This document discusses how a media product represents social groups. It summarizes that the opening sequence shows the abuse between an adult and 16-year-old child named McKenzie. 1. How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
In our opening sequence the audience is shown the abuse take place between an adult
and child. Although we see the face and body of the child, the face of the adult is not
revealed fully. Our child is McKenzie, aged 16 and he represents a young, vulnerable
person who is the victim of domestic abuse, which is the opposite of what most 16
year olds would represent. He has had a tough upbringing, living in an abusive
household, and we tried to emulate this social group by including brutal scenes in the
first few minutes if the film.

2. • At the beginning of the opening sequence we added in some still
shots of things around the house, including alcohol bottles and
cocaine. We used this to show the harsh reality McKenzie faces on a
daily basis, and to add realism to the film. It shows the poor
conditions he lives in and what substances his attacker is under the
influence of when attacking him.

3. • For the music we used a rather sad and mellow sound as this
represented the tragic situation that is occurring and thought that any
other sound would be too upbeat. We also chose to use quite dark
lighting as this is reflective of the mood and fits with the dark theme
of the film. It was also crucial the actors wore plain clothing at the
family is poor as people watching would not be able to relate the the
protagonist if he was wearing fancy and unrealistic clothing. It also fits
into the stereotype of the social group.

4. • We decided not to reveal the face of the father as his anonymity gives him great
power over McKenzie. This power he gives off is one of the traits associated with
his role as he is the one doing the abuse. The audience doesn’t know who he is
which makes it worse when they find out that he is the father.
