- High dignity and prestige
- Need to be able to speak English
- Have (a little) English already
- Fossilization (?)

Consequences
 Can’t be taught to speak like teenagers and adults
 Should be speaking-trained as professionals
 Customized speaking materials/programs
 Dignity, image, and prestige considered
 Speaking learning reckoned light but taken to a height
 Intelligibility/fluency precedes accuracy (See Alwasilah
2001: 46 and Antoni 2003: 3)
 Affect excels cognition
 Putting yourself in the student’s shoe

 Questions asked to maintain interaction
 Errors and mistakes jotted down and dealt with tactfully
