Technology has changed the face of libraries and is continuing to change how we work and how we deliver services to customers. This workshop introduces emerging technology trends and shows how those trends are reshaping library services. Examples are provided of how to incorporate these evolving trends into libraries. Attendees learn what trends to look for, find out the difference between a technology trend and a fad, and get ideas on how their library can respond to technology as it emerges.

Emerging technology trends for libraries for 2017

A modern library is all about making and maintaining connections. Connections to library customers, connections to community partners, and even helping some customers connect to the library and the web for the first time. All are important in today’s library. King shares examples of how libraries can use data to better connect with customers, innovative ways to create new community partnerships, and how some libraries and other organizations are using technology tools to help all customers connect to the library and to the world.

Connecting Innovatively with your Community

Customer experience is a strange brew of structure, community, and customers. Today’s savvy librarians need to focus on creating digital and physical experiences for customers so that they can quickly find information, make decisions, or participate. Librarians need to create experiences that visitors not only remember, but share with their friends. David Lee King breaks down the customer experience in a way that will help you remain an indispensable focal point of your community. People don’t want just goods or services from a business anymore – they want unique, engaging experiences built around those goods and services. It’s the same for your library. Our patrons are looking for more than a book – they can find that at Walmart and via their favorite mobile device. They want a unique, engaging experience built around “your stuff.”

Your Journey Towards Industry 4.0 with Internet of Things

OSGi Community Event 2018 Presentation by Tim Ward (Paremus) Abstract: The model of centralized cloud compute is changing. As large-scale IoT deployments have started to become real organizations are realizing that a single central cloud can’t cope with the data security, data volumes, latency or robustness that they need for their businesses. Centralizing in a single cloud also offers a huge operational risk – if the cloud fails, their business must continue! This talk will introduce BRAIN-IoT, an EU Horizon 2020 funded project. BRAIN-IoT uses the latest OSGi R7 specifications to create an adaptive modular “Fog” environment with decentralized data processing and decision making. We’ll review the current design decisions made by the BRAIN-IoT team, including the issues concerning generic Edge Device discovery & integration, and see how they can be applied across different IoT use cases, including Smart Utilities and Industry 4.0 Factories of the Future.

Our current electricity system is in trouble. Under investment in research and development has left us with grid infrastructures which are crumbling. To fix this we need to start rolling out smart meters, smart grids, super grids and market based demand response - this will more closely align the electricity demand curve, with the supply curve (which is now becoming less controllable with the advent of renewables). Automated demand response programs are our best hope for successful DR programs. That and intelligent appliances which can adjust their behaviour based on information feeds from utilities about the state of the current (no pun) market.

Everyone is touting it's energy efficiency and Green-ness - but just how Green is Cloud Computing actually? Cloud providers are not publishing their energy consumption data (Watts/Compute Cycle) so it is impossible to say whether cloud computing is energy efficient, or not. Green is a whole other issue - until cloud providers are powering their DC's with renewable resources, they will not be Green.
