mix of
distance, stars, and price? How are they weighted?
I do not know why this is hidden, under a subcategory, and then unclearly
marked as “Filter” in a location that is not intuitive or clear
If it is determined a person is on foot (accelerometer, speed, check in)
why does this not pop up sooner?
If you could add in the (Restaurant, Bar, Coffee/Tea) filter I believe this would
be the most useful page
Also, I would allow searches based on any amount of variables, zero, 2, or
all fields completed
